Douglas Trumbull gave a presentation in Toronto screening a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he showed off a number of never-before-seen images from the production that will make their way into Trumbull and Larson's behind-the-scenes photo book. The seventeen minutes of the film cut by Kubrick were found in good condition in a hangar in Kansas.

Warner Brothers pulled the plug on their documentary, 2001: Behind the Infinite—The Making of a Masterpiece.

Trumbull also said that he has no idea what Warner Bros. plans to do with the extra footage, but the cut scenes are Perfectly Preserved in CMY component negative.




LEEE777 - Well personally I'm thinking Warner Bros. cancelled the documentary for the sole reason of thinking theres big money in this if they release 2001: A Space Odyssey with the extra 17 minutes in it, but thats just me guessing, what do you all think?

No, Machine Man was an invention of Jack Kirby for the comic. Always thought that was bizarre.

=guh= I can't stay awake through the version on dvd now, I don't think an extra 17 minutes is going to help any.

Tis a masterpiece. I've seen it more times than is sensible, and its one film that a re release with extra footage wouldn't actually bother me.

sci-fi classic,i've got it on blu-ray & for such an old film the transfer to blu-ray looks amazing.

Overall it's a great movie, but I get the feeling that Kubrik tried to hard to make it too cerebral. Hopefully the extra footage has nothing to do with the apes. That part was way too long. The sequel, 2010, was more of a standard sci-fi space movie and was pretty good.

LEEE777 - This was actually located in the Warner Bros. archives that are in an underground salt mine in Hutchinson Kansas. Sadly, if you ever hear on the news of a salt mine collapsing, as a film fan you should experience roughly the same feeling as Obi-Wan Kenobi when Alderaan explodes, at that very moment every single master print of every key movie in history will have been destroyed... They have tours to go underground and view certain components from over a hundred years of companies storing their important files/ records down there, but the part of the complex that is hidden from the general public roughly amounts to an underground Area 51

I just watched this movie again a few months ago and it really has stood the test of time. It is such a lyrical film. Perfect in every way. Kubrick was a master. Except for Eyes Wide Shut. That one sucked.
