Jon Chu Says MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Won't Be Campy

G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu talks more about his planned reboot of Masters Of The Universe, saying that it's an origin story and that it won't be campy like the classic 1980s series.

Speaking with Topless Robot while promoting G.I. Joe: Retaliation, director Jon Chu talks more about his planned take on Masters Of The Universe in Sony Pictures' reboot. He reiterates prior comments about being in the beginning stages, which approach to take and what the world of He-Man will look like. "We're still in the beginning stages, designing a ton, and this is sort of the most fun phase, because we get to do a bunch of different designs of the world, and the costumes, and make a lot of mistakes, as much as we can, so we know where we shouldn't go, and where we should be headed, in terms of the tone and the look of the movie."

He also comments on the tone of the film. While I don't think any of us expected the reboot to be as campy as the classic 1980s animated series, Chu assures that his movie won't be campy and will have a "slightly more serious" tone. "We're going for slightly more serious, and I wouldn't say "serious" as a dark tone you don't necessarily want He-Man to be in, but it's not campy. We're not going campy. It's sort of an origin story of how He-Man came to be, and to me that gives you a lot of opportunity to create real culture in this world. What is Eternia really like, what are the cultures, what are the languages they're speaking, what are Snake Men, what are Beast Men, what are all these things, and how do they exist in this world? So we're taking a real look at creating life on this planet, on this world, that hopefully will translate. And again, we're in a very early designing phase of it, the script is great, but we're still very early at figuring out exactly how theatrical we go, and how real we go, and how dark we can take it." And will we see one actor taking on the roles of both Prince Adam and He-Man in Masters Of The Universe? "It's a little too early to tell. We're playing with the technique of how we'll actually pull that off." For Topless Robot's full interview with Chu, click the source link below. Lol Retaliation is getting [frick]ing trashed, I mean the movies pretty bad not going to lie but its RT rating at the moment any way is lower than Rise of the Shit. I have no faith in this movie, I remember reading a script awhile back when the rights were at WB I believe which was pretty badass different take on He-Man but it was still pretty damn good. Its a shame that didn't happen. Who's the writer on this movie.

I think the best way to turn Prince Adam into He-Man would be the way Steve Rogers became Captain America. Then they could use the same actor for both parts.

Retaliation wasn't campy (least certainly not when compared to Rise of Cobra) but it wasn't particularly good either.

Here's the thing. All of the cartoons and related merchandise pertaining to the MOTU franchise that have been released over the last 30 years have been ADAPTATIONS. The ORIGINAL He - Man story was contained in the mini - comics that accompanied the action figures. Over time, the success of the cartoon created a retail synergy with the toys and the line's popularity grew to staggering heights. Admidst all of the profits and excitement, Filmation's take on the franchise has overshadowed everyone's view on what the Masters Of The Universe property is. One read of those old mini-comics, and one can clearly see that MOTU was NOT originally campy! So if we go back to that take and grow it from there, all will be fine!

As much as I liked the rebooted cartoon, the ORIGINAL story in the comics that came with the first wave of figures, there was NO Prince Adam.

The cartoon created that garbage. Originally he was basically a Conan on an alien world, and that always seemed so much cooler to me.

I would love to see that version, but I think too many people think that the Prince Adam thing is the way to go.

He-man needs a little camp,it should be like Flash Gordon meets Conan he Barbarian with a dash of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.The MOTU cartoon form a few years ago was perfect.

NO to Hemsworth as He-Man,he's already Thor.
Wise up people,there are other actors most likely unknown that can fill the role just as Chris was a nobody until Marvel put him front & center.

@Gunsmith
I suppose you want Hemsworth to portray Thundarr the Barbarian too & why not dye his hair black so he can play Conan & every other big,muscle bound guy wielding a weapon.

Give some newcomer a shot at He-Man but hopefully that person has the talent that Hemsworth has & does a solid job like Chris does as The Mighty Thor.

I join in with JonF: no gay Prince Adam, rather a teenager that turns into He-Man like in the 2002 series. Best would be of course his origin as a barbarian, leaving his village to follow a mystic prophecy (like in the mini comics, similar to Conan). I think in general that they should keep it somehow mystical and not explain too much (a magic sword that opens the door to a mystical castle for itself was a great idea!). On the other hand, some revelations would be nice: reveal Orko´s face, tell Te-La about He-Man´s secret, etc. And don´t turn it a complete science-fiction -movie, which means that the balance should be rather on magic / magic swords, staffs, etc. than on technology like blasters and vehicles. A Conan-like He-Man, riding on his Battle Cat through thousands of enemies like Moses crossing the Red Sea, slaying them with his Axe and Sword - in the style of "300" would be right! And please: don´t spoil the whole thing by making Brad Pitt the new He-Man! I absolutely prefer Channing Tatum for the role.

I do like the 4 original mini comics that came with the first figures, I also like the 80's cartoon. One thing I definitely need in a new movie is a sky with pink and purple in it. It was pink and purple in what could have been the daytime around castle greyskull, so the plants and mountains and sky should look like in the cartoon. And I am not sure what he means by campy, but I like orko, I like moss man, I like roboto, I like stinkor, I like beast man, are any of these things campy? don't be afraid to be like the cartoon if it looks cool. check out magic planet video on youtube of a somewhat cool looking 3d animation based on the cartoon. And there was never gore in the masters of the universe, there was swordplay and grappling, and space age weapons mixed with iron age weapons and sorcery, but it wasn't bloody. There should be mysterious qualities about the planet and things therein, especially castle greyskull. I've made the argument on other websites about both sides of the adam issue. I like the mini comics, where there is no adam, and I like the cartoon from the 80's . I don't like the cartoon from the 2000's because that changes the age of adam from a teenager to an adult as heman, that is too much like space-ace or shazam to me. I don't mind if adam is the same age and shape like in the 1980s cartoon, but then it just gets down to giving him a tan, which is probably what the filmmaker is wrestling with. The mini comics have the goddess or sorceress give heman magical battlements and armour that endow him with inhuman strength, but could that version also say by the power of greyskull? that might be a good mix , and the saying could just boost his power? If I can get to see a live action version of shadow weaver, that would be hot
