Michael Bay Discusses TRANSFORMERS 4 Story; Confirms Lower Budget

The director reveals that his fourth Transformers installment may go beyond Earth, while also confirming that the budget will be lower this time around. Additionally, Steve Jablonsky is set to score the fourquel.

While speaking with the LA Times' Hero Complex, director Michael Bay discusses his fourth entry in the highly successful Transformers movie franchise. He confirms that the film (which he says will be his last Transformers film, and will feature some robot redesigns) will have a different cast from the first three films, but will still be a continuation of the story. “It’s not a reboot, that’s maybe the wrong word,” Bay said. “I don’t want to say reboot because then people will think we’re doing a Spider-Man and starting from the beginning. We’re not. We’re taking the story that you’ve seen — the story we’ve told in three movies already — and we’re taking it in a new direction. But we’re leaving those three as the history. It all still counts. I met with the writer before I went off to do ‘Pain and Gain’ and we talked about a bunch of ideas. We let that simmer for a bit. He’s been thinking about stuff and now we’re getting back together next week to see what we’ve got and to see if it gels.”


Concerning the new story, Bay hints at a possible departure from Earth. “I think so, yeah, a little,” he said. “That feels like the way to go, doesn’t it? I want to go a little off but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded.That’s what works in these movies, that’s what makes it accessible.”

And Bay also reveals that the budget will likely be decreased this time around. “It’s going to be less, actually,” the director says. “Our mandate is to cut about $30 million.” For comparison, 2007's Transformers had a $150M budget, 2009's Revenge Of The Fallen had $200M, and last year's Dark Of The Moon had a slightly lower $195M budget. So expect a budget of $165-170M this time around.

In other Transformers 4 news, composer Steve Jablonsky (who scored the last three installments in the franchise) has updated his official website, confirming that he will score the fourth film. Michael Bay is currently editing his recently wrapped project Pain And Gain (starring Dwayne Johnson and Mark Walhberg).

Transformers 4 is set to hit theaters June 27th, 2014.

I still think they should leave it, but whatever. It would be cool if they try to take back Cybertron and repair it, but the Decepticons want that too. Either way itll be giant robots fighting.

Awesome to hear Jablonsky is back, love his work. Some cybertron transformers would be cool. Weird too know that TF3 had a lower budget than TF2, TF3 had lots of alien stuff going on and destruction

How will the budget be less if they are taking the bots beyond Earth? wouldn't that mean less screentime for humans and more screentime for the bots? thus they need all the money they can get in order to create an astounding image of the "beyond Earth" story route..

You should have done that in the first movie. Wait, but that would mean the U.S military would have to sit it out.

What story? You haven't told a story in any of these movies. They're devoid of narrative and plot. By the way, a reboot is exactly what you said. It's when a story that has already been told is taken in a new direction. Batman Begins did it and so will Amazing Spider-Man. Also, am I the only one who finds it ironic that he says this franchise is being taken in a new direction when he is still the director?

I can see it costing more to make than the last one......movies always go over budget just look at mib3! It doesn't make a difference it will earn boatloads of $$$$$ anyway.

Take it off Earth, bring them back home to Cybertron, make them face off against Unicron, bring back Megatron as Galvatron. If this is indeed gonna be the last TF live-action movie, then they better go balls out and make the finale memorable!

Actually first film was pretty cool, second didn't exist for me, third one was dumb as F-k but had the best action. Even if we are all hate BoomBay he can combine the best from the first(which is not humans for sure) and action of Dark of the Moon(oh common guys when Prime flying and shooting to your face in Good 3D is always exiting).So, hire a new writer , minimize humans(zero probably good time), Bring the action to Cybertron in good 3D, delete the giant balls and racism jokes and maybe...maybe it will be good.
P.S. If you read my comment, probably you get that I am angry robot that hates human race.
