Jensen Ackles: The living embodiment of Captain America!

What makes him a valid contender to begin with? Why is he the fans’ top choice? Would this be the most logical choice for Marvel’s star spangled avenger? Learn all about it here!

MultiPurposePoni brought us the news that Jensen Ackles has not only read for the part of Steve Rogers but is considered part of the top choices to wield the shield! The debate between fans of the hero has been raging since day one and will never come to an end. Although Jensen doesn’t tickle every fan’s fancy, a record breaking CBM poll hosted by Brent Sprecher has declared Jensen Ackles as being the fans’ top choice! But why are most fans so eager to see Dean Winchester lace up the buccaneer boots?

The character of Steve Rogers is very particular and holds many requirements that SHOULD be demanded of its hopefuls. The fans normally jump to the physical requirements since it is a character based from a comic book. The “image” of the character must appear as intact as possible on screen with logical reason. The fans of the character must be able to distinguish its essence amongst the array of liberties that will surely be taken. The so called “essence” of the character consists of the character’s looks as much as its personality. It is after all the difference between Ironman’s success and Catwoman’s demise. The story does play a great part in the film’s success but if the character isn’t accurately portrayed, the fan base will simply walk away. And they consist of way bigger numbers than the studios give credit for.

Steve Rogers is a blond haired, blue eyed, 6’2 American born Caucasian male in his late twenties. He’s a bit frail at first but after taking the super soldier serum, he quickly becomes the pinnacle of human perfection which means his abilities become enhanced to their absolute peak and his build morphs to an athlete’s level. The actor chosen for the role must be able to lend himself naturally to those requirements if he doesn’t already fulfill them. As for the character’s hair and eyes, I wouldn’t really mind some variations per say but the less there are, the better the adaptation will be. And I believe Jessica Alba already proved that blond hair and blue eyes aren’t a naturally believable option for everyone. In regards to the character’s build, although sometimes portrayed as “bodybuilder big” in the comics, it should not be any bigger than an Olympic gymnast’s. The chosen actor must either be able to acquire that physique naturally or already have it. And since the character will be the most agile soldier ever witnessed, naturally the actor portraying the role should be well accustomed to acrobatics as well as hand to hand combat choreographies. If this is all new to him, he will look as stiff and out of place as a fat kid in a boot camp. In regards to nationality, even being a Canadian myself I have to admit that only an American born actor should have a chance at this role. It didn’t bother me that Hugh Jackman, an Australian actor, played Wolverine since the character doesn’t represent the nation like Captain America does. Captain America is the poster boy for his own nation and should be represented by an appropriately American actor. And that actor must also be Caucasian. Will Smith is a talented actor but shouldn’t be considered for the role of Captain America unless it was for the first one named Isaiah Bradley. On top of it all, any actor that cannot naturally look like he’s in his late twenties should not ever be considered.

Although most comic book fans tackle the picture before the words when contemplating a feature adaptation, we are no strangers to the acting requirement the character needs since many of our dreams have been crushed on the big screen in the past! In fact, Dogsofwar hosted a poll that asked fans what would be the most important aspect to consider in Captain America’s case and “acting” came up as #1! Fans are tired of getting below par actors for their favourite heroes. But the thing is that the director has the final say as to which performance makes the cut. It is his responsibility to make sure his actors give the best of themselves which means that even though the actor chosen might not have swayed you in his prior performances; he’s not entirely without hope because the director will be the fuel to his fire! Unless we individually hope for a completely unknown actor, we should be happy to get an actor that has previously portrayed very similar performances to what the character requires. And even though this actor will be surrounded by an “A” class cast we have to realise that no matter who they choose, the actor will be the youngest and will inevitably have the less amount of box office experience. And we shouldn’t be biased on where this actor’s performances were shown, be it the CW or live theatre, Hollywood is a whole new ball game, played on a whole new field with completely new rules and a whole new umpire calling the shots! Captain America is a pillar of patriotism and has the natural commanding presence that could make him lead an army of mortals crashing down hell’s gates. Although it is MANDITORY for the actor to exude that presence naturally without effort, the character will need to EARN his leadership amongst a hot shot billionaire and the god of thunder no less! It is in the books! Do not lie to yourselves, if you are purists, you SHOULD want the young Captain to climb his way to the top and to earn his title amongst the avengers! I guarantee you this will be Cap’s hardest challenge in the team’s first chapter!

So there you have it, these are the character’s requirements and they are undisputed. Where does Jensen Ackles stand with all this? Simple, out of all the actors ever speculated for the part, he is the only one to have every single one of these requirements AND has had the experience to prove it. Dean Winchester is quite the complex character. He has so many layers to him that it would take a whole new editorial to explain. That character has grown exponentially through five seasons and so has the actor portraying him. He’s dirty blond (light brown) haired, blue eyed and towers at 6’1. His build is decent enough not to require too much gym time prior to filming. Not only is Dean Winchester a leader but he literally fought hell’s minions personally. On Supernatural, not only has Jensen proved to have the skills to kick an ass at the drop of a dime but also to have the balls to stare death in the face without so much as a single bead of sweat in sight! When Dean Winchester looks you in the eye and tells you to do something, you do it or kiss your nuts goodbye! There is no doubt in my mind that he has the chops to pull off the scrawny kid’s passion to defend his country, the Captain’s determination in leading the troops and the Hero’s stature in representing his nation and upholding his ideals. There are many great choices to play Captain America but there is only one who is perfect; Jensen Ackles!!!

JENSEN ACKLES FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!

Interesting commments, but I'm still under the impression that they just want him because he was in that stupid soap opera TV show.
airbeyonder18 - 2/9/2010, 11:42 AM
I would Like to see him be Cap...

They should do a Poll for Cap like they did Batman on Yahoo...

The Winner of that poll ended up being Batman...
NubaX - 2/9/2010, 11:43 AM

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 11:51 AM

KiNGJohn472 - 2/9/2010, 11:51 AM
Hell yeah! Great stuff Shaman! :)

Avengers1
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 11:52 AM
Ackles makes a good HAWKEYE nothing more!!!

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 11:52 AM
@Grif he is 6'1. How the hell is that not tall enough?
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 11:52 AM
Jensen Ackles for HAWKEYE. Hes too short to play Captain America.
RIKSHAWRenegade - 2/9/2010, 11:53 AM
Its a JOKE, we're not allowed to put FAN CASTINGS up but you can do this?????
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 11:54 AM
@Shaman: Didn't you do this article already? We've already had a very similar one on main recently.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 11:54 AM
He is 6'1.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 11:54 AM
How do you explain casting a horrible actor in the role of Captain A.? And I thought Ackles was out of the running for this part a long time ago. We should redo the `who should play Cap` poll, see who is the fan favourite now that we are all more educated on the subject.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 11:54 AM
I agree 100% with Shaman. Many say oh he couldn't lead the others, why not let him struggle with it. Also I could see Jensen going toe to toe with RDJ as Stark. Jensen can do this role and be amazing at it. He has the physical requirements (eyes, hair, etc.) all he would have to do is just hit the gym a little more. Jensen shows so much leadership and qualities of Capt. America as Dean that in fact he has been my choice since I heard they were going to do a Captain America movie. All I can say is Ackles for Captain America!

Not tall enough, Routh was not BIG enough but he got the role of Superman. Which sorry to say I thought was a horrible casting choice.

And I know LEEE is going to be in here at some point so I will post a retort now.

I don't get what your beef is with Ackles LEEE but serioulsy I would rather have Seth Rogen play Steve Rogers than the guys you picked. LMAO! Lay off of Ackles you are convincing me more and more that you must have some man crush you know won't be satisfied so you bash on him to make up for the pent up sexual frustration... =) ;)

InstigatorGIRL - 2/9/2010, 11:55 AM
Jansen Ackles for Robin!
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 11:55 AM
Hes 5'11" Capt. needs to be at least 6'3". In my opinion.
RIKSHAWRenegade - 2/9/2010, 11:56 AM
looks like shaman has a crush on the pritty boy! Sorry dude Cpt America looks like a man not a 90210 reject!
TYLERWINN - 2/9/2010, 11:56 AM
Oh my goodness. Not gonna happen, and dude, preeeeetty sure he even said he wasn't interested in the role himself anyway. Time to let it go.
Pym - 2/9/2010, 11:56 AM
@InstigatorGIRL He is 6'1 thats tall enough.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 11:56 AM
He is GD 6'1. ><
Here is the source
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0010075/bio

Dmon - 2/9/2010, 11:57 AM
He's 32 anyway,,,, they want younger???

Lol @ Instigator!! : D
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 11:58 AM
We also need someone a bit blonder.
RIKSHAWRenegade - 2/9/2010, 11:58 AM
Please... this is one of the worst picks fore Cap yet! He's no more right for this role than Will Smith... lol... Show me ONE non-fan-made incarnation of cap that looks anything like Ackles...? I get that he has fans and he's great on Supernatural, i'm not busting him for that, but none of that is a good reason for him to be Cap. In that case, why not Welling for cap? He has fans, if thats all it takes to be cap... and he has a better build for it. Maybe Ackes can play cap before he gets the serum...
MoonDoggyX - 2/9/2010, 11:58 AM
@Dmon. Yeah I know he's tall enough. ^_^
InstigatorGIRL - 2/9/2010, 12:00 PM
Robert Downey Jr. — Height: 5' 9
Jensen Ackles — Height: 6' 1
Chris Hemsworth — Height: 6' 3"

He is taller then Iron-Man but should be shorter then Thor
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:00 PM
LEE: Yesterday, you said that Ackles wasnt good enough to play Bucky! How is he good enough to play Hawkeye? ;)
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:01 PM
MoonDoggyX @ Lol pre-serum is right dude! ; D

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:02 PM
MISHA COLLINS FOR STEVE ROGERS!!!!! LMFAO. JUST KIDDING.
InstigatorGIRL - 2/9/2010, 12:02 PM
Why do we all need to know who Shaman thinks should play Captain America again after he already told us a hundred times before.

Ackles isn`t getting the part. Sorry bra.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:02 PM
If he gets it I don't want Supernatural to suffer from it. Supernatural is a GREAT show and I think if he does get the Cap gig Supernatural will be in the past. :(
DeathWalker - 2/9/2010, 12:03 PM
Dmon: Thor is taller than Captain America and Iron Man in the comic books as far as I know! So Ackles is probably the perfect height! :)
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:03 PM
looks like shaman has a crush on the pritty boy! Sorry dude Cpt America looks like a man not a 90210 reject!
TYLERWINN - 2/9/2010, 12:03 PM
JOSH @ A HAWKEYE cameo isn't a big role, an hell he basically plays HAWKS on SUPERNATURAL!! : D
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:05 PM
SHAMAN- GOOD ARTICLE!..BUT,

NO WAY! I'm sorry I don't think he can ACT
alongside RDJ and HEMSWORTH, he is OK for
an OK TV SHOW, but NOT a big budget movie,
plus I thought JENSEN wouldn't available because
of SUPERNATURAL..HEY maybe my HATRED of that show
is CLOUDING my judgement, BUT still he just an
OK actor.

That's like ME saying TOM WELLING for CAP!
but of course that's not going to happen and
I will be the FIRST to say WELLING would be
a CRAPPY Captain America, just like JENSEN would be.

InstigatorGIRL- LOL! good idea SETH ROGAN for CAP!..LOL

peterparker420 - 2/9/2010, 12:05 PM
looks like shaman has a crush on the pritty boy! Sorry dude Cpt America looks like a man not a 90210 reject!
TYLERWINN - 2/9/2010, 12:06 PM
He has shown on Supernatural that he can play the reluctant leader and I think thats what they are going for. Captain Awesome looks too shinny.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:06 PM
MoonDoggyX So you would rather have some emo "my acting skills consist of whining every [frick]ing episode" then Jensen Ackles. Whom has more on his resume than Welling and actually does action scenes on his show?
InstigatorGIRL - 2/9/2010, 12:09 PM
PETE: You hate Supernatural? Its a great show! And try to remember that all Hemsworth has done is an Aussie soap opera and a bit part in Star Trek! Ackles has his own TV show!!!
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:09 PM
Multi- Actually... yes and no. I never went that deep into the details before. I "refreshed" the points of view i had previously put in articles to make a more elaborate one. I thaught it was fitting with the news of Ackles still being in the running. Actually, your article was the first time we ever heard that Ackles was being concidered. Before that it was only speculation, fan casting and even Jensen debunking the rumour. I'm not only voicing my opinion about him here but explaning why he's even concidered. I mean, regardless of what we individually think of him, he IS a logical choice for a reason.

NubaX/Dmon/Josh/InstigatorGIRl- Thanks guys :)

MoonDoggyX- Are you that blind?!?!?! Or are you just biased??? Cause if you look up, the first pic i put up was Jensen along side a 616 pic of Cap that looks just like him!!! That wasn't fan made.

DeathWalker - I would honestly prefer the show to end it at the 5th season's end. To extend it would probably make it suffer more. I LOVE that show but i don't want it to get dragged like Smallville.
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 12:09 PM
Dmon @ You are truly lost if you thing ackles is CAP! : P

ARMIE HAMMER

or

RYAN McPARTLIN

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:10 PM
He`s saying that Ackles would suck just as much as Welling would.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:10 PM
Is it just me or have you guys noticed that new users always show up to bash Jensen Ackles in fresh articles and then disappear?

Hmmmm. . . makes you wonder how many accounts some people have.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:10 PM
Photobucket
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:10 PM
Im happy for SHAMAN he's in the running, but he still is HAWKEYE! : P
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:11 PM
MULTI: Lol, you have a point there! Hey, any idea why my Mark Millar article was deleted?

LEE: Agree with you on McPartlin but a big NO to Hammer - he was ok in Reaper but not right for Cap IMO!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:13 PM
JOSH @ HAMMERS that bit better than RYAN dude sorry, still either's good or TEDDY SEARS! : P

Hell Rick Malambri makes a better CAP!!

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:13 PM
And what movie did HEMSWORTH do so good that people think he can act. I have only seen him for 5 minutes on Star Trek and in A Perfect Getaway where he did not show any kind of spectacular acting skills. Sorry but because of TV Jensen Ackles more acting experiance and I think is a better actor then Hemsworth from what I have seen so far.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:14 PM
we should do a re-vote of who should play Cap with the supposed three `contenders` as options.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:15 PM
@LEEE: I this Rick has the perfect look, actually. I just havn't seen him act in anything to judge him accordingly. He does have the best look I've seen for the role yet.

@josh: No bud, I didn't see it

@Ryguy: Ummm. . . did you miss the poll that was on that article from yesterday?
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:16 PM
@LEEE777 LOL I think he is a lot better choice then Matt Damon. ;)
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:16 PM
Wasn`t that poll like 6 months ago?
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:18 PM
Dmon: Exactly! I dont get why a load of people say Ackles (or McPartlin) wont be able to match up to Downey Jr and Hemsworth - ok, fair enough with an actor like RDJ but Hemsworth doesnt have the same kind of acting range as Ackles does, who has his own TV show!

I'm sure he'll make a great Thor but Im still concerned that an Australian soap actor who was in 5mins of Star Trek is playing the character!

MULTI: No worries man, thanks! :)

Ryguy88: Yup, and Ackles won by a landslide!
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:19 PM
MULTI @ Yeah he does, and we've been told they want an UNKNOWN right??

Dmon @ Lol, i don't like MATT DAMON as CAP?? Not for a young WWII one anyways lol?!
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:20 PM
Ryguy88 @ Yeah it was about 6 or 7 months ago dude lol!!

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:21 PM
Multi- Good one! Ya it does make you wonder :)

Dmon- Very true!!! I don't get what the beef is either. Hemsworth didn't have enough lines to ever be concidered "great" yet everyone's fine with him being a god of thunder. But a regular kick ass demon hunter can't be Cap??? Makes no sense.

LEEE- That is quite man of you. Thank you for being happy for all of us Ackles fans ;)
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 12:22 PM
I could see it.

However, he's going to have to bulk up a bit.

BTW, WB YOU SUCK !!!
biggcess - 2/9/2010, 12:22 PM
Having your own TV show doesn't make you a good actor, especially a B-list show like Supernatural. There's a special place for all those brutal B-list TV actors, like soap operas or reality TV shows, I could see Ackles on the next season of "I'm a celebrity, get me outta here".
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:23 PM
SHAMAN @ No worries dude, id be pleased as punch if i heard one of my guys made it! ; )

Hey who do you want for US Agent?????
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:25 PM
Yeah, that's why i'm saying do a RE-vote, note the R E in RE-vote. It's been 6 months, things have changed.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:25 PM
@Ryguy: There is a R-E-Vote going on right N-O-W of just the three actors named yesterday. I should know since I created the poll:

http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Poniverse/news/?a=14729

These are the results so far:

Ryan McPartlin
782 Votes (38.64%)

Jensen Ackles
844 Votes (41.70%)

Chad Michael Murray
117 Votes (5.78%)

None, I'd rather watch the 90's Cap movie again than see one of these guys.
281 Votes (13.88%)

MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:27 PM
biggcess @ How does WB suck????

They are bigger an better in the animated movies field, and live action tv series, plus last two movies they did was WATCHMEN and DARK KNIGHT, the best two cbm's of the last decade?????

Wtf lol.
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:27 PM
MULTI @ How did CMM get 117 votes lol??

Damn lol, must be ONE TREE HILL fans! : D
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:29 PM
Ryguy88: Have you ever even watched Supernatural? What exactly is it that makes it a B-List show in your opinion!?
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:29 PM
One reason I like Jensen Ackles for Cap so much is because he is on the best action show on TV that is not a Cop type show and the character he plays is the best one on it. And as Dean Winchester he has shown he can be a leader. Also Brad Pitt and George Clooney started out on TV and on Soap Operas too.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:30 PM
@LEEE: I dunno bro, I voted 'D' for none of the above lol

@Josh: Any show on the CW is automatically categorized as B-List, even before it airs. A sad, but true, fact.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:31 PM
Oh, I see, well than maybe I should step away from this article for a bit to check out that re-vote, thank you Multi for your awaredliness. But those other guys were talking about the past vote from 6 months ago.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:31 PM
It's on the WB and CW.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:33 PM
LEEE- I have no idea who i'd want for US Agent. I've read very few books with him in it. I had sketched Joseph Gordon Levitt as US Agent before but it was a request from a friend ;)

So i guess McPartlin will get 60 some votes right aboooouuuuut... now.
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 12:35 PM
MULTI @ Lmao dude, hey ive got that 90's movie on VHS somewhere! ; D

Hey anyone, did that ever make DVD???

Dmon @ Supernatural is hardly the best TV show on TV lol, watch 24, LOST, DEXTER, etc etc, thats quality TV!!
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:36 PM
@Ryguy: That's why I don't listen to those jokers much lol They're too busy daydreaming of Ackles in a Cap suit to pay attention to questions.

@LEEE: Yep, I've got it on DVD

@Shaman: I hope US Agent never appears in a live action movie. He's one of Marvel's worst characters.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:36 PM
Yeah, Supernatural is worse than season 4 of Heroes.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:38 PM
What if Lost was on CW? What then? Would it automatically suck? I think an idea can be good even if it comes from a retard. And the opposite can be found with Heroes on NBC. Supernatural is a great show.

Ryguy88- You'd have to have watched all five seasons of it to even compare it to Heroes, which you didn't. Heroes sucks.
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 12:38 PM
Lost costs too much to be on the CW. If they went cheap on Lost it would probably suck.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:40 PM
OK so let me be the first to say Paulie Shore for cap

and why does Ackles always look like he has to take a poop?
bleedthefreak - 2/9/2010, 12:40 PM
SHAMAN @ Joseph Gordon Levitt isn't too bad, my personal fav is WENTWORTH MILLER, but Levitt makes a better AGENT than Peter Parker that ppl want him for!

Dude you gotta read more USAGENT, 90's stories are the best an he was in WEST COAST AVENGERS for a bit, not so good in FORCE WORKS though lol. Like his Black CAP look the best with shield, anyway best stories are when he took over the role of CAPTAIN AMERICA, im sure they have got to be in a Trade or two, you should check 'em out!

; )

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:42 PM
@LEEE 24 and DEXTER which I really like, NCIS also, are cop shows I said non-Cop shows. And I got lost on Lost after the 3rd season lol. Besides I really like Heaven and Hell Angel/Demon stories better then those other genres.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:43 PM
SHAMAN @ Nothing wrong with CW, i like SMALLVILLE lol, (did you see the JSA special? [frick]ing awesome!!)

Ive got to admit, S-N has got much better than it once was!

MISHA COLLINS for THE QUESTION!! : p

Dmon @ Lost on lost lol!

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:45 PM
Ryguy88: Dude, you're saying the sho sucks just because its on the CW - I bet you've never even see it! Supernatural has a huge fan base and is loved by the critics!

MULTI: Thats a pity - the CW doesnt exist here in the UK but I've read enough about the station to understand why people look at it so negatively! I mean, they cancelled Reaper, a brilliantly unique show that Kevin Smith had a lot of involvement in, to carry on producing crap like 90210!
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:47 PM
I just might check that out, LEEE. And Great choice for Wentworth Miller!!! I think he'd be an awesome choice, he'd sure make me interested in seeing the character on screen :)
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 12:47 PM
Supernatural isn't my thing so I'm not going to sit through 5 seasons of it. I didn't like Buffy or Angel or any of those shows that were on the WB. Was Xena: Warrior Princess on that network too?
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:51 PM
@Ryguy88 no Xena was syndicated. So it could have been on any station that paid for it. Here in Tulsa it was on ABC late at night.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:53 PM
SHAMAN @ Hell yeah!!! ; )

JOSH @ I havn't really watched any of the new 90210 show yet, is it that bad?? And ive heard theres a new MELROSE PLACE coming out,,, shhhh used to watch that lol!

I doubt though any of the old cast will be in the new series??

REAPER = quality show, pity they cancelled it..

Ryguy @ Dmon @ I loved them XENA & HERC shows lol, damn that new LEGEND OF THE SEEKER just don't cut it, like they did!
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:53 PM
Plus, money isnt always a sign of quality - The Hurt Locker and Avatar had budgets a world apart but I'd say that The Hurt Locker was not only the better film but also far more deserving of the Best icture Oscar!
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:55 PM
@Shaman: Good argument for Ackles. After reading your post I think I may be able to visualize him donning the shield.
jusme6 - 2/9/2010, 12:55 PM
@Ryguy88 Also do you like Brad Pitt and George Clooney as actors. They both started out on day time TV. Have you ever seen a day time Soap forget about B rated shows those are like C or D rated shows.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 12:57 PM
Having Kevin Smith involved doesn`t mean much, he does some good, some bad. He was also involved in Degrassi High, a pretty cheesy high school show based in Toronto.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 12:58 PM
LEE: Lol, I've seen bit of it and if you like that kind of show then I'm sure its great - I just dont get why they keep making loads and loads of stuff like that but cancelled an original, brilliant show like Reaper! I read somewhere that the woman who's in charge of the CW never liked it! :(
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 12:58 PM
Dmon @ You ever heard of "BATMAN & ROBIN" ?? ; D

Lets not talk CLOONEY lol.
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 12:59 PM
@Josh: That's one of the reasons they consider CW a B-List network. They never allow proper funding to be used for original shows like Reaper but they'll throw big bucks at teeny shit like Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place.

Here's a list of all the shows that CW airs and currently owns the rights to:

* 90210 (since 2008)
* Gossip Girl (since 2007)
* Life Unexpected (since 2010)
* Melrose Place (since 2009)
* One Tree Hill (since 2006) (The WB, 2003–2006)
* Smallville (since 2006) (The WB, 2001–2006)
* Supernatural (since 2006) (The WB, 2005–2006)
* The Vampire Diaries (since 2009)
* America's Next Top Model (since 2006) (UPN, 2003–2006)
* Fly Girls (premieres March 24, 2010)
* High Society (premieres March 10, 2010)
* The Tyra Banks Show (since 2009)

How many of those shows would you consider A-List quality?
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 12:59 PM
@LEEE777 your right batman and robin that gives me an idea CHRIS O'DONNELL FOR CAP
bleedthefreak - 2/9/2010, 1:00 PM
@Dmon I don`t think it looks good on you to compare Ackles to Brad Pitt or George Clooney.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 1:00 PM
@LEEE777 LOL I never said I liked George "Smug Alert" Clooney who gets high off his on farts. I just mentioned him because most people like him and view him as a good actor. But I really like Brad Pitt.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 1:01 PM

* Stylista (2008)
* The CW Sunday Night Movie (2008-2009)
* WWE Friday Night SmackDown (2006–2008) (UPN, 1999–2006)

Trust me, they are the epitome of a B-List network. That doesn't mean they have the occasional good show, but the majority of theirs would never make it onto on of the core networks.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 1:03 PM
@Ryguy88 Ackles has to start some where just like they did. Brad Pitt used to be a bad actor but has become better over the years. He was bad in Thelma and Louise and Cool World.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 1:04 PM
JOSH @ A woman in charge says it all lol!!!! : D

wait for all the female hate to come on to me now!

Heh heh, im joking peeps! : D

Yeah real shame about REAPER, it couldve gone on for a good few seasons yet dude!

Damn, Multi @ thats a lot of crap, only see SMALLVILLE an SUPERNATURAL there that i would watch! Maybe the Vamp Diaries, but not seen that yet, IF its as good as TRUE BLOOD i'll watch it!! ; D
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 1:05 PM
@LEEE: It's nothing like True Blood. It's a crappier version of Twilight (I know, hard to believe that's possible)
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 1:06 PM
Dmon @ How was PITT bad in that movie dude wtf??

Multi @ Oh lol, thanks for telling me! : P

Will avoid that like the plague then lol.
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 1:07 PM
@LEEE I like Cool World but it was not his best acting. My point is that it has become better over the years
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 1:08 PM
Brad Pitt doesn't always give great performances, but he has delivered quite a few gems, something Ackles hasn't done yet, maybe he will but I just don't see it happening.
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 1:10 PM
Multi, nice leg work putting up all the crap the CW is doing!
Ryguy88 - 2/9/2010, 1:12 PM
Great, and what about the part to convince us that Jensen Ackles is a good choice?
yellowtiger - 2/9/2010, 1:12 PM
@Ryguy: It just bugs me when people who think they have good taste in TV or movies say that the CW network is an A-Lister when ALL the evidence points the other way. Hell, I'd even say they were C-List quality.

That doesn't mean they don't' have a few good show, but overall they are severely lacking.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 1:16 PM
@Ryguy88 at the time he was doing Dallas and Another World would you have thought that Pitt would be as good as he is today? Or even Leonardo Dicaprio on Growning Pains?
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 1:17 PM
I agree with Ryguy88 Ackles has yet to deliver and i don't like his first attempt being Captain America
bleedthefreak - 2/9/2010, 1:18 PM
Gawd DAAAAAAMMMMMMMM, Multi!!! That's a bad list!!! And i mean bad as in shitty!!! No wonder people hate the channel!!! I mean, i don't have cable of my own free choice. I bought the seasons on box sets cause it seemed good and i was blown away!!! But the rest of thier shows i wouldn't even shake a stick at!!!

yellowtiger- Sorry, i left out the details of his amazing hand job talents. Call him up, you'll be entranced ;)

jusme6- Thanks for that AWESOME comment!!!
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 1:26 PM
MULTI: Jeez, that is a lot of teeny-bopping bullshit! :P I've seen most of those shows at one point or the other whether its on TV, online or even just an advert and I have to say that the only ones I'd say are very good would be Supernatural and Reaper...Smallville has had some great episodes/seasons but borders on being just average most of the time. Looking at the lists you've posted, no wonder a lot of people think that Supernatural is just as bad!

I may hate Fox's CBM's but they make a lot of good TV shows - 24, Lie To Me, Bones, House etc! I have no idea what networks make FlashForward, Scrubs and (what I would say is the best show on TV) Dexter but they're all quality shows that are lumped onto channels in the UK that are probably just as bad as something like the CW!

The TV shows you guys make in the US are a lot better than anything we make in the UK (for the most part) and a lot of shows apart from the big stuff like Lost gets dumped on no-name satellite channels at one in the morning! Thank God for the internet because I dont know if Chuck is even on in the UK! :P
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 1:31 PM
And talking of TV shows, would anybody recommend watching Alias? I was thinking of buying the S1-5 boxset! :)
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 1:32 PM
@Josh: Season's 1-3 of Alias are bad ass! That show is the reason they wanted Jen Garner for Elektra in the first place. Season 4 is meh. Season 5 was crap.

It's a good buy, though, if you're a TV show collector and well worth a go around.
MultiPurposePoni - 2/9/2010, 1:36 PM
@ shaman

great article man. but i can't agree with calling Ackles the "living embodiment of cap." but then again, i don't care WHO gets the part, as long as they're good in it.
CorndogBurglar - 2/9/2010, 1:46 PM
Thanks CDB! Yeah, that title was a real "clam steamer/gear grinder" for the people who don't like him LOL Ah well, he really wouldn't be the worst choice! At least the Ackles haters will have that LOL.
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 1:50 PM
MULTI: Thanks bud! I was on the edge of buying it and that comment just pushed me over it, lol!

I never used to watch all that many TV shows but after realising how many great shows I had been missing out on I now have a pile of DVD box sets I'm making my way through!

I dont know if you remember me asking you whether Six Feet Under was worth watching but I recently finished the whole series box set and loved it! I've just got The Sopranos, Firefly and now Alias to watch! ;)
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 1:51 PM
Yeah I have to agree I don't like the CW station I only watch Supernatural and Smallville. But the rest of their shows are crap.
InstigatorGIRL - 2/9/2010, 1:52 PM
Guys- Newbee just posted a link to a Jensen Ackles annecdote. Good stuff, you should read it!

http://tightropegirl.livejournal.com/8725.html
Shaman - 2/9/2010, 2:03 PM
I think what we really have here are those that want a some what unknown actor and those that want a big name actor like Matt Damon. I really want a some what unknown actor because I think they will work for it more. And most great acting comes from what directors get out of an actor. We have all seen where an academy award winnering best actor has been in a movie where they had a horrible director and as a result their acting looked horrible.

Jensen Ackles has yet to have a great movie quality director direct him. If he is choosen give him a chance.
Dmon - 2/9/2010, 2:08 PM
Ok I just want to point out that tom hanks first lead role was on a show called bosom buddies. It was about two guys who dressed like woman so they could live in the cheaper women only apartments.
I think he has done good for himself.
Who the hell were Pacino and Deniro before the godfather movies?
I am not saying he will touch what any of those actors have done, but seriously I think hes in just as good of a postion(or better) than they were.
Batson - 2/9/2010, 2:18 PM
Batson @ Lol, who knows!

JOSH @ Yeah buy them suckers, i have 'em on dvd too, great show! I agree, FOX has always done great shows and cartoons, even movies for that matter, just not comic book movies, (well the last few anyway?) have no idea why they cant do a cbm right??

Pity her ELEKTRA was lacking lol. (But i don't care what anyone says, TYPHOID MARY was the nuts in that movie!)

LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 2:35 PM

Good stuff Shaman. You're the one who got me on the "Ackles for Cap" boat back in 2008. Your sketches are amazing and that WWII cap is a pleasure to watch everytime.
I have to admit I gave up hope but MultiPurposePoni's article came in time to renew my faith. I respect you for holding up to you choice and even if Ackles don't get the part, it's still good to hear he WAS CONSIDERED for it.

@Too Short? can't you read? he's 6'1" which is taller than Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sam Worthington, Mark Valley... Should I go on?
I don't care how pretty he is, it's his talent that impresses me. Otherwise I'd be rooting for hunks like Jason Lewis.
Now I'm getting sick of people saying he can't match up with RDJ and Hemsworth... What do you know?

One of the main writers for House MD. has this anecdote to tell about Ackles:
http://tightropegirl.livejournal.com/8725.html

and there's this from the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/20/arts/television/20hale.html?_r=4

And this about his professional stage debut in “A Few Good Men” in Dallas:
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-men_0606gl.ART.State.Edition2.437258e.html

these are facts. Supernatural is great. F*ck CW.
and he's quite the entertainer :)

newbee - 2/9/2010, 2:50 PM
Good editorial Shaman. I'd be happy with Ackles as Cap. I just don't know how much stock I put in the article with him being a top choice with Supernatural filming a season 6. That would be tough to handle.

Thanks for the shout out!
DogsOfWar - 2/9/2010, 2:52 PM
Thanks Shaman you beat me to it :)
newbee - 2/9/2010, 2:59 PM
LEE: Thanks bud! Yeah, its nuts that all of their CBM's are crap - probably because they view them as nothing more than money makers and know we'll play to see them however bad they are! ;(
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 3:25 PM
Shaman@ this is going to sound a little weird but..

this was by far the best, most well-written, well thought out editorial i have EVER read on this website. ever. anyone who wants to post an article should use this as an example. it's easy to read, it just flows off of the tounge and as a jensen ackles nay-sayer, im now alot more open minded because of this piece. seriously.

The editors of this site should up-their game when it comes to what gets posted and what doesn't. just because you like something alot doesn't mean we should have to decipher through your typos and shout-outs and run on sentances. i haven't read everything ever posted on this website but however high the bar was before this - it's been raised and everyone should put more care into what they write and what is being published for other people to read with your name on it.

thank you Shaman. no homo

ps-im not trying to say eveything on here has been bad! no way! haha. all the good fan fic and news is why we're all here. i just really thought shaman needed props for this. i always try to give it up when someone has put together a nice piece.
OdinsBeard - 2/9/2010, 3:50 PM
JOSH- YA man, SORRY I never really liked that show
even when I watched SEASON 1 all the way through,
SORRY man, to much HAIR PRODUCT in that show! LOL
but really the stories never really did it for me.
If I want to watch a DEMON HUNTER show I will
watch REAPER!..but of course they cancelled it!
which I don't understand? I agree with MULTI
they waste money with REMAKES like 90210 and
MELBLOWS PLACE, and VAMPIRE DIARIES.
REAPER was FUNNY, GOOD ACTING, and a great show
all around, SUPERNATURAL is just a boy band
remake of a GREAT show called MILLENIUM!
A show from the 90's..THAT WAS A GREAT SHOW.
SORRY MAN..JUST MY OPINION, HOPE WERE STILL
FRIENDS! :)
peterparker420 - 2/9/2010, 3:59 PM
PP @ SUPERNATURAL is just a boy band
remake of a GREAT show called MILLENIUM!
A show from the 90's..

Lol, i like that heh heh! : P

JOSH @ Yeah [frick]ing FOX, they need to read and understand a comic book!
LEEE777 - 2/9/2010, 4:11 PM
PETE: Lol, of course man! We all have our own opinions! (you bastard!) ;D And yeah, it was a sad day they cancelled Reaper - I'm still waiting for the comic book they promised! ;(

LEE: Hell yeah man! Doubt we'll ever see that day looking at their track record so far!
JoshW - 2/9/2010, 4:23 PM
lol
SixSixteen - 2/9/2010, 4:42 PM
"SUPERNATURAL is just a boy band
remake of a GREAT show called MILLENIUM!"
I used to watch MILLENIUM --Yeah I'm that old :p and I really don't see how Supernatural is a remake of that show.
How about the similarities between LOST and Supernatural?
http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2010/02/lost-supernatural.html

CW sucks but Dean Winchester is badass

I'm out.
newbee - 2/9/2010, 5:06 PM
@Shaman - Yeah, I don't see it, so I must be sane- I mean blind.

@InstigatorGIRL - I in no way meant that Welling should be cap, just that he was just as qualified as Ackles.

Bottom line... Ackles doesn't look ANYTHING like any Cap ive every seen, though I admit, I could look past that. Most of all, he doesn't have the acting chops or the screen presence to convince anyone that he'd be the the leader of any team that has RDJ on it. He'd get outshined and out acted every time they're on screen together...

In a perfect world, the perfect Cap would be a young Aaron Ekhart. He has the look, the presence and the acting skills to pull it off no matter who's opposite of him. They need to find as close to him as possible IMHO...
MoonDoggyX - 2/9/2010, 5:37 PM
moondoggyX@ couldn't have said it better myself. if he gets the role - good for him! really. i have faith marvel knows and will address every concern we have during their casting process. but as of right now - i just don't see it.

i think you could write a good cap script that doesn't prominently feature the invaders. that would leave a lot of actor salary room for marvel to hire an a-lister. imo a seasoned actor for cap is more important than fitting in the invaders (even tho, yes, they are cool) and i'm willing to let tham cast an older actor and use cgi and make-up for the scenes where he needs to look younger before trying to shoehorn in a young actor who isn't ready or qualified for this type of role.
OdinsBeard - 2/9/2010, 5:44 PM
just watched the video that newbee posted-

nope, sorry, he's not cap. i have way higher expectations than you guys then if you want that guy to play your cap. maybe he's knocking it out of the park at his auditions, what do i know? but from all the video i've seen of him acting - he does not have what it takes - or at least wouldn't have what it takes for MY cap movie. i'm hoping for a lot better than that and you guys should be too

sorry if i offended anyone.
OdinsBeard - 2/9/2010, 5:48 PM
JOSH- LOL!..Hey I forgot about that comic! Now I want
to KNOW if it IS happening or NOT..GOOD CALL!

LEEE- ;)

newbee- HAHA, YA bad example, it was just the first
show that came in my head!, But I like
THAT ARTICLE ALOT! even though I don't watch
supernatural, I see the comparison! AWESOME!

peterparker420 - 2/9/2010, 6:16 PM
OdinsBeard--So, when do you start filming your Captain America movie? (it's not the anti-Ackles statement that "offends" me, I mean, I like Ackles, but I'm on the fence about whether he could pull off Cap...it's that you, and thousands of other fans decide that you know better than casting directors, professional writers, and the actual OWNERS OF THE CHARACTER without even having any evidence as to why they did what they did, or in this case, whether they've even done it yet.)

contrast - 2/9/2010, 7:45 PM
@Contrast - I call shinannigans! lol... So, are you saying that there's never been bad casting choices in a comic book movie...?
MoonDoggyX - 2/9/2010, 7:49 PM
Haters are gonna hate. But for anyone who is trying to be open-minded, yet hasn't seen Supernatural and wants to see some of his acting, here are a couple of scenes he's pretty good in that i could find quickly (it's hard to find vids that haven't been dubbed over with music):

Someone was campaigning for an Emmy nod for Jensen, so these are pretty sappy (which i know the h8rs will love), but i included them to show the amazing amount of range this dude has...

This certainly won't help his cause, but the vid is so f*ckin funny I had to post:

I was going to try to find more "Captain-esque" clips, but as I was reading through all the HATRED on this thread, it didn't really seem like anyone was questioning his physical capabilities per se, just his look. I don't get that, CAP is supposed to be a pretty boy.......that can F*CK YOU UP! The rest seem to think he doesn't have the acting chops.

Well, if those clips don't do it for you, I don't know what will. It's not often i can watch a dude cry without laughing.....honestly. But somehow HE CAN, then 10min later be just as believable when he's whooping someone's @ss.

Hope these help those on the fence.
Cheers.
Talontd - 2/9/2010, 7:59 PM
@MoondoggyX--absolutely not! Comic Book Movies have been plagued with just as much terrible casting as any other movie. My point was, If Ackles actually gets cast as Cap, all the Anti-Ackles people will automatically hate the choice, nevermind that we haven't actually seen him play the part yet.

I was basically saying, to sum it up, don't assume he's wrong for the part until you've SEEN him play the part.

That's the same reason I haven't decided whether I think he would be good or not.
contrast - 2/9/2010, 8:14 PM
@Contrast - I'm not hating on Ackles. Nathan Fillion is a better actor than Ackles, yet I can't see him playing Cap either. I liked Ackles on Smallville and Supernatural, but I have never seen him display any Cap-like qualities. He really has more of a Hawkeye personality. I do think that "Jensen Ackles: The living embodiment of Captain America!" is a little much, but if he auditions and honestly gets cast, I'd go see it with an open mind and just hope he proves me wrong...
MoonDoggyX - 2/9/2010, 8:55 PM
@MoondoggyX--Well, what it boils down to was that I made one of those rather nasty "blanket statements"...

I do agree that he seems to be a better fit for Hawkeye, just as I think that Chris Pine would be a far better Hawkeye than a Captain America... but as I said (then you said, then I said, then you said, then I said again...*out-of-breath*) I'll withhold judgment on whoever is cast until I see some actual footage.
contrast - 2/9/2010, 9:34 PM
I like Ackles for the role. Out of everyone mentioned so far, I would trust him as Cap the most.He has great range, and I really think a great director can take his talent to the next level. Whether he's Cap or not, Ackles deserves a shot at the big leagues.
TheQuestion - 2/9/2010, 10:34 PM
Batson- GREAT point!!! Danny DeVito started on Taxi, Chris Reeve wasn't "unkown" just "not a star" before being Superman.

Dmon- Nic Cage is also great example of how a director can make him suck to high heavens and another can make him shine like a diamond! It's not all about the actor. The director is supposed to be there telling him "No, that sucked! Start again!".

TheQuestion- I agree!!! He definitely deserves a shot at proving himself. He shouldn't be doomed to rot on the CW forever. When someone is good, than they are good and deserve better. Kinda like a promotion if you will. What i want to know is, aside from going through auditions, how could an unknown be more qualified than Jensen Ackles in any possible way? His experience is pretty extensive and not to mention critically acclaimed.

newbee & Talontd- AWESOME COMMENTS!!! Thanks for bringing us cool stuff to check out! The more the merrier so don't stop now!!! I want more :) Thanks for the comment on my art, it's always nice to hear since i aim to please ;)

DogsOfWar- No problem bud ;) And yeah, i'd rather the 6th season of Supernatural be about different characters. I think they should end the Winchesters run after season 5. I really don't want this show dragged and diluted to the same shit tv shows that are on CW.

OdinsBeard- WOW!!! That's actually an outstanding compliment ESPECIALLY comming from an Ackles hater. I mean, it's amazing that you can keep an open mind like that even though we're talking of one of Marvel's most important characters. Thank you so much, it means alot to me! I mostly try to bring this much quality in what i write but sometimes passion prevents me from being more elaborate. If any of you are interested at all, just click on "home" at the top to read what i have written in the past. I'm especially proud of my "Tale of the Black Freighter" :)

As for your point of view, i respect it very much. No one can please everyone. Ackles is definitely not for everyone. I'm pretty much the same way with any other choice for Captain America, i think everyone deserves an audition. If Jensen gets it, Great! If not, that's fine too because i trust Marvel. They haven't let us down so far. But i would really love to see what someone like Johnston could do with Ackles' potential. Just to see how bright he could shine. Even though i love Supernatural, i ENTIRELY agree with you in saying that we should expect ALOT more for the Cap movie. I don't want Dean Winchester as Cap, i wanna see what Ackles could do with Steve Rogers. All i was saying in my editorial is that he has had the experience needed for a role of Cap's requirements much more than any other actor for the running. Even though Dean has the same personality as Barton, Dean is a lot deeper of a character which enables Ackles to show his range in extremely different aspects. And since his performances are believable, that means Ackles deffinitely has talent as an actor and that should be number 1 on Cap's check list. No one has played a role similar to what Steve Rogers will actually be in regards to personality. But a talented actor shouldn't have difficulty portraying him especially with a good director on his shoulder.

MoonDoggyX- So... this picture right here... you're saying it looks nothing like Jensen Ackles? At all??? The bottom lip, the chin, the facial structure, even the physique... not even similar??? I mean, i understand that perception is relative but seriously, that picture right here could pretty much be pasted on top of Jensen without any photoshoping tweaks and it would look identical.

Shaman - 2/10/2010, 6:54 AM
Yeah I'm Sure that all the "fans" that want Ackles to play Cap actually read Cap's comics. Oh and this just in any actor on the CW is to never act in anything, ever.
Patricksayswhat - 2/10/2010, 7:00 AM
@Patricksayswhat So you mean Jeffrey Dean Morgan who played on the CW who had a recurring role on Supernatural should never act in anything ever? Incase you do not know who that is he played The Comedian in The Watchmen.

I'm actually a little bit worried that everybody posting on this thread will be dissapointed. It just seem like you guys have way high expectations. And those expectations are just not some that any of the considered actors are able to meet if you look at their acting chops in the series they have been in so far.

IMO Ackles has showed almost A-class acting in Supernatural and out of the contenders that have been mentioned so far, he is the one who can best meet your expectations. But not if you keep those expectation as high as they are now.
I realize that Cap is a very sensitive area for fanboys in America, but you cannot expect some unknown-factored 20-something looking actor(which is what the filmmakers want for the part) to be able to deliver a performance that will be 100% in line of the comicbook incarnation.

lyky90- I couldn't have said it better myself! Of course i want Ackles to get the role but what i really want is a great adaptation. It doesn't matter who gets it, i hope they will make him out to be great! We should all keep an open mind because if you only have one perfect image of cap and won't settle for anything else, you will definitely be dissapointed no matter who gets the part. And NOTHING can take away the great experience that Jensen Ackles has from him. That experience would definitely lend itself nicely to Cap's concept.

Dmon- Not to mention that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also in Losers as well as in the running to play Lobo!!! All that from a guy that was on the CW. So what exactly is wrong with Jensen Ackles again??? Not much anyone can prove aside from personal preferences that might never be met in the upcoming adaptation. We should all be lucky that they are concidering someone with the experience of Jensen.

This is nothing against Ackles but sometimes his fans make me want to grab my ridiculously expensive tv set and throw it down some stairs.

That being said, I wouldn't mind much if he got the role, but I just hope he would really bring his A game... or maybe his Captain A game... or something...

Exactly Shaman, Ackles has the experience to play Cap from his role as Dean, like you pointed out in your great article, which I forgot to praise. Sorry and here you go:

@Shaman: Great well stated article with good arguments. Oh and Jensen Ackles for Captain America!
