BOX OFFICE: DEADPOOL Obliterates Competition With $135M Opening ($260M WW); On Pace For $150M+ Holiday

Deadpool has exceeded all expectations and now holds the records for biggest February opening, biggest R-Rated opening, and is also the seventh biggest superhero movie opening ever!

Remember those conservative $55-65 million opening weekend estimates? Well, a week ago, those numbers would've been more than satisfactory for the low-budgeted Deadpool, but in typical Deadpool fashion, the Merc decided that number just wasn't enough.

Over the three-day Valentine's Day weekend, the Tim Miller-directed superhero feature has grossed a record-shattering $135 million and is currently on-pace for an absolutely colossal $150 million over the four-day Presidents Day weekend. With those numbers, Deadpool now holds the record for biggest February opening ever, destroying the record set by Fifty Shades Of Grey last year, and also holds the record for biggest opening for an R-Rated film ever, overtaking the record set by The Matrix Reloaded in 2003.

Overseas,  Deadpool has grossed over $125 million, which brings its worldwide total to over $260 million, which is more than four times its budget of $58 million.

Deadpool's magnum-sized debut is now the seventh largest opening for a superhero movie in history (tenth if you adjust for inflation), surpassing the likes of Spider-Man ($114.8M), Iron Man 2 ($128.1M), Guardians Of The Galaxy ($94.3M), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95.0M), Man Of Steel ($116.6M), and every single X-Men film (X-Men 3 - $102.8M; DOFP - $90.8M) ever. This is a well-earned victory for 20th Century Fox, the film's cast and crew, writers, and especially for the film's star - Ryan Reynolds, who after nearly a decade was finally able to see his dream realized on the big screen and in glorious fashion, no less.

Also, in case you were wondering, Deadpool is Reynolds' biggest opener ever and will become his highest grossing film ever by the end of the week, if not sooner. Additionally, with the international numbers now in, the film has already out-grossed the entire box office runs of Reynolds' other comic book adaptations - Green Lantern and R.I.P.D. On a different note, Deadpool has also already out-performed the disastrous run of Josh Trank's ill-fated Fantastic Four.

As for the other new releases, How To Be Single and Zoolander 2, they finished a distant third ($18.75M) and fourth ($15.65M), respectively. Kung Fu Panda 3, in its third weekend, finished second with approximately $19.7 million for the three-day weekend, and an estimated $26 million for four days, bringing its worldwide sum to over $225 million.

So, what do you guys think? Will X-Men: ApocalypseBatman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice or Captain America: Civil War debut better? What about Suicide Squad or Doctor Strange? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Here's Reynolds' response:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Give the RIGHTS BACK TO DISNEY!!!!!!!
JonC
JonC - 2/14/2016, 11:22 AM
@Electron - Does Disney even show on the screen before a Marvel movie is played? Why do people associate these movies needing to go to Disney? Yeah, I understand Disney now owns Marvel but technically the rights need to revert to Marvel and not Disney.

@JonC - And for those concerned that no R rated content can come from a studio owned by Disney then they must have never heard of Touchstone which is owned by Disney.

@JonC - I never understood why people make that statement either, if they really had a clue what Disney owned they would probably shut up sense Disney owns Damn near everthing. Also only a small percentage is actually for kids.

Well deserved. The movie was amazing. It was funny, action packed and full of heart. It made me a Deadpool fan. Glad that Fox let Miller and Reynolds do what they want.

Now, they should take a lesson and let Miller handle the X-Men. This movie depicted the X-Men as they should be and it wasn't even an X-Men movie.

That's impressive, really. For sure there will be discutions among FOX, at least. A Wolverine R rated may be in the realm of possible now *fingers crossed*
