When there's a big villain reveal from the last issue, the anticipation for the next one is greater than ever. Especially with a blockbuster series like Justice League. In my past reviews, I've given high praise to the series. I consider it to be the definitive comic book series. A planet shattering story, good characters, and stellar art. Looking deeper into the series, I see that some of the character portrayals are more or less decent. Green Lantern has been nothing besides an idiotic fool, and Wonder Woman is just cardboard. Cyborg is definitely the most fleshed out of the group, since he's been having his own side-plot in the past four issues. Aquaman hasn't done much much, and Superman still hasn't lived up to his name. Batman seems to be the only one aware of the bigger picture. (As seen in this issue.) Besides all this, it has remained a very enjoyable series worth the $3.99 every time. Besides being a tad underwhelming, Issue 5 gives us what Issue 4 promised: A big confrontation.

The story continues with Flash and Superman trying evade Darkseid's Omega Beams. Green Lantern attempts to do some damage, but fails miserably from the power of Darkseid. All is not lost yet however. Naturally, Batman has a plan....

Now this is how the big villain should be done. I'll let you in on a little hint: they are no match for Darkseid, if this issue's any indication. It's good stuff. (Something bad happens to Hal in this issue, gotta say it was a guilty pleasure seeing what Darkseid did to him, pretty intense scene.) However, something was missing from this issue. Maybe it was cause three of the members did little to nothing. Or maybe it's the writing. Now it's getting a bit tiresome. It really isn't all that intelligent, and it makes most of members sound like amateurs. Or maybe it's cause somethings are forced and not fully fleshed out. (The Batman Green Lantern scene felt forced and rushed.)

Superman has some nice pieces of dialogue in this one. Of course he's knocked out pretty fast, it's like he'snot even one of the big guys of the group, let alone have the title 'Superman.' The Flash comes off as alright, just not special. Green Lantern once again is the most annoying character. His portrayal of being of an annoyance doesn't even make sense, it's like he wants to annoy everyone, including the reader. Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg are the three that do absolutely nothing. Though Wonder Woman's lines had me chuckling. Batman once again is the only real leader figure, showing that even though physically he's the weakest, he's strongest in spirit. Darkseid is pretty powerful, as he should be. Kudos for making him appear to be world-shattering. Though he barely got any lines, I want to see more dialogue with him in the nest issue.

The art is probably the best thing about the issue. Gorgeous, just gorgeous. It really makes the action feel cinematic. Definitely the best art I've ever seen in a comic. Everyone, everything, looks dynamic. It puts the current Avengers series to shame. The cover is pretty nice, showcasing everyone. (Minus Batman and Flash strangely.) Cyborg gets the center stage, holding the American Flag. He himself still doesn't fit well with the League, I think it's cause I'm so used to him being with the Teen Titans.

Overall, Justice League #5 was a bit underwhelming. The writing just isn't that great, when it could be much more smart. Some of the characters are there just to be there filling up the space. They better do something big in the next issue, cause it seems only Hal and Batman are getting fleshed out right now. However, it's still a blockbuster issue with some great action and stellar art.

8/10.

I have really enjoyed Justice League so far. Cyborg is a beast. This isn't my favorite of New 52 but a fun book none the less.

I have two problems.
1. for as great as Geoff Johns writes Lanterns, this is the absolute worst portrayal of Hal I've seen and he has some awful lines
2. Wonder Woman is mistreated badly and is given the cheesiest, most awful dialogue in the book

i will stick with it for the rest of the johns run though

The writing is getting a bit annoying now.

I hope that changes when the characters settle into their latest incarnations around #7

I'm sorry, I just don't like these reviews. "Green Lantern is annoying". I know you're trying to avoid spoilers, but can you really not articulate your thoughts by providing an example and then explaining why said example illustrates annoying behavior?

@BackwardGalaxy I've demonstrated in the past with examples. He's the comic relief part of the team, yet his comic relief comes off as annoying than 'relief.'

I'm an English teacher, and if I were to grade you on this review, you'd get a 'C'. I especially love the parts in which you criticize Geoff Johns' writing yet are unable to formulate your thoughts into much more than sweeping generalizations and single-adjective descriptors.

Please see me after class.

Cyborg was in this for a second, it should have been GL Batman and Flash taking the limelight on that cover. And two of them arent even on the cover.

I really like this issue, but mostly just for GL's fight with Darkseid. I like how we see GL's willpower in that he's getting destroyed but not giving up. But Aquaman hasn't done a thing yet and the Batman/Green Lantern scene felt really rushed. I'd give it the same score as you, its good but something big better start next issue.

I'm about to drop this book. I thought it was going to be like his run on the Teen Titans or the stuff he has done on Green Lantern but it seems like he's channeling his inner Michael Bay or something. Now Scott Snyder's Batman issue 5 was phenomenal! I highly urge everyone to check that one out.

I will say. I'm waiting for Cyborg to do something to make him relevant in this title.

Is it just me or does all of DC's new books seem awful short... Just seems something like Amazing Spider-man from Marvel is twice as long compared the new comics they offer....that said if you like action you will like this title.

And I think they are bringing the dynamics of them as a team VERY well. Great character development. Each issue is someone new. Nice to read JL and not have it solely about Supes. This one did a great job building Bats as someone that can reach the team. If you are a JL fan I think this is a must read.

@GODDAMNSUPERGUY---Wouldn't say GL is leader. Bats plan, he just executed it. And the way it ends I think you will be happy with next months issue.

It seems to me the characters in the book are acting like one would expect if they are suppose to be young and a little green. Anyone who has ever been on a team of anything knows that it is kind of a mess in the begining. It takes time for people to grow. We all think we know everything when we are young. Its not till later you find out other people are right sometimes to.

Sure, Batman would reveal his secret identity.

Poor dialogue, poor story. Darkseid turned into a brute. What could I hope from the guy who turned Starro into another humanoid universe conquerer?

I think Issue #5 is a classic setup issue. I think big things will happen in #6 especially with Batman trying to save Superman. I think issue #6 is when everyone will witness the true power and moral example of Supes, he will be unleashed and become the leader we all know he is destined to become.

@ SteveRogerSon

I agree with you totally worse still was one minute the league is standing in front of Darkseid then Gl attacks by himself gets thrashed then its just him and Batman who tells him to regroup with the others - what happened to them.

And isn't Trusting Batman adorable! Knowing that Green Lantern can't keep a secret, as seen earlier with the Flash, he just reveals himself and leaves his cape and cowl behind. I don't see how they would have hindered him in any way.

Green Lantern's response was also just dumb who talks like that? It should have just devolved into chaos

Batman: My Name is Bruce Wayne
GL: Who the hell is Bruce Wayne?
Batman: .....ummm Batman?!
GL: Who the hell is Batman?
Batman: Has anyone seen the rest of the League

This book and Teen titans... stuff just happens because it must forget logic

@SteveRogersSon In my opinion, the story itself is still solid, the action/scope is huge, and the art is stellar. But now the writing is getting to me, hence the 8/10 rating instead of the 9/10.
