BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide

Christopher Nolan's epic conclusion to his Dark Knight Trilogy has officially passed $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the 13th film in history to do so and grossing slightly more than 2008's The Dark Knight. Hit the jump for more details.

After about a month and a half in theaters, Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight Rises has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Christopher Nolan-directed superhero epic has now grossed $431.2 million domestically and approximately $574 million internationally, for a total of $1.005 billion through Sunday. This is slightly more than The Dark Knight's $1.0003B worldwide gross. The third and final installment in Nolan's Batman trilogy is officially the 13th film in history to surpass $1B (11th without being re-released), and only the third comic book movie to do so.

The biggest difference between the intake of The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight is that the former has been more successful overseas, but not quite as successful at the domestic box office as the latter. The Dark Knight made $533M in North America and $469.7M internationally during its theatrical run. Many believe that TDKR didn't make quite as much money in the United States due to the tragic Aurora theater shootings on July 20th.

The only other film to gross $1B worldwide this year is Marvel's The Avengers, which today has surpassed $1.5B, becoming the third highest grossing film of all time.

Awesome. Comic book movies are the bread and butter of movie studios nowadays. As soon as Warner Brothers realizes that (hopefully they have with talks of Justice League and other DC propeties in development), maybe they'll put more of their focus and time on DC.

Personally, I find it interesting that it made more than The Dark Knight without being re-released.

Awesome! I wasn't sure if it would hit a billion, but I'm glad to see that I was wrong! Congrats TDKR! Well deserved!

By the way, please don't start saying s*** like "suck it Marvel fanboys" or any variation of that. If you do, you're really being no better than they were.

@jerBear
I corrected myself in my latter comment. I'm just refferin to the group of trolls that have always said the movie won't reach a billion. I always knew both films would, I just like to embarass the haters.

I knew it!!!! It's a great movie my personal favorite of the CBM's this year but to each their own. This should shut up all the haters but we all know that will never happen. Also congrats the Avengers passing 1.5!!!

Where's Ramonsuarez at???? I would love his take on why this movie is still a failure.

As a Marvel preferer[?] Congrats to the Bats, I never had a doubt, and without that [frick]ed up shooting who knows which would have made more. As it is another great day day for CBMs!

If you think all this in spite of

I)no 3d (-37%, what does that equate to in dollars?)
II)olympics
III)Aurora (nuff said)

IV) Marvel doing all it can to scupper this movies chances (see John Romita and even "the marvelite" on this site)

TDKR success is nothing short of remarkable, whats even more annoying is that those snooty filmmakers who might be able to dismiss avengers by putting it in the same bracket as transformers, with Nolans batman it is totally different beast they cant ignore and only serves to add more credibilty and respect to comic book movies.

If that is the case, Avengers passing the billion mark proves nothing too.

TheStarSpangledMan, that's very true..some shitty movies do on occasion make big bucks. Just a swell TDKR isn't one then isn't it?:)

Well done to all involved - whatever you think of Nolan's take on Batman, it was without a doubt a fitting end to a great movie trilogy
