Guillermo Del Toro Will Try To Make AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS Again

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro offers an update on his adaptation of At The Mountains Of Madness, saying that he's giving the currently dead project one more try. He also says that Tom Cruise is still attached to star.

In 2011, Universal Pictures decided not to greenlit Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novella At The Mountains Of Madness, because the studio wanted a PG-13 rating despite GDT's insistence on an R-rating. Last year, the director stated that, due to the premise being similar to that of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, it'll be a while before we see the project come to life. Now, in an interview with The Playlist, the Hellboy director discusses the movie, and reveals that he's going to try to make it "one more time". "I'm going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We're gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested." Del Toro also confirms that action star Tom Cruise is still attached to star in the adaptation. "Yeah, Tom is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He's been such a great ally of the project." Finally, he says that he has finally seen Prometheus, and is now no longer worried about any similarities between it and At The Mountains Of Madness. "Not really, I saw it finally and.. yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first."

If Pacific Rim does well, then hopefully, they'll let him.
I just saw The Hobbit, by the way, and I could see his stamp all over it. His and Mignola's. The guy with a Kirby-inspired beard decoration was obviously Mignola, whereas the guy who had a beard-like ball-sack for a chin, seems more like Del Toro's sexual humor.

[frick] yeah! Thumbs up for At Mountains of Madness.

I rather see someone else in the leading role thou. Cruise has been in so many things already.

After AMOM he should definitely tackle with Swamp Thing.
Dont bother with Hellboy 3 if you are going to bring HB´s twin kids in it. [frick] THAT!

All of the Pacific Rim buzz with just a trailer, it'll be a hit. This will only help to get this movie made! And I agree, no Tom Cruise. That jackass is in everything.

At the Mountains of Madness is one of Lovecraft's beat stories ever... and that's saying a lot! I remember picturing it in film terms when I read it 20 years ago and, frankly, I can't imagine a filmmaker I'd trust with Lovecraft material more than Del Toro. He's put in some amazing Lovecraftian elements in both Hellboy movies and some in Pan's Labyrinth not to mention the influence that seems evident in the trailer for Pacific Rim. Sorry, Stewart Gordon - love ya, man but GDT takes it to the next level!

Basically, Del Torro is saying that Prometheus was such a failure as a Lovecraftian horror movie that he feels it OK to tell the story the right way. Great.

DO IT! PLEASE!

Enough with the Prometheus comparison ls, please. I'm pretty sure that all Del Toro was saying was that there was some concern, for whatever reasons, that there might be too many similarities between At the Mountains of Madness and Prometheus but there clearly was not. At the Mountains of Madness is pure Lovecraftian horror, revolving around the Cthulhu mythos whereas Prometheus is Sci-fi, revolving around the scientific concept of panspermia, with some horror elements thrown in the mix.

Again, the two stories are just very, very different!

@ Getsuga

Read The Outsider, The Picture in the House, The Rats in the Walls, Dagon & then The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

If ya dig these, then move naturally into his other stories.

I found "HP Lovecraft: The Complete Collection" on the Amazon Kindle store for a whopping $2.99.

The first story in there is At the Mountains of Madness.
