COMICS: You'll Never Guess Joker's New Controversial Origin

Scott Snyder crafted an exciting new origin for Batman in Zero Year and now the talented DC Comics writer is tackling an origin story for The Dark Knight's greatest adversary, the Joker.

What do Vandal Savage, Ra's Al Ghul and the Joker have in common? A lot more than past DC Comics history would have you believe.   According to Batman #38, Vandal Savage acquired his immortality from the radiation of a mysterious meteorite that fell to Earth in the prehistoric era.  Ra's Al Ghul apparently bathes in a "corrupted version" of the chemical/radiation.  And the Joker, as told in Snyder's Batman #38 also encountered the meteorite before Gotham was ever born.  That's right, the Joker is immortal.  It's a clever retcon to explain how the Joker bounces back time after time from all the punishment Batman dishes out. As explained in Batman #38, the chemical only activates in the Joker at moments of extreme physical injury, otherwise the chemical is undetectable.

And this origin for the Joker goes all the way back to "Death of the Family" according to Snyder. Speaking to IGN, he stated, "For me, I wanted to make something that felt real and was believable, while at the same time was mythologically big and epic, the way the story is, so that it is material that might have been here and might have done this to Vandal Savage and might be the basis for the Lazarus Pit, or Electrum -- which is what keeps the Owls coming back from the dead, the Talons. It might have something to do with other figures as well, for Solomon Grundy... I wanted to create something that links all that. So the Joker says, "I knew this. I knew this part of it. I'm older than Gotham. I'm the Pale Man that walks these shores, and I've seen all of it. I'm the immortal person here. You are nothing. I let you believe it for a little while because I wanted you to come with me and become something important, but you had your chance in Death of the Family, and you threw me off a goddamn cliff. So... you're done."

What do you think of Joker's new origin? Do you think it will last? Or will someone come along after Snyder and retcon his work? Sound of below in the comment section!

Joker works best when his background is mysterious except for a couple of things like his Red Hood identity and the chemical bath.

It's not Joker's new origin.

Are we really going to trust Crazy Quilt in what Joker's new origin is?

Joker's a master of deception. He's just [frick]ing with Batman.

I really wish they would stop spelling out every single aspect of popular characters' histories. I felt Wolverine was interesting in the comics before they gave us every tiny detail about his personal history. Also, the Joker in the Dark Knight movie was fascinating to me for similar reasons. When there is mystery, i feel it engages the audience. Villains especially benefit from this. The Aliens and Predators were more terrifying before we knew everything about them. The more we understand a villain (or anything we fear, for that matter), the less threatening it is. Usually.

Apparently CBM doesn't allow two letter posts.

Let me expand on it.

"Utter BS."

And now is about the time I cancel my subscription to this Batman series. Bat-books in general have been sub-par since the launch of The New 52. Dick Grayson "died" and how that impacts the character isn't discussed in a single Bat-Book. DC is really shitting the bed in terms of creating the sense of a unified world in their comics.

i kinda... like it.

i can see it fitting with him.

noone knows his origin, even he doesnt remember anymore, so he just makes up things.
also living forever will just make him even more mad, and cynical. its like an endless loop of horror.

i can dig it.
awwwww yeahhh.

[frick] that shit Snyder don't jump the shark with crap like that. Joker being immortal that isn't interesting why don't they just skip this and make him some ancient agent of chaos like Shazam and Dr. Fate are guardians of order if he wants to do stupid shit like that.

I actually like this idea, a lot. The Joker has always felt more like an evil, mythological force of nature, not some street criminal. This origin fits with that theme IMO.

GUYS, ARE YOU SERIOUSLY GOING TO TRUST THE CRAZY QUILT IN WHAT JOKER'S NEW ORIGIN IS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

HAVE YOU NEVER READ A JOKER COMIC?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

He's clearly [frick]ing with Batman's mind.

My theory is Joker has regenerative superpowers thanks to that chemical bath he took.

Hell if Peter can get spider powers from a radioactive spider, Flash because super fast thanks to a lightening shock and falling on chemicals, and Daredevil getting heighten senses thanks to chemicals, then it could work with Joker.

Makes sense with how many times Joker has died and come back to life.
