David E. Kelly Looks Back On WONDER WOMAN And Shares His Thoughts On AMAZON

Kelly looks back on the Wonder Woman pilot that he directed for NBC last year, and reveals what changes he could've made. He also shares her thoughts on The CW's Amazon and if he'd be interested in tackling another superhero property.

Back in 2011, David E. Kelly directed a Wonder Woman pilot for NBC, which starred Adrianne Palicki as the title character. Due to the mixed reception to the pilot, the network decided not to go forward with a series starring the DC Comics heroine. Last year, it was reported that The CW was planning its own take on Diana Prince, and a pilot titled Amazon, which will focus heavily on the character's origins, is now in development. Now, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kelly reflects on his Wonder Woman pilot and whether or not the character is fit for a TV series. "I still believe it's viable for a television series. I think it's ripe to do it. We made mistakes with ours. My only regret is we were never given a chance to correct them. We had a lot that was right about it and a great cast. In time, we could have fixed what we had done wrong, we just didn't get that chance. All my series have been a work in progress to a certain extent where you figure them out by episodes three, four or five. This one actually gelled sooner than any that I have had in the past. We would have gotten there and I wish we were afforded a little more time. I do believe in the potential of the series and I wish them well with it. I think it could be a great success."

Additionally, Kelly reveals which mistakes he would've liked to fix when developing the pilot. "We produced it at warp speed and it's a special effects show and it took more time than we were able to give it. We were able to give it more time and extended it had we been picked up. Just learning the storytelling -- the genre was very different for me and I had a lot to learn; my learning curve probably would have gotten better. I'm sad we didn't get to do it but I do believe it can work for the CW. They're smart to try it." As for releasing an early image of Palicki donning the much-criticized costume, he's not sure if that hurt the pilot's publicity. "I'm not really sure. Some people say no publicity hurts but I think any series eventually will find its footing and be judged on that footing. We never got to that point, but we gave it a good try."

Despite the mistakes he made on the NBC pilot, Kelly says he'd be interested in being involved with The CW's take on the mythology. "It's different for me, it's a genre that I have a lot to learn about. At this point in your life, everybody should do something that they're scared of; I was a little scared of it, I remain a little scared of it and be happy to wade into the fear again." When asked if there was another superhero property that he'd be interested in taking on, he says, "If I were going to do a superhero franchise, I'd probably call Joss Whedon [director of Marvel's The Avengers] and beg him to try and do it with me! He's pretty good at it."

Do you want to see David E. Kelly get another shot at adapting Wonder Woman for the small screen?

If they was given the chance to change it they would of made them right? If you can't do it right the first time, don't [frick]ing bother, they clearly had no idea who Wonder Woman is,because that shitty pilot was NOT Wonder Woman

She was a great Wonder Woman.

I wish they would reuse her in some capacity...

Excuses. These people are way overpaid for the products they put out. "We just needed more time to fix mistakes". No.. it should be awesome, right out of the gate. Just like the new "Knight Rider" bombed (oh, we needed more time, we're gonna listen to the fans now, we here you!) Knight Rider sucked. Bad acting, bad writing, and we didn't have David Hasselhoff involved enough, and the car sucked (no cool gadgets and buttons inside the car??)

Same old excuse. Why do you need more time to make a show "not suck"? You practice a speech, a sport, or a musical instrument BEFORE you perform. Maybe these guys should do the same.

The pilot was still better than smallville

The casting was perfect. I saw the pilot and Adrianne Palicki had a great athletic body and height that WW should have. She's 5'11 and really did have a commanding presence in every scene.

The only problems was that they made it too 'smallville-esque' and too feminine. It should've been more dark, more focused on the actual storylines and basically made her more bad-ass.

Oh, and the costume sucked.

Clearly he doesn't understand the genre and thankfully was not allowed to do any more damage than he already did. Amazon could have some good potential and if taken seriously could be better than Arrow. I'm looking forward to it. And yeah, hopefully the costume is better this time around. More like a warrior than a stripper

I know this isn't a good comparison but I like the Seinfeld example. That show sucked out of the gate. NBC for some ungodly reason stuck with it and voila, it turned into one of the most succesful sitcoms ever.

Then again 20 years ago they weren't so quick to pull the plug and the internet snark wasn't there to influence the suits at the studio as was the case here.

All the vitriol this show received based on a couple of pictures was ridiculous

Anyway bring on the JLA film then the solo movie

Adrianne Palicki was a good casting she was beautiful and tall, and she can act. The costume was perfect (For the comics) It was just like the comic costume, but that doesn't really work in real life they should have gone with something like http://fanartexhibit.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/wonder_woman_movie_still_new.jpg

The script was terrible but the fight scene was excellent, except for her murdering everyone, much like (Green) Arrow. But I hop WB do a film with a costume like above...it's not to silly and still honours the original costume.

@ Super12

I admittedly know almost nothing about the new Amazon show but from the little I recall reading it sounded to me like a farther departure from the source than was the cancelled show.
As a matter fact the new show sounded just like a knock-off of Smallville aimed at teenage girls.

I agree with Pharaoh.

"Superhero live action shows ARE A WASTE OF TIME. PERIOD."

Source? :-P

As much as some here will want to think so and whine about it, I doubt that Smallville is going to consider their 10 year run a waste of time.

Do it right by who's standards? I saw the pilot and thought it was great! Does "doing it right," and "fixing it" mean changing your creation to appease network executives? I think the same show would work on CW, I don't want to see another Smallville, (loved Smallville, just 10 Seasons of an origin story is enough. I want to see superheroes in action.)

That pilot was a piece of crap butchering the character of Wonder Woman. Even those who say it is a re imagined Wonder Woman or a more modern one. She was also just stupid in the pilot she broke a lot of laws and unlike say Batman who does some of the same things she does Batman has a secret identity. Everyone knew who she was she would be arrested or if not arrested she would lose her company due to the huge amount of lawsuits. Another really stupid thing in the pilot was she had two civilian identity what is even the point of that.

Wonder Woman is supposed to have real boobs—and that crazy belt (designed to hide the fact that Palicki's body is too long) would kill the stomach if she made any moves.

Please no to Miranda Kerr.
I find it highly annoying that an actual actress like Adrianne Palicki who also happens to have an athletic body and commanding presence was basically screwed over while fans keep casting models and even porn stars just because they fill out a costume. UGH.

That thing was a mess.

Kelly's shows were HARDLY -- in his own words -- a work in progress. All of his shows had a certain style and character of the gate, and they only changed format as they ran out of steam (this was true on Picket Fences, The Practice, Ally McBeal).

Palicki was well cast, but their version of Diana had THREE identities -- WW, Diana, the head of whatever her company was, and then some mousey version of herself that hid from the hullabaloo who ate ice cream and watched sad movies.

The only thing that worked in the pilot were the two fight scenes.

And @Rocky: That's a REALLY bad comparison. Seinfeld stayed on b/c the show cost a lot less than most others; it had a small cast, no sfx, no licensing fee, and -- yes -- no fans telling them they did it all wrong. Which they did.

As abhorrent as this seemed, I probably would have watched it for the hotness factor of Adrianne Palicki in spandex.

Mhm.

I still haven't watched the pilot. The only thing I liked about the show was Adrianne Palicki being cast as Wonder Woman.

Everything else looked like a disaster. I want to see Amazon on another network besides the CW, but I don't think that will happen.

@CherryBomb I still haven't bothered to watch the pilot. I'm thinking about watching it just for the hell of it.

Yah, the costume looked like it was picked up at a Halloween store.

So he was scared? WTF?! This man is dumb....

-Kelly shows his incopetence about how long it takes to dupe us into his crappy shows by saying,

"All my series have been a work in progress to a certain extent where you figure them out by episodes three, four or five"(Kelly).

-Really? we have to sit through 4-5 of your "Tampon commercial style episodes to "get it"?, come on.
And then he points out that he has no idea with the work he does. Dumby tells us,

"If had we been picked up. Just learning the storytelling- the genre was very different for me and I had a lot to learn; my learning curve probably would have gotten better"(Kelly).

-Get the F&*$ out of here!, Why does Hollywood hire these people?!
The money that they F*%$in' burn on dopes like this is absolutely retarded.
And Adrianne Palicki was never the right choice.
Did anyone even think that new WW outfit worked?
That SH!& was straight out of the Halloween Super Store with a hint of Spencers and T.G.I.F. flare.
Brawd was to soft in the arms and she looked like she was taking a poop when running after bad guys in that horrid WW pilot.
"My face melted after watching that garbage"...

And here is our disaster. The look on her face tells us she is taking ONE straight to the diaper... "Dueces :D"

Moses couldn't part cleavage this wide. Those Knockers are in each pit..And are those sweat pants!!??

This entire outfit is Goofy as all hell

Keep your eyes shut Marion......

I never cared for that outfit personally, even with the starry panties. I mean its pretty bad when fan cosplay can outthink a hollywood costume designer. I think this one (maybe with duller gold) would have been better?

If the source material is embarrassingly lame then you can't expect anything much better on the big or small screen. The excuses as to why this WW attempt tanked are hilarious. More comic corn than you would find in a whole row of silos.
