AQUAMAN Director James Wan Says He Doesn't See Any 'Shake-Ups' With Warner Bros.' DCEU

With several negative rumours surrounding the DCEU's creative direction, Aquaman director James Wan has weighed in on the supposed "shake-ups" going on behind-the-scenes...

After the poor critical reception to Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, rumours have been rampant about the supposed behind-the-scenes shakeups at Warner Bros. in order to re-jig their plans for the DC Extended Universe; the most key of these was DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns being given the responsibility of guiding the future of the movies going forward. Despite all the swirling talk, Aquaman director James Wan has insisted that these "shake-ups" are being blown out of proportion. "To be honest, it’s not as dramatic as the press is making it out to be – from what I’m seeing. And right now I’m seeing everything as more an outsider looking into this box. So from that perspective, it’s really cool that it’s not crazy, crazy dramatic. I think it’s great. Geoff Johns is super talented, super smart. Part of what got me excited about the Aquaman character is his re-envisioning of Aquaman, the character, with The New 52. And that’s super exciting. And I’m working very closely with him, and I want to work with him very closely to shape the story that I want to tell."

Wan admitted that his filming schedule keeps him busy (the director is currently doing the rounds for The Conjuring 2), but he maintains he hasn't seen much change in terms of what goes on with the DC film division. Whatever these “shake-ups” are, I don’t actually see them. If anything, like anything to do with my fricking career, I read about them in the trades, I read them all over the internet! And people are asking me this and I’m like, ‘Huh? What?’ [laughs] Just like I found out all these things. And so I’m not privy to necessarily what’s going – partially because I was so busy with trying to finish up Conjuring 2.

With Suicide Squad scheduled for release in August and Justice League currently in production, it's still full steam ahead for the DCEU, though it's probably safe to say there is a sense of caution with WB going forward. What do you think of Wan's comments? Sound off below!

@HappyHater - I don't think we are smart enough to tell the difference, and that is what Internet media outlets like Deadline Hollywood, Ain't it Cool News, and Birth-Movies-Death are hedging on to get you to click to their websites. More credible sites like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are following suit just so that they don't loose their site hits. If the Studio decided to shake up their organizational structure on a failed movie, they would have done so back when they released Catwoman.

The truth of the matter is that the real shakeup occurred just before "Man of Steel" when they got rid of Alan Horn, Jeff Robinov, and Christopher Nolan. They wanted to make more films based on DC properties, but these guys were in the way. If they were still in charge, we would still be making solo Batman films, a Superman picture every 7-15 years, and no Wonder Woman film whatsoever. Now that we got success from "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", the door is open to make the lineup of films that they have planed out to the year 2020 (now 12 in total - 4 or 5 more than what Marvel has planned). That line up is so large that they actually do need a new film division to help produce them. They are not necessarily copying Marvel outside of doing what should come naturally with any business expansion. The increase in scope (i.e. the number of films now scheduled) is a lot for one person to manage, so a guy like Charles Roven, who was working the day-to-day production is getting a break when they moved him to an executive producer role. Now he (along with Ben Affleck) can manage other producers who can handle the day-to-day responsibilities of productions. This is just progress as a result of growth and success... not failure.

You just said you don't actually see what's happening, so how do you know it's being blown out of proportion if your knowledge of it all is the same as that of the public??

I believe Wan, I really don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the media and anti-BVS fanboys want you to be believe. The DCEU def. needs a course correction but people like to make things seem like more than they actually are. Nature of the beast.

@MattBellissimo - I agree with that completely. It's a lot of musical chairs. And that's what worries me, personally.

Remember, when someone who hated Dawn of Justice says that WB is turning itself upside down to fix it, it's often as much a hope as an observation.

@MattBellissimo - You mean the people in the business are actually too busy making the movies instead of trolling the internet like their "fans" do?
