THE BABADOOK Director Jennifer Kent Among The Contenders To Direct CAPTAIN MARVEL

Mentioned in The Hollywood Reporter's piece on Brie Larson being the frontrunner to play Captain Marvel (you can read more about that by clicking here) are two of the female directors currently being eyed to take the helm of the Phase 3 movie. We've heard a lot of rumours about who will take charge of this one, including a rather silly claim that the star and director would have the same first name.

The trade however reveals that, "names like Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland, USA) and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) surfacing as contenders, according to sources." It definitely appears as if Marvel is thinking out of the box for Captain Marvel then, and sticking to their guns when it comes to hiring a female director to helm their first female led superhero blockbuster. All I want is a director who is passionate about the character. That's why the Russos and Gunn work so well for Cap and the Guardians, respectively.

A good director can direct a decent superhero film, but a director who cares about the material - like Coogler seems to - will direct a great superhero film.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Wiser words have never been said. In this website. Probably.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Passionate and a strong opinion they're willing to stand up for. The Russos have pushed for questionable things they really wanted and Gunn has his movies in his head shot for shot, and we're reaping the benefits.

As long as the female director they pick doesn't come in feeling like they can be an asshole because of the PR nightmare Marvel would have if they fired her, I'm sure they'll find a good one.

True enough.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Except for Zack Snyder. Although, I think that's more on David "Martian Manhunter sucks, and Superman should renounce his American citizenship" Goyer than on Zack Snyder's eagerness to adapt all his favorite comic stories into one movie.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - Peyton Reed loved his character Ant-man so much that they said he got jealous of him being used in the "Civil War" movie!

...he really cares for the character like it was his child going off to school for the first time!!!

Haven't seen the Babadook, but I've heard nothing but good things. I've heard the tone and atmosphere she created were fantastic, so if she brings that skill to the table, I'm down.

The Babadook was a decent and refreshing take on the horror genre. It'll be pretty interesting to see what she can do with a big film like this if she gets it.

I honestly think that the best original horror movie in the last few years is IT FOLLOWS. That movie was incredible, and it got to the point where even Quentin Tarantino wrote up some notes for the director on what he loved and what he would've done for the movie.
