Is Dick Tracy Heading Back To The Big Screen?

Warren Beatty has won his court battle and has officially gained back the rights to make another 'Dick Tracy' movie, or TV-show...

We all remember the 1990 film version of 'Dick Tracy', and there are very few people who disliked it. It was an amazing movie, and most of us were well aware of the legal dispute between Warren Beatty who played 'Dick Tracy', and the studio Tribune Media. The studio had originally told Beatty that he had until 2008 to make another Dick Tracy movie or tv show and Beatty responded my making a tv-special. Well that wasn't good enough for Tribune and they continued the court battle until now it's official, the rights stay with Warren Beatty giving him the right to make more movies or television shows based on the class comic-strip character.

And for those of you who aren't familiar with 'Dick Tracy' (Shame On You!), here's a brief description of the character.

Dick Tracy is a police detective who is recognized for his trademark yellow fedora and trench coat. He has many skills some of which stemmed from his previous occupations which include, commercial diver, G-Man, Naval Lt for Navy intelligence. He is one of the most determined detectives on the force, doing whatever it takes to solve the case. He carries a gun with which he is an amazing marksman, a wide variety of high-tech wrist watches including ones with two way radios and tv screens, and a built in computer. He used wire taps on phones before real police officers even used them. Dick Tracy has perhaps some of the strangest looking comic-villains in history including 3-D Magee, Blowtop, The Blank, Cueball, and Flattop Jones.

So what do you guys think, would you be up for seeing Dick Tracy return to the big screen? I think it would be amazing to see another Dick Tracy movie, it would definitely have to be set as a period piece though, it just wouldn't work as a modern day movie in my opinion. Do you guys think Beatty would reprise his role? Who do you think would make a good director? Personally I think this has Zack Snyder's style written all over it.

Dick Tracy was the perfect way to adapt pulp characters to the big screen. THAT'S how Green Hornet should have beenh handled.

haha Dick Tracy is actually one of my favorite CBM's. You know you've done something right when you can make a yellow trench coat look THAT badass

This is exactly what we need, another tried and true story that has already been done before. Who needs to be original when we have old content right in front of us. In fact, why don't we just ban original stories in Hollywood altogether. Wait!!! They already did that!

I loved the Dick Tracy movie. Al Pacino was classic in that.

Warren should just leave it as is. No remake.

Al Pacino's over the top (even for him) performance as Big Boy Caprice was classic. And this movie wasn't bad BUT it was too heavy on the camp,(ala Adam West Batman), for my taste. Although in retrospect I guess it couldn't be helped, being that the rogues gallery of Tracy villains are so stylized in their comic iterations. It WAS very true to the comics and with a few tweaks could have been awesome.

It also pushed the violins and melodrama button too much as well. I chalk that up to Beatty's fling with Madonna clouding his judgement on this one. As she played Breathless Mahoney in this while they were playing footsie in her trailer. (See Madonna's "Truth or Dare" which shot at the same time for Beatty's scene where he chastises her for the cameras following her everywhere in an early example of "reality tv, only an ironic movie version.)

The one thing that cracks me up in this movie is the actress playing Tess Trueheart,(Glenne Headly, who by no means is ugly), is portrayed as being hot, but in a plain, down to earth, girl next door, kind of way. She IS that decades Cate Blanchett. The current actress who is portrayed as being hot,(Robin Hood), but just isn't. Compare them and you can't miss the deja vu moment. It's almost scary creepy in the similarity.

Oh, by the way everyone, If my post offends anyone it is probably because I am a "massive troll" as Nephillim calls me. Sorry, I didn't mean to be such a big troll. Silly me,... I just thought I was posting my thoughts and opinions but somehow it got away from me.

Hey Ror that's an homage,... the money, the power, the women! I loved that comeback. At least you've got a set. Unlike Mc'lovin!

I can't imagine much of a sequel as 1) Beatty is getting too old now & 2) didn't like all of Tracy's good villians die in the 1st movie?

I did love the original movie though. I was there at the 1st showing where you had to buy & wear the "ticket tee shirt" to get in. Had that thing for years after. It was pretty cool.

Dick Tracy was perfect. The comic strip and books ARE campy. It was supposed to be that way. I admit it's not for everyone but if every CBM was a slugfest or a FX driven film, it wouldn't take long before they were boring. It's good to have nostagilia and good story telling flicks. I love crazy action too but a fine dramatic and smart film that stir emotions is good thing and it sticks in your memory forever. Dick Tracy is different from X-men but it's still a CBM. You must be a true believer to like this type of CBM. I'm a true believer. I'm willing to bet some of you so called fanboys don't even know what that is? or who even started the title ???

Wow. I'm sure I'm older than most of the people on this board, but I had no idea that anyone liked that movie. I saw it in high school, and it was one of those movies everyone talked about as being a terrible disappointment.

A few things I recall:
1. Beat for beat, it's almost the same story as Batman. (I remember a friend of mine, while we were watching it in the theater, whisper at one point, "This is crazy, if Dick Tracy jumps through a skylight [like Batman did], I'm leaving." And 5 minutes later...)
2. Al Pacino was the only good thing in the movie -- his dialogue was wonderful. It was as if someone else wrote his lines.
3. The high-contrast sets and costumes were more of a distraction than good for setting a mood which really didn't fit the tone of the story.
4. Madonna was behind it all? Really?! Yeesh.

@ MaddMonkk Chester Gould, much respect goes out to you. I agree with your comments. These young punks don't know the difference between a good CBM and their hand. Us old farts need to stick together. Oh, and "true believer" is from Stan Lee. I just reread your question and realised you were asking that. I thought you were asking who created Dick Tracy.
"Excelsior!"

Dick Tracey as a character has soooo much potential for a film darker and more edgier than Sin City. Film Noir elements work perfectly for it.
I do hope they dont do another over-the-top acting version of it coz unless ur Al Pacino u'll only look silly. Betty was plain annoying as Tracey. The only two decent acting performances in the 1st movie were Pacino and Madona. And the Danny Elfman score was a plus of course, but the rest was crap.
I want a remake... and I hope they get Pacino for it.

The movie was pretty good, for what it was. I could have done without Madonna being in the spotlight like she was. What really got me, was just the visual style. Kind of like Electra... a so-so movie, but it was cinematicly beautiful to watch.

New movie would be great but i would rather see a tv series!:)

Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman and James Caan all ruled in this movie!;)

i remember way back seen this on the vhs yes it was that old people the movie seemed cool plus it kind i think broke the mode for every iconic comic charcter 2 be on the big screen i think it's great that he won the case spo the question is wut now?

my pops read it to me as a kid so i was eager to see characrters like "flattop" and the wrist watch. It was in the newspaper in NewYork for a hell of a long time. It was removed almost two decades ago . idk if the present generation will appreciate it for what it is......damn , just realized where Inspector Gadget got his outfit from.

I never knew about any legal dispute. So that's why there was never a sequel. I also didn't know about any TV special. Well Warren's too old to play Dick now so they need someone new for the role.
