Seth Rogen Discusses The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen says the popularity of comic book movies has allowed him to "subvert" the genre with The Green Hornet!

Seth Rogen's long overdue superhero movie The Green Hornet appears to finally be taking shape after numerous setbacks including the loss of Stephen Chow as director and Green Hornet's sidekick, Kato; the loss of Nicolas Cage as the main villain, Chudnofsky; and a real bomb scare on the set that nearly derailed the production. However, with a big push for the movie set for the San Diego Comic-Con next week, Rogen is finally talking about the movie!

In a new interview with Collider, Rogen said that the popularity of comic book movies among the general moviegoing audience has paved the way for studios to be more flexible with the approach filmmakers are taking to the genre.

"People are aware of [comic book culture]. It’s something that I’ve been a comic book fan since I was a kid, so to me and Evan, it’s always been inherent. We’ve always known who Jor-El was. Now a whole new generation of kids know who that is. So it’s nice as a fan to finally have pop culture catch up with your sensibilities for one thing and once that happens, you can subvert the genre a lot more because everyone’s far more aware of what it is that you’re subverting. The fact that everyone’s seen a hundred super hero movies at this point makes it a lot easier to play with the conventions because people know what to expect when you do something different. They know that you’re subverting it, and yeah, it’s something that as a comic book fan, it’s nice that it’s reached a wide enough audience at this point that you can almost deal with it as though the whole world was these nerdy comic book fans. It’s just part of the culture now. Everyone knows that Deadpool was part of the Weapon X program. The fact that that’s common knowledge among kids these days is mind-blowing to me. If you had told me that when I was a kid, 'One day, every kid will know this shit,' like it’s crazy and it’s really exciting now to be able to use the fact that everyone has this knowledge and this expectation from these movies to do what it is that we want to do creatively."

Rogen said that The Green Hornet himself, Britt Reed, is not really a fan of comic books, but he's up on the latest comic book movies, much like the majority of today's moviegoing audience.

"In the movie, he’s not particularly nerdy or into comic books, but he’s like how everyone is now. He’s like the guy who would go see Wolverine and X-Men. We didn’t wanna make him a particularly large comic book fan, but I feel like today just by being the type of person who engages in pop culture, you are almost by default a comic book fan. The fact that Dark Knight’s one of the biggest movies ever means that everyone’s kind of a comic book fan now, and we didn’t feel a need to bring up [Steven Spielberg's] Amazing Stories or whatever. It felt inherent in kind of what the world is at this point basically. (Seth looks around) It’s funny when you walk into these sets, and here’s what I’ve concluded: Britt Reed’s a big fan of guitarists, but not vocalists. There’s a lot of Santana and Joe Satriani posters around this room."

The Green Hornet opens January 14, 2011!

I don't know...

I was really hating on the idea of Rogen in this role, but from his responses he seems to know what he's doing with this movie.

Every movie Seth has written or been in we all say the same thing "Another Rogan movie? Why?" then we see and it gets our love like Knocked Up or Superbad. Maybe we should stop lumping this guy in with the subpar crowd of writers/directors/actors and give him the benefit of doubt that maybe, just maybe, he can make a decent movie.

I agree Whathisname@!

Just maybe Rogen and the director have made
a decent movie here. It sure looks like it to me!
I really didn't like the idea of GH being a
comedy but there was comedic aspects to the show.
By the trailer it seemed to me that this didn't
actually completely suck like I thought it would.

Well I'm looking forward to it and I have faith in Rogen. I remember reading an interview ages ago about what he would be doing if he wasn't acting and he said he'd probably be working in a comic book store in Canada. So we know he's one of us it's now just a case of whether or not we agree with his interpretation of the character and the book.

It was called observe and 'report' and I loved it and I didn't mind funny people either.

Just the thought of Rogen anywhere near a comic franchise sickens me. No...wait...Rogen just sickens me, period. No matter what he's in. And him ruining a great character like the GH makes it that much worse. I guess it's a good thing that the Batman movies didn't follow the campy 60's show like Rogan is doing with the Green Hornet. Douchebag!

Based on the really bad trailers, the movie doesn't look like what a Green Hornet movie should be.

I was watching Funny People last night and Rogen had some pretty emotional scenes. Plus he's already done action in Pineapple Express(best movie ever).

I like Rogen, but this to me is still a rent, there are
better movies to see..or coming out..

I DO NOT like the fact that "everyone is a comic fan"

just becasue they saw the dark knight..that's NOT COOL!

just because you saw that movie, DOES NOT make you
a NERD or COMIC FAN!..It makes you a MOVIE FAN.

I wear my NERD badge with honor! and I can back up my knowledge with obscure comic references, and classic and current video games knowledge..Just cause you see
a "comic book movie" does not make you a COMIC FAN..It can start you out as one..but no.

I'm not surprised Rogen liking comics, when he was a kid comics were booming. Much like my oldest brother who's 31 used to really be into comic books, though not so much anymore he still enjoys the adaptations. You don't have to be a fan boy or a long time reader of comics to appreciate comic books.

I'm really looking forward to this movie.

@Destroyer: if it doesn't look like what you believe a Green Hornet movie SHOULD look like, then maybe Rogen has succeeded in his subversion?

Rogen has made this once great and iconic crime-fighting character into a alcohol-swilling party boy doofus. The trailer has definite moments of Rogen-esque gutterball "humor". This is Seth Rogen playing Seth Rogen again, the only difference is, he is wearing a green mask
