The legendary masked avenger of the old west gets a Pirates remake, with Jack Sparrow riding shotgun!

It was first announced way back in March 2008 that action-meister Jerry Bruckheimer was developing a live-action Lone Ranger movie with Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio working on the screenplay.

Later rumors had Johnny Depp attached to star as Tonto alongside the Ranger, which was later confirmed by Bruckheimer. Now, in a recent group interview in Santa Monica, Bruckheimer confirmed that the project was still moving forward and that Depp was still attached:

"Elliot and Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny. So they're creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western."

Those "additional elements" are rumored to be the inclusion of supernatural phenomenon, according to some reports.

The only actor whose named has bounced around the internet as possibly playing the Ranger is Matthew Maconahay, but there has been no concrete backing of this casting choice.

Glad DEPPS gonna be TONTO now lol, rather than when he was gonna be LONE RANGER! ; D

Yeah i reckon MATTHEW could pull it off!!

Interesting, I've never thought of Depp to play Tonto. He does look like Tonto, but I've never seen him play a role like that, but I'm not worried I think he'll be fine.
P.S. No to Matt. Macaonahay for Lone Ranger. That guy needs to retire.

Getting a native Texan to play the Lone Ranger would be a good idea, but I don't know about Matthew McConaghey. I think I would just keep picturing Wooderson.

Airbeyonder @ DEPPS been attached to this a long time!! He perfect for TONTO?! We'll he has that red indian look to him too, which is a bonus though, the guy outta PATHFINDER wouldve been the best.

Some people have been throwing around Aaron Eckhart's name for the Lone Ranger. What do you think of that?

cant see depp playing second fiddle to anyone. he would steal the show which would be bad. just complete the circle and get orlando bloom to play the lone ranger.

Depp as a side kick? no way!

"true the western feel" hmm. well i guess it is like hollywood casting a white guy to play a native. so it IS like the westerns of old.

FYI, Johnny Depp has both Cherokee and Navajo ancestors.

I'm a little worried about how Depp will handle Tonto, but then again I'm a little worried how they're going to handle this movie PERIOD.

I don't think it will be anything like the old Lone Ranger series.

I wonder if Depp'sTonto will talk pidgin..."man on horse shoot gun?"

I think Depp is a good enough actor to play second fiddle thats what makes an amazing actor, being able to lay big and small parts no matter who you are. He could pull it off. Orlando bloom eh....he has one facial expression ever i like matthew for it

dont get me wrong. i really do dig old westerns its just that there are alot of talented natives out there, and im not comparing them to mr. Depp at all he's extremly talented. its just that with the times youd think they'd change the whole cast a white guy in a native role in western type thing.

I think that Depp in this movie would be a bad idea. For one he's not even native american which might just get some human rights people involved. But quite frankly I think that Depp is too high profile to be in this movie as the sidekick. I mean Depp has never been good at playing the sidekick. Look at the pirates movies, he was supposed to be a secondary character to Blooms primary but we all see how that turned out. Depp stole the entire franchise for himself. Another example is the new Alice in Wonderland movie. I mean the posters and trailers are all about Depp instead of the main character Alice. Depp is a thief. A spotlight thief!

@SolidSnake: Read above...Depp has Cherokee and Navajo blood.

@Wagonburner: As someone with Native American ancestry myself, I totally understand where you're coming from. However, as I mentioned above, at least Depp has some Native blood in him, even if he doesn't "look" the way we expect an "Indian" to look.

BRENT @ ECKHART'S an amazing choice, hope thats comes true, he'd own the LR part!!

umm, being cherokee to natives is like being the other other white meat. EVERYBODY's cherokee. and what i was actually getting at was it would be cool prolly not gonna happen but it would be cool to cast someone who actually "is the part" not acting the part.
superdog
superdog - 11/4/2009, 11:47 AM
wagon@ as brent has already pointed out depp is mostly native american. he is not a "white guy" in the sense that you are saying. he even has several indian tatoos on his body celebrating his heritage. he has always commented on how it is important to him so him being cast is not a slight by hollywood. trust me, the last thing hollywood wants to do is offend people who arent white or chrisitan.

It's about time good westerns came back, last one was 3:10 To Yuma and that was a remake.

@Wagonburner/SolidSnake: You're both totally right about Native Americans being under-represented in Hollywood, much like Asians and other minorities. I just read an amazing article (can't find it now) where they broke down 100 roles that should have gone to NA actors but didn't.
SolidSnake007
SolidSnake007 - 11/4/2009, 11:49 AM
Ok so he has some native american in him. As having native american in myself I can tell you that just cause I have the blood doesn't mean that I look like one. If they give the role to Depp what are those native american actors out there going to do, work in a casino? Lol.
wagonburner
wagonburner - 11/4/2009, 11:50 AM
and yeah i also agree that haha he Might actually steal this franchise aswell. hes really high profile. but i guess we shall see huh?

lol brent. that was pretty funny. im full blood spokane and i do work in a casino as a audio visual tech. that was good. ahem. but yeah i mean im just saying, if you went to go see that movie and you didnt know he was of Natvie Decent. would you REAlly think he would come off as convincing indian? haha it would be funny to watch him speak broken english tho. that would be hilarious.

im not saying they arent native. im just saying they're name is often a funning joke when some random guy says his great great great auntie was cherokee or something.

LOL, I love westerns, too, but I highly doubt this is going to be anything like "3:10 to Yuma."

@Wagonburner: I gotcha! I should have guessed your heritage by your name! ;D The funny thing with me is that I look like your average American "mutt," but whenever I go to Reservations camping or fishing or whatever, the Natives always see the Native in me.

@Macksimus: No, not that!!! God, that was awful!

I think what we're going to get will be very similar to the Pirates movies, with action, humor, ghosts, etc.
