Robert Downey Jr. Helped Re-Write Iron Man 2

RDJ not just a "hired gun" in the Iron Man process!

In a recent interview with U.K. magazine Empire, Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau said that his lead actor, Robert Downey, Jr. (RDJ), contributed far more than just his acting ability:

"Robert is a real partner in the process. He's been very involved in the [Iron Man 2] screenplay. When he went away to do Sherlock Holmes, he was still part of our creative process. Even in the first film, where he was originally a hired gun playing the role, he really stepped up to rewrite scenes - he's a great writer, too. So we really are sharing the responsibilities."

For his part, RDJ said that he had an intuition about how Tony Stark should be portrayed in the first film:

"I have fortified my belief that if I have a creative instinct about something, usually it's not because I've had too much coffee or because I'm bored - it's because I sense there's something there. And it's always mind-blowing when you follow a hunch and realise it's exactly what the movie wanted."

RDJ went on to say that they were not content to simply let the momentum of the first Iron Man carry them through the sequel:

"We are grinding our minds and hearts in the ground on this movie. Could we have just skated through a sequel and would it probably have made the same box-office numbers? Yes, sure."

Good find, Brent. It certainly begs the question to how much influence RDJ had, and how it contributed to the success of the first IM movie.

RDJ is the man!

It seems like he just says whatever he is thinking though. Just a couple days ago he said he has no future plans, right? Then he says he will bounce back and forth between IM and Holmes until he retires. Hmm...maybe he does drink too much coffee! ;P

I suppose that his past experiences (you know, substance abuse, arrest, the stop to his career) make him to have a darkest vision of the future. Don't you think?

From the sound of things, they're setting up War Machine to be a big part of Iron Man 3, maybe even THE Iron Man in that film.

Great! However good a writer RDJ may or may not be its excellent to know that he involves himself so much in the movie - its shows he cares about these movies and hopefully he'll stick around for a while! :)

Who better to help adapt the screenplay than the artist that brought tony Stark to life? This is no surprise

I didn't know RDJ was a telepath! I mean, look at the words he uses, "I sense there's something there" or "mind-blowing you" Woh ho ho there buddy! or "grinding our minds and hearts and giving sacrifice into ground for this movie." Woh, witchcraft! RDJ plays a good super hero because he has super powers of his own.

@Betty & DarthMulder- LOL Nice one guys.
I always know there was something special about this film series, but to have so many incredible artist and actors working together to make it happen is... well, the only word I can think of is EPIC. I knew RDJ was the only guy in ALL of Hollywood to play as Stark, and the fact that he has thrown his hat into the writers pool is above and beyond my original expectations.
RDJ is THE MAN!
