Hugh Jackman Looks Back On Darren Aronofsky's Involvement With THE WOLVERINE

Hugh Jackman discusses his next outing as X-Men character Wolverine, while also reflecting on Darren Aronofsky's (Black Swan) prior interest in directing the "stand-alone" film. "...he said that this was the best script that he'd read."

Speaking with Total Film about his film career (including his upcoming projects Rise Of The Guardians and Les Miserables) actor Hugh Jackman is, of course, asked about 20th Century Fox's The Wolverine. The film, which is based on Frank Miller's story arc which sees Logan in Japan, will be the sixth time that Jackman has played the clawed mutant. The actor reiterates the fact that this is a "stand-alone" story, and that he didn't feel like 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn't do the character justice. "For various reasons with the first movie I don’t think we got to the bottom of the character and I think that’s why, in this one, we’re calling it 'The' Wolverine. It should feel like a standalone movie," he said.

Before James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma) was brought on board to direct, Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky was set to helm The Wolverine. The director, who is currently shooting Noah, dropped out due to the fact that he didn't want to be away from his family for a long length of time while filming in Japan. "It’s a wonderful idea, which is why Darren [Aronofsky] was interested in doing it," Jackman stated. "He’d been looking for a movie for a long time and he said that this was the best script he’d read. It didn’t work out in the end for many, complicated reasons but it was kind of a reassurance to me that I knew we were on the right path."

The Wolverine also stars Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova and Hiroyuki Sanada, among others. The film, which is currently filming, is set to hit theaters July 26th, 2013.

Man Hugh I hope you're not exagerating. You can't really afford to do that without losing face with fans after Origins. Still can't believe how bad that movie was.

Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth and the one scene with Wade Wilson deflecting bullets(lol) were the only bearable things about it.

Scheiber is a good actor, so his base level acting is a given. And really, as far as the one scene, it was just reminiscint(or maybe it was just kinda cool to watch) of Deadpool.

"[H]e didn't feel like 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn't do the character justice." He didn't not feel it didn't not do the un-character any sort of justice at all.

This movie does look promising.
Jackman is a good actor & he does Wolverine justice but the flaws in Origins were not based on his character,it was other things that were wrong.

If they stick close to the Miller storyline we all are in for a treat.
Wish it was an R-rated film,Logan needs to be able to cut loose.

I realize R-rated films don't make as much money but screw that, making a great film matters most.
Box Office results are bullshit in the end when all is forgotten & the movie must stand on its own.

please, just let this be good. i like jackman, and like that he cares about the character. i am know he did his best for origins, but i am sure watching the end result was like the rest of us underwhelmed. action was good, some actors were good but that was it.

he got the job to play wolverine and since falling in love with the character seems willing to continue playing this role as long as he is able. us comic fans don't often get that kind of dedication to a character we love.

This is about the third or fourth article I've read about "The Wolverine" in which the source material is cited as being "Frank Miller's Wolverine story" and while I realize that FM did the art for this story, didn't Chris Claremont actually write the Wolverine Japan series? Where the hell is Claremont's recognition?

@cipher

Dedication isn't enough.

He doesn't look the part, and he's a shit actor. Only one of these two can compensate for a lack of the other, not bullshit "dedication".

And he's dedicated to the part because Wolverine's his only successful role. He has no career, if he has no Wolverine.

I don't understand people who say Jackman is a bad actor. He's not, he's a good actor who just happens to end up in a lot of bad movies. But watching those movies, you can still see that he's dedicated to the craft. Hugh Jackman is a rare example of an actor who never phones in a performance - he always gives it his all.

Not only that, but he's a fan of the character and completely dedicated to the role - many actor's would have long given up the role by now, most actors only last for 3 superhero films. But Hugh is persistent, and whether the film is good or bad, he's always one of the best things about the film. And the fact that he's so dedicated to the role seems to tell me that he wants to make sure that it's done right, and that he won't call it quits until they make a Wolverine film he's proud to be a part of. And he absolutely deserves that.

He's brilliant in The Prestige, I love that film and he really draws in the audience and makes them sympathize with him. And he shares the screen with Michael Caine and Christian Bale in that film too, and he completely holds his own.

I think, like many, I have more hope than faith in this movie. Still, like most people here (regardless of what gets said) I know that I'll be there to see it in the theater when it comes out.

unless the the trailer really amazes me or my friends say its really good i will be skipping this in theaters. The X-Men and Wolvie most of all have been some of my favorite characters since i was little and Origins seriously crushed my faith in these movies and First Class only solidified that (though better than the 2 before it)

To those doubting Jackman and his claims, remember that when he's shooting, he's seeing a lot of stuff that we don't. Deleted scenes that don't make it on the DVD, different concepts. I'm sure he truly believes that they're going to do the character justice. But when studios get involved, things sometimes get turned upside down. Have faith. The Wolverine has a terrific director and a cool premise. I'm looking forward to seeing how this fits in with the other films, even Wolverine.

Jackman has no career outside of Wolverine and he's a shit actor?

Won Tony awards for Broadway performances.

Held his own and shined against Michael Cain and Christian Bale in one of Chris Nolan's best films to date with the Prestige.

Is starring in this years musical masterpiece Les Miserables where he actually has to sing. Remember when actors were expected to be able to sing and dance as well as act?

The guy is super talented. You guys hate on him because he's been in some bad movies but that's the fault of the directors and writers more than him. This movie is sounding good to me. At least wait for a trailer before talking shit.

Won Tony awards for Broadway performances.

Who cares about Broadway beside people who live in New York and people who can afford it like rich snobs. Sorry but I think Jackmen seems like a nice guy and all but he not a good actor to me.

Also he says he passionate about the character and all and of course he going to say that cause the part got him recolonized as a house hold name and got him the gigs he getting today. But since he been playing Wolverine he never given it Justice. He always played him water down. I dont think he know the character of Wolverine at all. If he did he never would of done origins. Thomas Jane say no to the script for Punisher 2 cause it was crap and ruined the character. I am not saying The Wolverine not going to be good. It looks like it will be good. But anything Jackman says I not taking serious.

WTF !! the only poor argument jackman have to say is that one day the great film director Aronofsky was attached to the film, before leaving it for artistic reasons!
what a poor argument!
I already imagine the posters for robocop and wolverine with the inscription "not directed by Aronofsky, but it could have!"

so, this is the same man who said about x3 and origin, they would be the best and most faithful adaptation of the X-Universe on the big screen!
what a joke ...
