Dolph Lundgren: Superhero Movies Are for "Little Kids"

Lundgren says he's not a fan of the genre, but that doesn't mean he won't dust off his leather He-Man underwear for another go at Masters of the Universe!

In a recent interview in support of his new movie, Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Dolph Lundgren confessed that he doesn't care for CG-driven movies or superhero flicks (sorry, CBMers):

"There's such an outpouring of superhero movies, that I'm not really interested so much in — guys flying from building to building, in funny looking suits. I think it's more for little kids, and that's obviously a very CG-driven film, where you can take anybody off the streets and make them a superhero, and that's what the common man likes, because they can dream about being a superhero."

Lundgren's memory must not be what it once was, because when he was asked about his turn as He-Man in Masters of the Universe, Lundgren said that it was "the only" superhero movie that he starred in, clearly forgetting about his turn as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher:

"Yeah I was wearing leather underwear [in He-Man]. It was very cold on the set, I remember. That was a bit of a superhero, you're right. That was the only one I've done, that was a fun movie, it was a kids' movie. There's nothing wrong with it, that was 25 years ago. There's nothing wrong with those movies, they're fun... I heard about that [remake] a couple years back. They said that Brad Pitt was going to play the role or something. But no I haven't heard about it. There's a new Conan being made, there's been plenty of Punishers, I think there's been two or three after I did mine. There are too many superheroes to keep track of, I'm a little bit lost. But I think it's cool. There's an appetite for the escapism."

And, Lundgren said that he wouldn't mind dusting off the old leather briefs to become He-Man once again:

"Yeah, why not. Why not. [Laughs] Even if I had to put the suit back on, I'd do it."

As for how Lundgren will be able to come back in Regeneration when his character was killed off, Lundgren said moviegoers simply don't care about continuity in movies anymore:

"I think these days, people don't question these things, it's not like back in the old days. Whereas now, if the movie is entertaining, if the character works, you could bring him back 100 times, even if he's killed every time. It doesn't matter, people don't have time to think about this stuff anymore."

Universal Soldier: Regeneration is now out on DVD!

Wow, he sounds like a man with a distinct lack of imagination... might explain why he's such a "spectacular" performer (note the sarcasm).

Honestly though, I imagine that all those 80s and 90s action stars that can't find work are all a little put off by the success of the super hero genre. Note to them; instead of being bitter about it and referring to guys like Tobey McGuire, Robert Downey Jr., Will Smith and Christian Bale as "anybody off the street" maybe take some acting lessons and try to have a more open mind. Just sayin.

So the summary of this is Dolph is that he contradicts himself and he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about? lol. "I don't think highly of superheros but I think they are cool"... makes no sense. Then he says that people don't care about continuity anymore is the whopper of that interview. He has it backwards, and I'm kinda irritated that he's that stupid about it. Back in the day there was no plot, just cheesy dialogue, NOW, if you leave the smallest skid mark on film, every die hard fan will rip it apart. We are more needy now than we have ever been, we care MORE now about continuity in this day in age than the entire lifespan of cinema. Dolph couldn't be more wrong in every aspect of this interview.

I hate it when people don't know what the [frick] they are talking about and say it outloud. I'm frustrated lol.

i totally understand where he is commin from...in the 80's and 90's...people actually had 2 go 2 the gym and lift weights and do stunts and all that 2 be an action star...now alot of it is replaced with cosmetic suits and cgi...its kinda a slap in the face 2 the older guys like him and sly and arnald and them....hence the reason they r making the expndables...2 remind people what action movies used 2 be all about...dont hate on him 4 his opinion...its like yesterdays..we all hav em!

Mutanx X, thats true from one perspective, but they also didn't need to be actually able to act either did they? All the muscles in the world won't give you talent. That being said I did see Old Dolph in one movie that he wasn't bad in, Men Of War..a pretty decent war movie from about 10 years ago..thats it.

I dont really get what he meant about superhero movies being about escapism. Its true that they are, but only just as much as every other movie ever made!

InFamouslyCool, I've learned over the years there is no such thing as a bad character. Just bad writing. A character nobody cares about can quickly become a hit movie or a top selling monthly comic book title. Look what all the nay sayers said before Iron Man came out 2 years ago.

Teabag @ "Stallone still does well". He does? Pray tell. They both are in Expendables. Other than that there's only been the Rambo remake the last 3 years, which isn't saying much. ;-)

RorMachine- I do believe Old Dolph nailed Charlotte Lewis in that film, didn't he?

Ranger14- That last Rambo film was critically acclaimed AND he directed it himself so yeah... compared to old Dolph here, he's doing incredibly well. Not everyone does as well as Brad Pitt but it doesn't mean that they aren't doing well at all.

what a douche bag.

@ Infamously: Fans of the character give a "frick". CBMs have a boat load of non comic reading fans that seek them out simply because they like the movies. That's actually a lot of people.
Basically your statment is utterly ludacrous

Both of infamouslycools statements were ludicrous!

Shaman I couldn't tell ya..I just remember all the death and blood and surprisingly solid acting for a B movie.

Stallone is doing very well. Personally I thought the last Rambo sucked ass but I loved the last Rocky! Speaking of old droopy face, I watched Copland the other night, hadn't seen it in years, very underrated movie.

Shaman - 2/16/2010, 7:29 AM
Ror- What part of the last Rambo made you feel it sucked ass when compared to the last three? Cause i thought they were pretty much in the same league. I enjoyed the last one more than the third one which was my favorite as a kid. The second was cool and it's been too long to remember the first. I know i really didn't like the first as a kid but i can't remember any of it. Is the fourth the only one you dislike or do you think all of them suck?

And wasn't the bad guy in MOW the same that played Kano in the first Mortal Kombat? I always remember the part where he grabs a turkey leg, bites it and throws it on the floor after. Such a waste of a good turkey leg! Oh yeah, and he even spits out the bite he took!!! Oh the humanityyyyyyyyy :((

Well... i'm hungry, aren't i?

Shaman@ Critically acclaimed? By who? Rotten Tomatoes Top Critics have it rated at 25%, T-Meter critics at 37%. I am finding information that refers to Stallone as being critically acclaimed for First Blood, but nothing stating Rambo 4 was critically acclaimed. Every reference I can find says that Stallone has never recaptured his critical acclaim since First Blood.

teabag@ He has had 1 movie the last 3 or 4 years and it is the redundant Rambo sequel that is going to get attention for what he did earlier on in his career. Yes, one big name movie. I guess we will say he is doing well at Rambo sequels every now and then...and now Expendables.

Ranger14- Really??? Hmmmm...??? That's pretty weird. I mean, i have no references but i remember when it came out and everyone was raving about it. Read a few papers that had positive reviews. I guess i was wrong on that one. I liked it LOL ;P
Ranger14

Shaman @ It's all good. We know that tastes in movies run all over the board here.

First Blood had something unique as he wasn't saving someone, just trying to survive. I found Rambo IV to be the same as the other sequels, just a different location and different people to save. I lost interest in them after Rambo II. Different strokes for different folks. :-)

teabag@ I have a saying... "Success is not achieved through another's eyes, but in one's own heart." If Stallone is happy and making money, then all the power to him. I just think by the standards of other actors out there, he hasn't been doing much. Financially, I am sure he is doing quite well. As far as the acting realm, it seems his career hasn't been doing that great.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 2/16/2010, 7:41 AM
@ Mskyle: Indeed ;)

Dolpho's attitude is actually a very common one.

Non readers look at comic books like they are saturday morning cartoons on paper. Meanwhile they are simply unaware of the intellectual themes, the highly imaginative sci fi, the creative story telling, the drama, the use of contemporary themes... any one of those things can and do appeal to adult readers around the world.

It's a common but unfortunate misconception.

Personally I would have thought old Drago would know better than this. pffft

Shaman I loved First Blood as a kid..and still think it holds up pretty well. Never liked the next 2 even as a kid because they were just rehashes of the first one only worse. I get that they are just action movies and stuff but they just did nothing for me. The 4th one was just a joke I thought. Flying limbs, exploding heads, burning babies..and no plot. Just an excuse to show extreme violence for no good reason.

Teabag@ It's all relative. We may not think Lundgren is doing well. Lundgren hasn't been a major film guy for some time now. He isn't Stallone, but in his realm he has been doing steady work. For him, he might be very happy with the 5 movies he has filmed the last 3 years. I have a good friend in the business who is constantly filming movies and is very happy, though none of them have been big name movies. Compared to many actors he is doing well. Lundgren still is working more than people like Stallone. Perhaps Stallone doesn't need to and doesn't want to work as much anymore. All the power to him.

Shaman - 2/16/2010, 8:02 AM
RorMachine & Ranger14- Great points. I have to say i agree with you both but i still like those out of nostalgia for my childhood. Which is why i liked the 4th since it fit right in to the sequels' league. I don't know why but for some reason, Rambo passes where many other simple minded action films fail. I guess it's just a love for the "character" himself. IMO, no one is Rambo but Rambo. But i would have drawn the line at Rambo 5 where he goes off hunting a "feral beast". That's just too much.
