New Live-Action Star Wars TV Show Coming Soon

Rumor has it that pre-production is under way.

According to this awesome report from that crafty dick Russ Fischer at SlashFilm. SciFiWire reported that writers are being assembled in Australia to kick off the long rumored show in late 09. Here's what else they had to say:

"Goerge Lucas, who will be relatively hands-off as an Executive Producer, has said several times that the show would run at least 100 episodes, and at one point there was word that could be upped to 400. He has described the show as “Deadwood meets The Sopranos in space” and repeatedly claimed that no major characters from the films would be integral parts of the storyline, but that some characters could show up as cameos. The Empire will be rising in the background, and we’ll hear about the Emporer, but not see him."

Sounds juicy. But wait there's more...

"Early last year, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that Boba Fett would be 'an instrumental part' of the new series, which is set in the transitional timeline between Episode III and IV. Later it was reported that McCallum wants to see Daniel Logan, the young Boba Fett from the prequels, in the Fett armor for the series. The SciFiWire report says that “high-quality writers from the Aussie TV industry, including writers from Love My Way and Secret Life of Us” are being assembled. And a couple of months ago Rose Byrne seemed to confirm that casting had begun in Australia."

Boba Fett better be done right, or this will tank hard and fast. The article also goes on to say that Lucas will be self-financing, but does not yet have a distribution partner. I think if (and this is a very big if) this is done right, it would be perfect for SciFi channel's line up. Especially in wake of Battlestar Galactica's run coming to an end. Of course Caprica is on the way... But why not both? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Ill believe it when I see it! I cant see that they can decide how many episodes there will be-the first season might me a flop for all they know and 400 episodes would be something like 20 seasons!?!

As much as I want this series to be good, I see it falling way short of being enjoyable. I'm kind of worried that they describe the writers of this tv series former shows as "chick shows."

JOSH @ Because most ppl sci-fi or not like STAR WARS unlike TREK! How can you even bring up the word FLOP with STAR WARS???? it'll be a billion times better than that SUPERNATURAL! OMG Man!!!

Hhahah Thanks LEEE

The 400 episode thing surprised me. I could see 4 twenty five episode seasons, like Battlestar. Making The Sci-Fi channel a natural fit. I was also encouraged by the mention of Lucas taking a back seat, which is an absolute must! I have no expectations, so if it's really good that's a bonus.

I think the 400 episode thing would be incorporating possible spin-offs. It would be a ridiculous concept to try and run for 20 years. But more in the "Star Trek Mode" where they have 2 or 3 shows running at once.

I agree tyco I'll believe it when I see it. And if anyone thinks Lucas won't be heavily involved in this is delusional

As long as his heavy involvment is opening his check book and making sure the ILM crew is on point, I could give a shit. If, and again very big if, he can let competent people direct and write the story and dialogue, it could be worth a shot. If he gets greedy and forces (no pun intended) his bullshit toy agenda into everything, it will tank.

Billy black unfortunately I'm betting it's the latter version of Lucas who is involved. I think the guys an ego maniac and is not content with just writing checks

If George sits back and just writes and produces like he did with Empire and Jedi then this series has promise, now don't get me wrong I do enjoy the prequels but Empire and Jedi are by far the best and those are the only two Lucas did not direct.

Love My Way and Secret Life of Us suck
but in other news...
i think the reason this has taken so long could have been because of the writers strike and so forth and yeah i recall reading somewhere that the series had plans to break off into different shows which would account for 400 eps.
I myself live in Australia so hopefully everyone here at CBM could be seeing my face in some sort of extra role (i'm a terrible actor so a bit of background action would be all im good for) and hopefully it's not in the too distant future.

If you want to know how production will go... Look at the Young Indy series. It was shot on a movie type production value with multiple units in action. Expect different projects to be going at the same time as its been reported that this will be an anthology series. Four different storys with different characters should be featured in a season. With a 20-24 ep tv season that might be 5-6 ep per story arch. Will this confuse watchers? Maybe. This system is why George can say he is taking a hands off approach. He will still have to approve the different projects. Will it be good? Some stories are going to Suck while others will be worthy of Star Wars lore.

Deadwood meets the Sopranos in space? Does anyone else think that sounds [frick]ing retarded, and not at all like epic fantasy space opera? Does this sound to anyone else like something a dumbass producer pitches, just throwing out random catch-words and popular series names, to try to get something picked up? Lucas has no clue at all what made his original films great, and no respect for the fans, the ideas, or his own material.

I hope - desperately - that this will be good. More likely it'll be a travesty.

teabag: great pics, lol!

They shouldnt even be planning to make 100 episodes they should concentrate on making a good quality TV show otherwise they're gonna spend too much time trying to make too many series resulting in a bunch of poor quality cheaply made episodes! A series with Boba Fett as the main character would be awesome though!

I hear ya bro, I guess I'm just trying to be optomistic in my assessment. I know if Lucas' massive ego takes over, this will be another monumental dissapointment and failure. Is it possible he could've learned his lesson with the prequels and is humbled enough to redeem himself? Impossible to tell yet. But we'll know within the first couple episodes which way this will go. More than likely within the first 20 mins.

One thing is for sure... if he fks up Boba Fett, it's over.

I'm with with you on that one Anil, but I remember reading somewhere that Lucas doesn't want any Jedi in the series.

I don't understand how Lucas can make Star Wars without Jedi especially since there are still so many at large between episodes 3 and 4, hell there are still some in hiding during episodes 4-6.

@Supermike &Josh@ they probably wont do a t.v series after the fall of the Republic because that is when the novels take place, Lucas has stated that he would like to do something in the old Republic era though.

This has been coming down the pipe for several years now.
It would be great if it's well done and very good, but as someone else said, please don't let Lucas do the writing or the dialogue.

Who in this world could tolerate an hour of the dialogue from the balcony scene in Episode 3? If old hog neck writes, that's what it will be like.

This sounds promising, but if its like every other TV show it will start out solid, then get progressively stranger or just plain worse with each passing season. As long as the writers are solid, and are kept on with each new season, it could work. We can only hope...

Funny pics!

The reason the show is a bit behind schedule is cause they are working on a movie called Red Tails also. It's based on WWII black pilots. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Method Man are among the cast.

I don't like this idea. It's going to take place in between episodes 3 and 4, but it isn't going to revolve around the main characters?

So, it's basically just a show about characters who lived in that time? ...no Jedi, no Vader...that doesn't sound very interesting to me.

Why don't they just make a series based on a story that takes place 800 years before the events of the movies? We could see the rise of Yoda as a Jedi, and be introduced to the old republic and its past history.

Lucas has said it will be "one show that will split into four shows, focusing on different characters."

And McCallum has stated "It is going to be much darker, much grittier, and it's much more character based."

Lucas has described the series as "bare-bones" and "action-heavy", and has stated that it will be for more mature audiences like TV shows Battlestar Galactica and Firefly.

Fett has been talked about

Lucas himself instructed the writers of the Star Wars: Republic comic book series not to kill off the Quinlan Vos character. Lucas had originally written a scene for Revenge of the Sith involving Vos, but ultimately, he only got a mention in the film. It has been speculated that Vos will be included in the series due to Lucas' requests and changes made.

That is about all that is known at this point.

See ya in a week

HAWK out.

I give it the best of luck. Even though I'm probably going to start a war, I'll say it - I think they're doing this just to be more like Star Trek. Spoken like a true Trekkie ^.^
