It was first announced way back in March 2008 that action-meister
Jerry Bruckheimer was developing a live-action
Lone Ranger movie with
Pirates of the Caribbean writers
Ted Elliott and
Terry Rossio working on the screenplay.
Later rumors had
Johnny Depp attached to star as Tonto alongside the Ranger, which was later confirmed by Bruckheimer. Now, in a recent group interview in Santa Monica, Bruckheimer confirmed that the project was still moving forward and that Depp was still attached:
"Elliot and Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny. So they're creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won't be just a straight-ahead western."
Those "additional elements" are rumored to be the inclusion of supernatural phenomenon, according to some reports.
The only actor whose named has bounced around the internet as possibly playing the Ranger is
Matthew Maconahay, but there has been no concrete backing of this casting choice.
