Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura Open To A TRANSFORMERS/G.I. JOE Crossover Film

Bonaventura, who produces Paramount's two big Hasbro franchises G.I. Joe and Transformers, shares his thoughts on a possible crossover film a la Marvel's The Avengers.

Paramount Pictures and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are involved with Hasbro's two big movie franchises, Transformers and G.I. Joe. The former currently has three films (with a fourth on the way), while the latter just released its second installment, Retaliation. The two previously crossed over in comic book form, and with the success of Marvel's "shared universe" approach for The Avengers (thus influencing other studios to make similar moves, such as Fox for X-Men/Fantastic Four and possibly Warner Bros. for Justice League), could we see the Joes appear on the big screen alongside the Transformers? In an interview with Cinema Blend, Bonaventura shares his thoughts on the idea. He sounds hesitant about taking on such a film due to both mythologies being "so rich", but he then admits that he'd be open to it if the right story came along.

"I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other. I think, I didn’t rule it out for me and I think those things have somehow for me, sort of in the past, they made me feel like a little bit cynical exercises in just drawing money out of something. It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right… I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, “Oh my God…,” I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer. I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesn’t feel gimmicky in that way. I think that’s what I would really try to resist."

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is in theaters now; Transformers 4 is set to be released June 27th, 2014. Would you like to see a crossover between the two franchises?

Get Chu to do another Joe film to establish a franchise with no ties to Rise, and get Bays new trilogy going, I could see this. Transformers is fun to watch (in my opinion) and Retaliation is apparently dumb fun. We'll see.

People who don't read comics (unfortunately many) would see it as an Avengers knock off which is also unfortunate. But as long as Michael Gay is only needed for designs and not directing, writing, etc. It could be a great movie, I'd watch.

Problem is, once you cross those franchises, there's no going back. It'd basically be like the Transformers movies are now, but with GI Joe in place of the current cast of characters. It's not like the Avengers where they could conceivably go off on their own and have their own adventures. I don't know. That's just how I feel about it.

Wasn't Disney in talks a few months back to buy Hasbro? If that happens then who knows. Disney has done alright with their Marvel properties and I haven't seen or read of Marvel crossing over with Star Wars so if they do buy Hasbro I don't think I see Transformers and Joe crossing over unless they have a really good idea.

Go for it. I mean, who really gives a shit at this point, right? Hey, at least if this fails (which I hope for humanity's sake it would) maybe they'd stop making movies for either toy line?

Well, it wasn't so bad under Marvel (Hell, even Spider-Man made a came in Transformers). The Dreamwave version was fine, though I haven't checked out the Devil's Due take on it. The only possible issue (other than money) is logic. And really, just one piece of it.

Transformers on Earth? A big deal. I can't imagine a scenario where the Joe team wouldn't be dispatched or COBRA wouldn't make contact with Decepticons, at least after the second TF movie. It's just a hard thing to hand wave away. The NEST team were basically surrogate Joes at that point.

You'd have to fudge the timeline a little if you really wanted to make both movie continuities happen AND acknowledge anything that happened in the solo films (namely Dark of the Moon). Conversely, you could ignore all that and just blow stuff up real good (which is basically where both series are at right now).

Id love to see Snake Eyes running up the leg of a Decepticon and chopping off its arm, doing a backflip, and Optimus blowing it in half as Snake lightly lands on the ground.

Not a fan of this Joe series, but if they crossed it over with Transformers I'd watch it. TRANSFORMERS production values are light years ahead of the Joe movies and it would actually benefit from the quality upgrade. And I know it's popular to hate Bay, but I doubt Paramount would unload money on an unproven director.
