Bob Iger Reaffirms STAR WARS Episode VIII And IX Release Dates

According to The Wrap [via Get Your Geek On], Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed to Disney investors that Star Wars: Episode VII will arrive in 2017 and Episode IX will arrive in 2019.  Currently, Rian Johnson (Looper) is attached to direct.  J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.  Here's what Iger shared with Disney stockholders in a written statement:

“As one of the few people allowed to visit the set during filming… and one of the fewer who’s seen most of the footage… I can assure the millions of ‘Star Wars’ fans who have spent the last decade hoping for a new movie this one will be worth the wait. And it’s only the beginning of a new era of exceptional ‘Star Wars’ storytelling; next year we’ll release our first standalone movie based on these characters, followed by ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ in 2017, and we’ll finish this trilogy with ‘Episode IX’ in 2019."

I was under the impression that they were going to be three years apart with two spin-offs released between each episode. So how long until they officially announce Episodes 10, 11, and 12?

I'd like a ninja martial arts Star Wars spinoff, with Jackie Chan of course. Seriously though, a story more personal and less explorative, maybe taking place on one of the fictional cities could really bring some depth and detail to these huge worlds where we're really only been introduced to at the 'texture everything basic' cgi level.

Interesting that they only want it to be a trilogy, obviously they have plans beyond 2019 but it's highly likely those plans will continue the universe without the original cast of characters, perhaps something like:

1977-2019 - Episode 1-9 of The Skywalker series
2021-??? - Episode 1-? of The ??? series
