At an unidentified future date, the nation of Panem has risen out of the ruins of what was once known as North America. Due to an uprising by the districts of Panem, a raffle is held to choose one boy and girl, aged 12–18, from each of the 12 districts to risk their lives in the Hunger Games, a ruthless competition in which each contestant, or tribute, tries to kill the others until only one is left alive. The winner receives honor, gifts, and enough food and supplies to never worry for anything material again. The Games, while entertainment for the Capitol's citizens, are a yearly reminder to the 12 districts of their unsuccessful rebellion 74 years ago, during which District 13 was completely destroyed.

In District 12, sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen cares for her mother and her sister Primrose "Prim" since her father died in a mine accident when she was 11. Each year, since the age of 12, Katniss has put her name in the lottery, or reaping, more than once. In return for taking this extra annual risk, she receives extra grain and oil for her family. In addition, Katniss has been illegally hunting for food outside the gates of District 12 with her friend Gale, whose father died in the same mining accident as Katniss' and who similarly cares for his family.

Prim, now age 12, has her name placed in the reaping for the first time — only once — and it is unexpectedly drawn. Katniss watches as Prim is taken away by four peacekeepers, and volunteers to replace her sister in the Games. She competes against other tributes, including trained "Career Tributes" who have been illegally training for the Games their entire lives, as well as Peeta Mellark, the male tribute from District 12, who has secretly loved Katniss since childhood, and who once did her a kindness she could never forget. Haymitch Abernathy, a drunk and the only living victor from District 12, mentors both Katniss and Peeta before and during the Hunger Games.

@NinjaJesus

damn i knew that dude looked familiar but would never have placed him as the kid from Race to Witch Mountain

and just speaking about this movie, i am not really sure how i feel about it. just in previews there already seem to be a good amount of changes to the material. also add in that to me it always seemed like a lot of the story seemed rushed, and certain characters and plot points could have been fleshed out more. also even since early in the 1st book, Katniss was never a truly likeable character.

I hate having to explain stuff about The Hunger Games over & over again.

@moviemann The Costume Designer did a good job I think, apparently you have not read the book. It takes place more than 1000 years into the future, and the people of The Capitol have outrageous outfits, it is explained in the book.

Apparently people here need to read the books. They are very well written, they are suspenseful & intense, especially when they are in the arena. Lionsgate is being smart by not showing what happens when they are in the arena, they aren't showing the murders & mayhems cause that is the way you get to see it, by buying a ticket.

This is not some teen romance junk like Twilight, its suspenseful & intense. For those who say it looks like crap & are not seeing it, your loss cause this movie looks about 90% true to the book. It should since Suzanne Collins the author WROTE THE SCREENPLAY, not even JK Rowling did for any Harry Potter film.

For the record I want to grow a beard like Seneca Crane

@teabag for some reason you think this is something like Twilight. Let me tell you for the record that I have encouraged & talked every member of the Dallas Mavericks to read the books and every one of them said the same thing after reading them.....WOW & Can't Wait for the movie, especially team movie buff Shawn "The Matrix" Marion. I have also recommended this book to friends, as has my wife, never, not one person, has said a negative thing about the books.

I will make a deal, you like this film, stop posting unnecessary degrading women photos and act like a normal human being?

@tea nah man you are the odd man out. We may like degrading people by selling their figure, still does not make it right. Come on man, you struck me as the type that does not need to justify yourself, just DGAF if you don't care, but have the balls to own up to what you say and do as wrong.

J-Law is like, one of the most beautiful girls in Hollywood ... she's stunning!

And damn, I've always had a crush on Alexander Ludwig! <3 he is huge! even sexier.

I don't find the attraction with Josh Hutcherson. Alex shoulda been Peeta.

@tea, nah man they probably make for some poor conversation. Offhand disarming response noted. Not interested in arguing about the sex industry or porn I see. Good, I thought I wanted to rant a little but the DGAF giraffe walked in, just keep doing what you do man. I used to have your fascination with lewd stuff like that till I took anatomy, man that spit in my soup, the human body is a joke. Society wastes its time idolizing it (small rant).

More on topic my sister really enjoyed the hunger games and I trust her judgement so I will give it a chance, it is a teen book fad, but that does not mean it has to suck. I enjoyed the parts of the soundtrack I have heard.

Sorry to throw the 2 cents in here... I just don't see the degradation of posting these pics of beautiful women by tea... The women knew they were having the picture taken and most are arching suggestively meaning they want people to look! Tea is just helping with their marketing wish.
@tea- I know you don't need MY defense, but you my dawg from way back! Keep helping those ladies out with their publicity, and maybe they will repay you and the missus with a little sumpin, sumpin...lmao
