Speaking with Collider while promoting Underworld Awakening, director Len Wiseman updates the status on his upcoming remake of Total Recall, a sci-fi film released in 1990 and based off of a Philip K. Dick novel. Wiseman talks about the editing process for his film, saying that the director's cut is about two hours long (but isn't completely assembled yet). He also reveals that we can expect the first trailer for the film to be released in March, saying that he's seen it and it was 'great'. In addition, Wiseman talks about what he thinks fanboys are most excited to see in the movie.

Do you know when we’ll see the first trailer for Total Recall?
I’ve seen it, and it’s great. I believe it will hit in March. I could be wrong, but I think March.

Where are you at now in the editing process?
I am two days away from turning in my director’s cut. I’m actually just doing some finishing touches on it. So, I’m done with that, and the studio takes a look at it fairly soon. So far, it’s actually been a very fun process. There’s a lot of excitement around it, and I’m very happy with it.

How long is your cut at this point?
I think we’re close to two hours, but it’s not all completely assembled. We still have a lot of the visual effects shots that we’re putting in, last minute. I’ll be here for about 20 hours today, and another 20 hours tomorrow.

Is there anything that you’re most excited for fans to see?

I would say how much it really plays with fantasy versus reality, in a way that I wanted to dive into a little bit more. It’s a thing I’ve always been fascinated about with Philip K. Dick’s story and the concept itself. It really has to operate on two playing fields, at any given time. It’s either the fantasy or reality. That’s the thing that I think is the most exciting. It’s got a load of really fun action sequences and visuals, and a whole new world to experience as well, that is really fun, but what makes that all super-engaging is this constant mystery of what world we’re existing in, whether it’s his fantasy or reality.

Total Recall is scheduled to hit theaters August 3rd, 2012.

Two things I hate most about this site:

The spoilers they post.

And the fact that it reminds me that this abomination exists.

The Verhoven-Arnold Schwarznegger adaptation of Philip K Dicks book was one terrible movie. Fanboys may hold it a classic but in reality is was utter pants with cheesy acting an some of the worst cinematography for its time. The whole film looked claustrophobic and shot on a set.

This new movie is a remake of the silly previous one instead of properly adapting the book so once again we have Hollywood taking novelist ideas and doing their own thing with it. Thankfully though it has a better director at the helm and a lead who can actually act! Therefore it stand a billion chances of being a better movie than its predecessor!

@Ceejay: Is it a remake of the Arnold movie. I read an article(a few months ago, I can't remember the site) that said this movie was based on the novel and not a remake of the Arnold movie.

They were talking about how the novel actually takes place on Earth and the whole Mars thing was an aesthetic choice for the movie.

They were saying that by not remaking the movie, but instead basing it off the novel, the film could possibly have a hard time bringing in fans who were only familiar with the film and not the novel. Fans would mostly likely be confused and think that Arnold's movie was an original(apparently not many know it was a novel) and this one's just not being faithful. The whole article ended up centering around the fact that one thing they would keep from the Arnold movie was the three-breasted woman.

Is that wrong? I don't know much about this movie and haven't seen the Arnold for like since I was like 5, but the concept is cool. Isn't he some kind of agent and doesn't even know that he is?

The original came out 22 years ago. I think enough time's passed to justify a remake. Besides, SpiderAssassin's right, the original aired on the side of cheese a little too often.

I'm a fan of Len Wiseman. I have faith in him that he'll deliver a quality product.

@matmanisbobbin - It's a remake of the 1990 movie mostly because they're using the character names from that movie rather than from the original book. Whether or not they do the original books ending remains to be seen because that more than anything will really cement the adaptation.

I've just remembered seeing the old version years ago...and yes, it wasn't good as far as I can remember. This one looks interesting, yet I'm not so sure with this director - I mean, I've never seen any Underworld movie, nor did I care; but from what I've heard none of them weren't good, including the new one. But Live Free or Die Hard was great, though, so we'll see.
