Zoe Saldana Says AVATAR Sequels Will Begin Filming Back-To-Back In Early 2014

Saldana, who plays Neytiri in James Cameron's science fiction mega-blockbuster Avatar, confirms that filming will begin on the two sequels early next year and that they will be shot back-to-back.

Zoe Saldana certainly has a busy schedule in the coming years. In addition to returning as Uhura in May 17th's Star Trek Into Darkness, the actress also recently committed to playing Gamora in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy (which will begin filming next month for an August 1st, 2014 release). But where do James Cameron's planned sequels to Avatar fit in? Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show recently, Saldana confirmed that she will begin filming the sequels in early 2014 (despite the previously suggested late 2013 start date). She also reiterated likely plans to shoot the films back-to-back. "I think that they're doing a part two and a part three and they're probably going to shoot it at the same time...If we just do two and then wait, I'll probably be 45 or 50 by the time we get to part three. It takes a long time, it's a very hard process." It was previously reported that Avatar 2 will be released in 2015 at the earliest, but a 2014 start date (specifically with shooting both sequels back-to-back) makes that uncertain right now. What would you like to see in the Avatar sequels?

Hopefully these won't be poorly-rushed cash grabs. I have faith in Cameron though.

The Matrix 2&3 were shit, but Pirates of The Carribean is still good and fun to watch, as long as Depp is in it.

Hope Avatar 2&3 will be as good as the first one.

Loved AVATAR. Can't wait for the sequels from the man that gave us such sequels as ALIENS and T2.

I wouldn't compare Avatar to SW in any shape or form but I remember other folk started that noise way back when the first film came out

I want to see this underwater motion capture technology they'rte developing for Avatar 2. That's going to make for some awesome action

hopefully it'll open Marvel and DC's eyes on how to go about making a Namor or Aquaman film finally

The movies will be loosely based off the plot of Disney's Pocahontas 2.

Damn, I was hoping James Cameron would've forgotten about doing the sequels. The first one was way too long, way too familiar and extremely boring.

@MARVELPSYCHO79 - James Cameron hasn't ever been an FX innovator, the most he's ever done is backed the development of a digital based 3D camera for 'Avatar' and that's it. All the CGi use and morphing innovation were used in movies long before him by the same FX company that provided the FX for most of his movies, i.e I.L.M. (George Lucas's FX company now owned by Disney.

I.L.M first used CGi FX in Young Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan. Years before Cameron used it in 'The Abyss' and 'T2'. Ron Howard first used morphing CGi in the movie 'Willow' long before Cameron's movies too.

@yingyangpalms - I agree, he also simply repeated the final act of 'Alien' for his sequel 'Aliens', with pretty much the last quarter of the film following the similar set of events as Ridley Scott's original. and most people have no idea that 'True Lies' is a remake of a french original movie called 'La Totale!'.

On topic, I find Zoe Saldana reminds me of Thandie Newton. Both seem like they need to eat a pork pie or two before they waste away.
