Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, Scottish Gaelic: Là Fhèill Pàdraig) is a yearly holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is named after Saint Patrick (circa AD 387–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Christian holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture.

It is a public holiday on the island of Ireland; including Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, as well as in Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and Montserrat, among others.

Little is known of Patrick's early life, though we know he was born in Roman Britain in the fifth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon in the Church, like his father before him. At the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken captive to Ireland as a slave.[1] It is believed he was held somewhere on the west coast of Ireland, possibly Mayo, but the exact location is unknown. According to his Confession, he was told by God in a dream to flee from captivity to the coast, where he would board a ship and return to Britain. Upon returning, he quickly joined the Church in Auxerre in Gaul and studied to be a priest.

In 432, he again says that he was called back to Ireland, though as a bishop, to save the Irish, and indeed he was successful at this, focusing on converting royalty and aristocracy as well as the poor. Irish folklore tells that one of his teaching methods included using the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. After nearly thirty years of teaching and spreading "God's word" he died on 17 March, 461 AD, and was buried at Downpatrick, so tradition says. Although there were other more successful missions to Ireland from Rome, Patrick endured as the principal champion of Irish Christianity and is held in esteem in the Irish Church.

Many thanks to Wikipedia for the information, link below.

Now onto the castings:

Bridget Moynahan as Shamrock:

Molly Fitzgerald was born in Dunshaughlin, Ireland, and was the daughter of a militant member of the IRA. As Shamrock, she serves as a vessel for displaced poltergeists and souls that have died as innocent victims of war; these spirits manifest themselves for fractions of seconds to cause good luck for her and bad luck for those who oppose her.

She was teleported away by the Grandmaster, along with hundreds of other heroes of Earth, so that the Grandmaster and Death could choose champions from among them. Shamrock was chosen for Death's team, fighting alongside fellow heroes Le Peregrine, Iron Man, Vanguard, Iron Fist, Storm, Arabian Knight, Sabra, Invisible Woman, Angel, Black Panther, Sunfire, and the Collective Man. When the Grandmaster's team won the contest, the heroes were returned to Earth.
Later, her father drugged her to allow Arnim Zola to attempt to duplicate her powers. She later retired from superhero activity and became a hairdresser.
Powers and abilities

Shamrock is possessed by the souls of thousands of victims of wars who manifest themselves as poltergeists which affect probability within a 20-foot radius of her, altering situations so that she is given an advantage. In essence having "The Luck of the Irish".

Although Bridget is not actually Irish, she has Irish in her bloodline and i like this actress, i remember her in "Prey" and also shes been recently in the show called "Six Degrees" and has done many movies. I have no doubt that she'd do a good Irish accent and will play the Shamrock part really well.

Cillian Murphy as Judge Joyce:

Judge-Sergeant Joyce is an Irish Judge. He partnered with Dredd when Dredd was sent to Ireland to extradite a suspect in 2113. In the following year he was supposed to accompany Dredd on a suicide mission to kill the necromagus Sabbat, but was knocked unconscious and replaced by Johnny Alpha, which saved his life. He was seriously injured during a hazardous extradition assignment to Mega-City One.

Yeah Cillian is a fantastic Irish actor and don't worry Judge Joyce is not in the DC Universe, its in the 2000AD one. I have no problem whatsoever of Cillian owning this character and making it his own, one of the great actors of today.

Colin Ferrell as Cassidy:

Cassidy, whose full name is Proinsias Cassidy, is an Irish vampire. Cassidy joins the Irish Volunteers and takes part in the Easter Rising in 1916, though his brother William (Billy) also joins to keep watch over him. Billy eventually forces Cassidy to desert the army because of its impending failure, and Cassidy is soon bitten by a "hag", who seemingly leaves fatal injuries. His body falls into the water, and he soon learns that he is not succumbing to the injuries and that the sun burns his skin. He decides to travel to America, so his family and other soldiers will believe that he is dead. He lives in America, picks up alcohol and drug problems, going as far as prostituting himself for drugs, and begins to wear sunglasses to hide his natural identity. This eventually escalates into the need to hide his eyes, which betray 70 years of substance abuse.

He eventually meets Tulip O'Hare and Jesse Custer. Cassidy forms a strong friendship with Jesse, and eventually falls in love with Tulip, though she does not reciprocate the feelings. He constantly struggles with his addictions and his feelings for Tulip, though after believing Jesse to be dead, both he and Tulip take up heavy drugs and alcohol, and start a sexual relationship.

Come on, this part was made for Irish man Colin Farrell to sink his teeth into! (Whoops). He would be such a bad ass playing the Cassidy role you'd think it was made for him. Farrell would be awesome in my book as Cassidy and damn hopefully one day soon we actually see this "Preacher" movie or TV show, its been forever already!

Damian Lewis as Banshee:

Banshee (Sean Cassidy) is a Marvel Comics superhero, a member of the X-Men.
An Irish mutant, Banshee possesses a "sonic scream," capable of harming enemies’ auditory systems and causing physical vibrations. He is named after the banshee, a legendary ghost from Irish mythology, said to possess a powerful cry, although the banshee spirit is invariably female.

A former Interpol agent and NYPD officer, Banshee was always a decade older than most of the X-Men and had only a relatively short tenure as a full-time X-Man. He was, however, a mentor of the junior team Generation X.

Sean Cassidy is the heir to both a small fortune and a castle in Cassidy Keep, Ireland, where he was born. In his youth, he marries Maeve Rourke and takes a job with Interpol as an Inspector. While Cassidy is away on a long mission, his wife discovers she is pregnant and gives birth to their daughter, Theresa Cassidy. Not much later, Maeve dies in an IRA bombing. With no means to contact Sean, his cousin Tom takes care of Theresa. When Sean returns to learn of his wife’s death, he is devastated. Before Tom can even tell him of the existence of his daughter, Sean lashes out at Tom with his sonic scream for not having taken better care of Maeve. While Sean flies away in anger, Tom falls into a chasm, breaking his leg as a result of the attack, which leaves him with a limp. Angrily, Tom swears to make Sean pay and vows to never tell him about his daughter, raising her himself instead.

Not exactly Irish as Lewis is English born but he would easily do a great job with the accent for Banshee. This guy can act, just check out his hit new TV show called "Life" great show, plus he's done many movies etc too. You can believe Lewis as Banshee like a sonic scream bursting your ear drums!

Gabriel Byrne as Jack O Lantern (Daniel Cormack):

The first Jack O'Lantern is Daniel Cormack of Ireland, who was born to a poor farmer who was granted a magic lantern by an Irish fairy. Cormack is a member of the Global Guardians, the international group of superheroes.[1] His first recorded mission in Super Friends #8 is to help Green Lantern dismantle a bomb in Ireland. He appears in three solo back up stories in Super Friends #s 37, 40 and 44.

Cormack's first appearance in the mainstream DC Comics universe is DC Comics Presents #46, helping Superman find an ancient ruin in Ireland. He is later seen as part of a group of heroes from Ireland and England trying to save the world in the Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Daniel Cormack has a mystical lantern that gives them the power of flight, flame projection, teleportation, illusion casting, enhanced strength, and the ability to create fogs. The power of the lantern is at its weakest at noon, and gradually increases to its peak at midnight.

Marvin Noronsa and Liam McHugh come later to pick up the Jack O Lantern mantle.

Byrne maybe a tad too old for this part but then again maybe not, we need a seasoned actor with the quality skills that Byrne has in spades to make this DC Supervillain believable, and yes he would so own this part, quality Irish actor all over.

Isla Fisher as Siryn:

Siryn (Theresa Rourke Cassidy) like her father, the X-Men’s Banshee, Siryn is an Irish mutant, who possesses a "sonic scream" capable of incapacitating and injuring an opponent's hearing and sending powerful vibrations through the air. She can use these vibrations to fly. Her name refers to the Sirens of Greek mythology.

Siryn was raised by Banshee’s cousin and arch-nemesis Black Tom Cassidy without Banshee's knowledge. By her early teens, she left Black Tom and joined the X-Men offshoots X-Force and X-Factor.

Fisher good actress, and i believe she has what it takes to play this character, oh yes. Yeah she as far as i know has no connection to Ireland but she screams Siryn and the girl as done more than just comedies, shes done soaps, drama, and other type movies. This girl is Siryn.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers as The Gay Ghost:

The Gay Ghost, created in 1942 by Gardener Fox and Howard Purcell. Gay Ghost seems to be a Spectre type superhero, with a hilariously convoluted origin story involving true love, highwaymen, immigration, Nazis and things. He was later renamed the 'Grim Ghost'. ghost is from Connaught Castle in Ulster.

Okay, now off the gay jokes already, gay wasn't gay back then, well it was but you know what i mean lol. Anyways this actor that i keep seeing put up for Namor all the time (and i don't have a clue why?), is perfect for Gay Ghost, draw you own conclusions, oh yeah he is Irish born too.

Katie McGrath as Silver Banshee:

Siobhan McDougal was the first-born child of Garrett McDougal, the patriarch of an old Gaelic clan that has occupied an island midway between Scotland and Ireland for a thousand generations. On that island is Castle Broen, where first-born McDougals undergo a ritual to prove themselves worthy to lead the clan. When Siobhan was young, she traveled the world, only returning to Castle Broen when she heard of her father's death. Her uncle Seamus determined that no woman would lead the clan and intended her brother Bevan to become the new patriarch. She went ahead with the family ritual by herself, which involved calling on supernatural forces for power. She was interrupted by Bevan, and the distraction proved disastrous as she was dragged away into an infernal netherworld. An entity called "the Crone" granted her powers and the ability to return to Earth as the Silver Banshee, but demanded payment in the form of an occult book that belonged to her father. She found that her father's book collection had been shipped off for sale in the United States. Her quest brought her to Metropolis. Killing anyone that stood in the way of her search attracted the attention of Superman. Unable to defeat Superman, she chose to retreat and continue her mission at a later date.

Katie born in Dublin Ireland and is best know as Morgana in the TV show "Merlin" also shes been in "Tudors" and other stuff too. Quite a talented actress and she would do justice to this Silver Banshee role, more so probably than the "Smallville" version will.

Michael Fassbender as Hitman:

TextHitman chronicles the exploits of Tommy Monaghan, an ex-Marine Gulf War veteran turned contract killer from the Cauldron, a lower-class Irish district of Gotham City. He first appears in The Demon Annual #2 (part of the "Bloodlines" crossover in the summer of 1993), when he is attacked and bitten by a Bloodlines parasite called Glonth. Instead of dying, the bite unexpectedly triggers his metagene and grants him x-ray vision and moderate telepathy. A side effect is that his corneas and irises are solid black, indistinguishable from his pupils; the sight managed to unnerve Batman when he first saw them. The inherited powers later come with limits, however, and Monaghan utilizes them selectively, both because of the difficulty of concentrating during an explosive firefight and the side effects of their extended use (which includes anything between a headache and a minor illness).

Fassbender was born in Heidelberg, Germany but Michael was raised in the town of Killarney, Co. Kerry, in south west Ireland. So thats Irish enough for me. Amazing actor and Hitman (Tommy Monaghan) hits you in the face for him. He would be awesome in this DC role and would bring grit and a lot of depth to the comic book character that would be needed. Check out many of his movies or stuff he's been on TV like "Hex" and see why!

Sam Rockwell as Black Tom Cassidy:

"Black Tom" Cassidy (Thomas Samuel Eamon Cassidy) is a Marvel Comics supervillain, an enemy of the X-Men, and archenemy of Banshee. Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Dave Cockrum, he first fully appeared in Uncanny X-Men #101 (October 1976). In addition to fighting the X-Men, he has clashed with Deadpool a number of times.

Black Tom is a mutant who can manipulate, bond with and project energy through plant life. He was the black sheep of a prominent Irish family.[1] The X-Man Banshee is his cousin. Tom secretly raised Banshee’s daughter Siryn, of whose existence Banshee was unaware, and conscripted her into his criminal gang. Black Tom was also a longtime partner of the super-strong villain Juggernaut, until Juggernaut's recent reformation.

Black Tom was born in Dublin. He is the cousin of Sean Cassidy, the Banshee, a member of the X-Men. He was also once the only friend of the Juggernaut.

Rockwell is a talent all by himself and would do a amazing Black Tom Cassidy.

Paul Telfer as Slaine:

Sláine is a barbarian fantasy adventure series based on Celtic myths and stories which first appeared in 1983 in 2000AD, written by Pat Mills and initially drawn by his then wife, Angela Kincaid. Most of the early stories were drawn by Mike McMahon and Massimo Belardinelli. Other notable artists to have worked on the character include Glenn Fabry and Simon Bisley. The current artist is Clint Langley, whose artwork combines painting, photography and digital art.

Sláine's favourite weapon is an axe called "Brainbiter". He has the power of the "warp spasm", based on the ríastrad or body-distorting battle frenzy of the Irish hero Cú Chulainn, in which earth power "warps" through his body, turning him into a terrifying, monstrous figure who knows neither friend nor foe. He is a devotee of the earth goddess Danu.

Telfer would have been perfect for the new "Conan" film, but they went and got Stargate boy. Well Conan's loss is Slaine's gain, he would make a fantastic Slaine and you will believe!

LEEE777 - Well hope you liked it and if you can think of anymore i'll be happy to put them up. Have fun and happy St Patrick's day guys!

Bravo Lee! I think you covered practically every Irish comic character there is..I can't think of any more anyway. No way to that lummox as Slaine though..and I hate Johhny Myers..otherwise great casting. I don't mind Lewis but I think Fassbender would suit Banshee better, he is suppose to be a charmer after all and Lewis is just a ginger gimp!

@Lee- Go raibh mile maith agat agus la feile padraig shona dhuit!!! Is maith liom na daoine seo!!!

I especially like Michael Fassbender as Tommy Monaghan. Damn, I would love to see A Hitman movie!

I just found out Fassbender went to the school of which my girlfriend's father was the principal.

Rhys Meyers though... ewww! I hate him as an actor. Both he and Cillian Murphy (Who is a really nice guy!) both come from about 2 miles of either side of where I am sitting now!

And i know she's not Irish, but Isla Fisher for every role in every movie ever!!! She is a hottie!!!

Great Cassidy pick man!

But I don't really like your Banshee, and Black Tom picks.

For Banshee the best choice IMO is Sean Patrick Flannery. He is a little young, but that gives himpotential for sequels.

Black Tom HAS to be Tim Curry!

Other than that, good job man!

Say, Leee@, if ya think about it CONAN was
an Irishman, he was an ancient Irishman or Kelt!

Back then they were known as Cimmerians!
Robert E. Howard was proud of his Irish-Pictish/Keltic
heritage and that's why he wrote CONAN as an Irishman
of Olde.

So there's another Irish character who was in the
comics and still is at DARK HORSE!

Also Bran Mak Morn was another Howard character
and he definitely was Irish/Pict, an Irish/Pict King,
to be exact! And he was also in another comic from
MARVEL, "Savage Tales", which Conan was too.

LEE7 this is radically cool bro!
Telfer as Slain damn bloody fantastic casting!
DDD
DDD - 3/17/2010, 6:24 PM
Whoops! Leee@ I was mistaken about Bran Mak Morn.
He was the last King of the PICTS which lived in
very ancient Scotland. A mixture of Picts and
Celts make up the Scottish peoples.

There is some evidence they were of Native American
derivation! They came across the land bridge which
used to exist between the Americas and Europe at the
end of the Ice Age, about 10-12000 years ago! The
word PICT is from the Latin related to the word
"PICTURE". The Romans called them this because they
tattooed themselves with blue and black ink. Just
like Mel Gibson did in Braveheart!

Scotts were called PICTS by the Roman invaders and
the Romans stayed away from them cuz they were so
ferocious and savage! Conan fought against Picts
every now and again!

If ya remember in the Conan movie, the bodybuilder
FRANCO COLUMBU, a friend of Arnold's, played a Pict
slave-warrior, he jumped up on a rock and glared at
Conan, he was all tattooed up!

It was another HOWARD hero I was thinking of,
CORMAC MAC ART, He was an Irish King. Bran Mak
Morn was a Pictish/Scottish King.
