James Gunn On The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Footage Not In The Movie Or Blu-Ray

Noticed scenes from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy that were included in the various trailers, tv spots and other promotional material that didn't make it into the theatrical cut? Of course you did. However, some of that footage won't be on the blu-ray/dvd either.

Speaking to SHH to promote the blu-ray/dvd release of Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn shared the reasoning behind why certain footage previously featured in the marketing for Guardians of the Galaxy and not seen in the film won't make the home video release either.  Said Gunn, "...most of the stuff on the DVD are scenes that could have actually taken place in the movie. We didn’t put anything on the DVD that couldn’t have conceivably happened in the film....The conversation between Nebula and Gamora probably happened within the context of the movie… we just didn’t see it. Rocket and Groot [in the alternate introduction] that probably happened. All of the stuff in the [special features] probably happened, it just isn’t something that we saw in the movie.

But I will say that scene in particular — [Rhomann Dey's] light scene — was something that was a little too… comedy movie-ish to be put in the movie. And it wasn’t a matter of it undercutting the drama, it just seemed a little tonally inconsistent with the rest of the film."

Gunn also discusses The Celestial breifly glimpsed in the film and its relationship to the Infinity Gem it wielded.  Specially, Gunn stated that The Celestial "was supplementing it's power through the use of the Infinity Gem, it wasn't necessarily being powered by it.  "Yeah, [The Celestials are] very powerful. But then they were also supplementing their power with Infinity Stones."

The stark sarcasm of James Gunn was also on display in the interview as Gunn teased how Guardians of the Galaxy 2 opens.  "Yeah… we’re gonna start with the beheading of Rocket Raccoon. It’s gonna be a shocking, shocking beginning. And then shortly after that there’s going to be a Celestial that’s going to come and kill the rest of the Guardians. And then Benicio Del Toro is going to pick up the mantle as The Collector and he’s going to be the new Guardian of the Galaxy. [Laughs to demonstrate that he's kidding] We’ll have lots of surprises for people."

How comedy movie-ish was that scene? More than having a final battle culminate in a dance off?

Enjoyed the movie though. Might pick it up on blu-ray at some point.

@Jordanstine I bet that's not even a real scene, just a still with an explosion superimposed to mimic the cliche "looks calm while something explodes in the background" shot.

There were quite a few shots and voice-overs used in the trailers that weren't in the movie.

With all the goofyfest, corny humor and dancing number. Marvel Studios still manages to make this movie boring.

"I think Gunn said before that some of the dialogue were done just for promotional reasons."

He certainly has.

@LubedUp
I imagine they shot Drax as part of the line-up to use it trailers, TV spots, promotional material. It's a lot better to introduce the five Guardians in promo material all together, rather than four together and one off in another random spot.

Gunn is such a fanboy filmmaker. He worries about the continuity of his cut scenes.

I really loved the dance scene, it was clever and funny and it did serve a purpose, it was to distract Ronan from Rocket to build or re assemble the weapon to destroy Ronans hammer and exposing the Infinity Stone.

Guardians of the Galaxy for me is the best movie that Marvel Studios has done.

Surprised that no once complained that Ronan was killed by The Guardians even though he did'nt have the Infinity Stone, but hey whatever let's just hate on another hero who killed the villain.

@MightyZeus haha. I agree with you almost 100%. Almost because I'm torn between GotG and Winter Solder as my favorite.

I do agree with you 100% on heroes killing. When I read thru comments on here, this quote pops in my head on the reg...

I think the fact the trolls on here are only able to ever single out the 'dance off' as a flaw proves just how great the movie is - and even then they blow that one scene out of proportion.

Great scene and great movie.

The movie really doesn't hold up to a second viewing, they should have added those scenes back in.
