Los Angeles, May 04, 2012 - Principal photography has begun on Evil Dead in Auckland, New Zealand, and will wrap in early July 2012.

Ghost House Pictures is producing the much anticipated remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult-hit horror film The Evil Dead; the film that effectively launched the careers of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise); Rob Tapert (30 Days of Night) and Bruce Campbell who played the Ash character and was Co-Producer of the original, now brings them back to produce an Evil Dead for today’s audience that’s high on the horror, gore, plot twists and more from a screenplay written by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Executive Producers are J.R. Young, Nathan Kahane, Joseph Drake and Peter Schlessel.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (SPWA) and FilmDistrict have partnered with Ghost House Pictures on a worldwide deal – excluding U.K. and France – for Sony Pictures to distribute the remake of Evil Dead.

Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

A core cast of young, fresh talent includes Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia; Shiloh Fernandez (Deadgirl, Red Riding Hood) as David; Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers) as Eric; Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore (Legend of the Seeker) as Natalie.

“This cast of burgeoning talent share the same spirit we had when creating the original,” says Tapert. “The desire to deliver an unexpected and outrageously scary movie experience for the audience.”

Evil Dead marks director Fede Alvarez’ feature debut. Originally from Uruguay, Alvarez studied filmmaking and communications, later opening his own production and post production company. In 2005 he won a scholarship to complete a masters in screenwriting in Amsterdam. In November 2009, he posted his four-minute short Panic Attack!, which became an instant viral internet phenomenon prompting intense interest from Hollywood and Ghost House Pictures in particular.

“We found a brilliant artist in Fede Alvarez. As a director, he understands what makes a story work and how to put the pieces together,” says Raimi. “I’m really excited to see this story, that I care deeply about, retold by such a fine storyteller.”

Evil Dead is set to hit theaters April 12th, 2013.

And Bruce Campbell as Ash?
Diablo Cody is awesome as. Jennifer's Body is so underrated and Young Adult is a little masterpiece.

I smell poop...gonna be one of those films people forget about in a year or two and when mentioned The Evil Dead will still automatically bring to mind Ash, chainsaws, tree rape, and mild hilarity. Wish they would have just made Army of Darkness 2 or some new Dead project with Bruce attached :/

"Cast of burgeoning talent ", or in other words, "cast of dirt cheap Mickey Mouse club rejects". Leave this property alone, or make Army of Darkness 2.

Army of Darkness 2/ Evil Dead 4. Totally.
Besidse, since Cabin in the Woods, just how much more of a post-modern take can you do on this scenario.

This sounds so bad...'a Book of the Dead'...Like there is a section in the library for such things. Also like how the synopsis embraces the ten little indians plot without shame. Will not even watch on OnDemand if this abortion of a movie ever gets released.

How is this much anticipated?? They're delusional. I doubt there is even a micro-organism out there who is remotely interested in another glossy, shapeless remake of an already great classic horror movie. The studio numbskulls dont get it. We love those classics because they were new, innovative, and awesome. They werent classics by being a lazy remake of something already out there. If they would release new and exciting horror movies in the mainstream (Insidious and Cabin in the Woods are a good start), horror might actually be good AND profitable. Remakes arent good and dont make much dough either. All the best horror right now are indie/underground films like The Woman, A Serbian Film, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil etc.)

Guys, I'm going to have to, unfortunately, disagree with most of you on this topic. I typically go with the majority on likes/dislikes because, hey, great minds think alike but this one...

Before I start in, just want to throw out there that the original Evil Dead was one of the first "extreme" indie type films I'd ever seen when I was 14 and VCRs were becoming more readily available and rental stores sprang up like mushrooms all over the freaking place.

It scared the living shit out of me. There was absolutely NO humor, other than circumstantial. It was straight up, balls to the wall, in your face horror. And then Evil Dead 2 came out. I had SO been looking forward to this but actually was extremely disappointed in the AMOUNT of slapstick humor that accompanied it. I know the reason behind the humor being added, I really do. And subsequent viewings resulted in it being one of my all time favorite Raimi films. Army of Darkness, while funny as hell, just really blew it for me. I LONGED for the Evil Dead films to go back to their roots and be the nasty little horror film it started out being.

I don't know what's going to come out of this remake. I'm dreading it/anticipating it. Here are my reasons for dreading it: Diablo Cody's attachment, the plot change, no Ash.

My reasons for anticipation: today's demons and ghosts are actually pretty well done as far as the scare factor goes (my opinion only)especially Raimi's own Drag Me to Hell. I want to see this new style of demon incorporated into the Evil Dead universe. Also, as much as I love the original, the effects are horrid. And before you start in, I know, I know. The year it was made, the budget, yadayadayada. So, take today's effects capabilities and apply it to the Evil Dead movies and we could have one HELL of a great horror film and also a great tribute to the original.

I'm just saying, give it a chance before condemning it. If it blows chunks, I'll be one of the first people on here bitching up a storm at the film makers!

@preacher

are you sure you're talking about the EVIL DEAD?

I watched when I was 14 too, and I loved it for the HUMOR and cheap especial effects.

the trailer would be decisive I guess.
