While we know that Chad L. Coleman is playing the new villain Tobias Church in Arrow's upcoming fifth season, we still don't know very much about the character's history. In an interview with TVGuide, showrunner Wendy Mericle has provided some intriguig details on Church, saying that he is "somebody Oliver unwittingly created in Season 1 when he was a killer in a hood. This guy is going to be collateral damage who lost someone to the Hood and [has] spent the last several years training and plotting for revenge. He will be a true dark mirror to Oliver Queen." Given that Oliver spent most of season 1 taking out criminals and mobsters, it makes sense that his past might come back to haunt him.

When asked about the much-derided decision to kill off Black Canary in the fourth season, Mericle said the decision will play into the events of the fifth season."I can't say too much about that. I can say with confidence that, in Season 5, our decision will make more sense... even to the fans who were really vehemently opposed to it." Along with the ripple effects surrounding Laurel's death, viewers will also learn just what Laurel said to Oliver on her deathbed in the season's premiere episode.

Mericle also confirmed that we will be seeing Mr. Terrific (not just his civilian identity) this season, complete with a full origin story. "We will be doing a real origin story for Mr. Terrific in Season 5," she revealed. "When we come back in Season 5, [Star City] is overrun with crime." In addition to some new allies, Team Arrow (or what's left of it, anyway) will also be receiving a new base of operations that will have multiple levels.

Arrow returns Wednesday, October 5, 2016. Are you exicted for the new season? Sound off below!

Maybe this will redeem Arrow from the abysmal last season. I still have hope as this was one of my favorite shows

@InfinitePunches - With help from Felicity of course.

Pretty cool that they're making him a product of his vengeful past!

I guess I always hoped that the final season didn't have Tommy take on the mantle of The Dark Archer... Malcolm using the Lazarus Pit to revive Tommy being his driving force to become Ra's would have been cool!

So...you're asking me to rewatch Season 1 to better understand our Season 5 villian....but if I do, and I'm reminded how good the show was in Seasons 1 and 2....then I'll get pissed thinking about Seasons 3 and 4 and how bad they were...

And I'll stop watching it and give up on it. That's a dangerous game they're playing.

@LordHarryLatts - oh yeah...and f*ck Wendy Mericle...she's the only person who's unaware she destroyed a good show.

I don't know if I can get back on board with this show after how far they went off the rails toward the end of season 4.

Like that finale was honestly one of the worst episodes of television I have ever experienced...

I'll give it a shot though, maybe they'll get their shit together this year.

Arrow should take a season off. disperse their characters throughout the other CW properties (Flash, LoT and Supergirl) and then come back with a solid break neck storyline next year. Arrow's problem is the looming problem for all CBTV shows, after 2-3 season people start getting sick of the redundancy by which things are wrapped up each week. Arrow = oh great another archer, but he'll save the day at the end, Flash = oh great another speedster, but he'll save the day at the end, AoS = oh great another crisis with a bunch of ancillary characters Marvel doesnt give a shit about, but they'll pull through at the end, etc. recirculation is a must!

I really don't get why the insist on doing a new villain. They basically got to do that last season with Damien Darhk. He was a very small minor character in the comics who appeared in like 7 issues of Dc comics total. Damien was there chance to make a new villain and attach an obscure name to it. Now we are getting a new villain that just sounds awful: A crime boss who has a vendetta against arrow after he killed a one of his loved ones in year 1. That sounds so bad. That was basically slade's motivation in season 2.

@RiddlrBot - i think it would've been nice to have malcom be the main villain (i haven't watched season 5 much so idk if he's even alive).

but i feel like nothing would bring the show back to its roots more than a revived struggle against the original antagonist.

but i don't write for the cw..

Also outsiders war could be soooooooo good. Seeing that on screen would be a dream. I don't know why they refuse to adapt it. Mark Guggenheim just thinks he's a genius and that people will kneel before him once he makes another villain who nobody cares about. That's the problem with this show, they have managed to take everything good from seasons 1 and 2 and make us no longer care about it. Shitty villains with shitty plans, side characters who literally are like watching cardboard, and more nonsense olicity storylines. How this can be fixed: Kill Felicity in the opening of season 5, reintroduce Komodo who completely destroys everything oliver has, and then go full on outsiders war. We need to get out of Star City, we need to stop with the melodrama nonsense, and actually do something more interesting with the villain other than wanting to destroy star city or destroy oliver by destroying the city first. Go home Guggenheim.
