Gavin Hood Interested in X-Men Origins: Magneto

The director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine says Magneto is a "phenomenally interesting character."

Love it or hate it, X-Men Origins: Wolverine performed well enough at the box office and in pre-release DVD sales to guarantee that there will be another chapter in the X-Men franchise. Recently, while promoting the DVD release of Wolverine, director Gavin Hood confessed that he would like to take a crack at the X-Men's arch-nemesis, Magneto. Hood said:

"I think the character of Magneto is still a phenomenally interesting character.

"He’s certainly a very interesting character—one rooted in childhood trauma and psychologically complex—and one that was superbly played by Ian McKellen. There are certain characters in the X-Men universe whose psychological life is strong and fascinating and complex. I think that’s why they’re appealing to audiences."

When asked if he would be interested in directing a feature film starring Magneto, Hood said:

"Absolutely, if I was asked I’d take an interest."

Oh hell no! He [frick]ed up Wolverine already. Keep him the hell away from the movie. I dont want to see Xavier being crippled by adamantium bullets, Magneto randomly losing his accent and Scarlet Witch becoming Magneto's wife! lol And ironically the Wolverine advertisement in the corner came up at just the right time as I just happened to pause it on the one reason I dont want Gavin directing Magneto: Stretch Armstrong bad rubber CGI Xavier!

So no to Gavin for Magneto or any other X-Men movie but who do you guys think would be a good director for Magneto? And not Zack Snyder, he is awesome and all but I would rather see him for Wolverine 2 or an X-Men 4 or first class movie

Great article as usual, Brent

Someone like Ridley Scott would be a great director for Magneto, even though I don't really think a movie about him is necessary. He's known for his period pieces, but can also make great sci-fi (Alien) and action/drama movies (Body of Lies)

And yeah, I'd rather see Snyder with Wolvie 2.

I'm probably the only X-Men fan who doesn't like Magneto, but I just think the character is waaaaay over-used already. I'm tired of him. How about Mr. Sinister or, better yet, Apocalypse?

It can't be Snyder. Snyder does things frame by frame from the books. The way the movie-verse is set up that can't work.

If he had been on the project to begin with yes. But he wasn't and therefore doesn't fit.

@ InTylerWeTrust

I like your idea of Ridley Scott, he would do a great job as Alien was brilliant

And I know where you are coming from when you mean Magneto should not really be made. I used to think that way too but I thought it would be great if they combined Magneto and Xavier's origins and make a movie that leads right up to the original teams of X-Men and Brotherhood being assembled and then First Class can lead on from there. But first, I would love to see a good Wolverine 2, X4 & X5 before the original actors get too old for their roles and then they could make the Days of future past movies as the actors being too old would suit the characters being old and THEN the prequels should be made

@ Bijous

And hell yea for Sinister and Apoclaypse, I would only want to see Magneto as a villain one more time in a prequel to show the first battle between the X-Men and the original Brotherhood from the comics

When is Colossus going to get his day in the sun? He's my favorite X-Man--cool power, cool costume, cool accent--but he always gets the shaft!

APOCALYPSE is okay but isn't he pretty much just a generic version of DARKSEID??

Well i'd take Gavin Hood wwaaaayyyyy before Goyer who was actually originally slated to direct! Be honest with yourselves. Which one was better? Blade Trinity or Wolverine???

Bijous, I have to disagree and agree with you, with respect of course. I love Magneto as a villain, I think he's one of the best Marvel sorta-evil villain. However, I agree that Apocalypse should get the spotlight in one of the X-films. I've always thoght that they should put him against Magneto and Xavier in the Magneto Origin film. Sort of "an ultimate battle" senario.

@gibby: No, no, no, Apocalypse is nothing like Darkseid in powers, origin or motivation. You're thinking of that hack FF villain, Terrax.

@airbeyonder: It's not that I didn't think Magneto was a good villain at one point, but c'mon, that dude is always coming back for more. I'm just sayin' that there's plenty of other villains that could be explored is all. We've already seen Mags in 3 movies; isn't that enough?

Maybe Sinister will be in X-Men: First Class, since he used to mess around with Scott's DNA in the comics.

Bring on Colossus!!!!

i downloaded Wolverine and I have to say I actually liked it this time around. When I saw it in theaters I was a little narrow minded about it but I think it was an overall good job. Beside the fact that Deadpool is like Sylar basically.

I dont really care who directs it, as long as Brett Ratner never touches another comic book movie again. I wanna kill that piece of shit. He makes movies to piss people off and thats it. He should have directed GI Joe and then that would have been truely garbage

Apocolypse has no substance as a character, Magneto is more complex and infinatly more interesting. he's a mutant before the world knows about mutants an intelligent and powerful one at that.

The Magneto origins is probably more suited to gavin hood's style than an all out action movie.

if it's made correctly this could be such an amazing film. but if it's full of random x-men cameos they'll destroy it

@Robsaggs: I'm tired of the current CBM movies because they try too hard for "substance." Am I the only one who wants action? I mean, we're talking about superheroes here! I want fights, explosions, laser beams!!!!

I agree Robsaggs! A Magneto film would be awesome.. He is a very interesting and complex character.. Especially if they can utilise Charles Xavier! Now those two have history!

And I know this would never happen but how about making a few changes and have Captain America coming across a young Magneto in World War 2!!!!!
Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 9/21/2009, 12:30 PM
Cool but unnecessary. Magneto is a deep, complex character but I dont see him carrying a movie in the same way others could. One of the biggest reason is that he is a villian, and whenever they make a movie about a villian, they want you to sympathize with him. Thats great and all, but it takes away from the darkness of the character. I doubt they will show magneto doing evil deeds like massacring innocent humans in the name of human progress. Likely, they will show him as the victim, and by the end, you will want to kill all humans to along with him. That takes away the 'badguy factor.' Still, it definately has the potential to be an interesting movie.

@BIJOUS WASNT Colossus IN X3?
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 9/21/2009, 12:31 PM
@Robsaggs. Apocalypse is one of the most interesting and complex villains the X-Men faced. He is near immortal, the "First Mutant". He believes in Social Darwinism. He has an unusual sense of honor that surprises many. And he looks cool as hell.

-Michael Clark Duncan

But most imortantly, he was responsible for the birth of the greatest Marvel comics villain of all time, Mister Sinister.

Mister Sinister (Nathaniel Essex)

-Keith David or Jason Isaacs

@swiftsword...Yes he was but it was like a 2second part. He is a cool character and wish we would have seen more of him.

Isaacs (IMO) is wrong for sinister. Not sure who I like yet but Isaacs doesn't do it for me.

Bijous - 9/21/2009, 12:36 PM
@TheHawk: Hell, yeah, bro!

@Swift: Yeah, and in X2, but just barely. Still, he never gets featured in the comics and he was barely in the X-Men movies, yet he's one of their most powerful members.

@Imran: Next you'll be saying that the young Magneto made Cap's first shield for him out of metal scraps...
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 9/21/2009, 12:38 PM
Yep, Duncan is absolutely perfect for Apocalypse. There is no other actor out there that comes close to him as Apoc.

I'd go with Keith David as Sinister, but Isaacs is a good choice as well.
Shaman
Shaman - 9/21/2009, 12:38 PM
I also think that Magneto shouldn't have a movie. Let's move on with X-4!!! Michael Clark Duncan for Apocalypse, Keith David for Mr. Sinister and Michael Biehn as Cable!!!
