Joel Kinnaman On The Appeal Of Playing Rick Flag In David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD

A lesser-known comic book character has its appeal. "When you’re doing the first movie in a comic book, you always have the leeway of you’re going to move it from a comic book to a film and put it in real life – you’re always going to make a lot of changes and create a new universe."

Earlier today, Joel Kinnaman only shared one sentence about his role as Rick Flag in director David Ayers' Suicide Squad.  However, in a new interview with Uproxx, Kinnaman goes into detail about the benefits of playing a comic book character that fans may not necessarily be overly familiar with.  Said the RoboCop actor, "You want the backstory of the character, but I think this is also a universe that David Ayer is going to create – there’s a lot more. Also, when you’re doing the first movie in a comic book, you always have the leeway of you’re going to move it from a comic book to a film and put it in real life – you’re always going to make a lot of changes and create a new universe. So you’re kind of setting a precedent. When you’re remaking a movie that’s already been made and a character that was made for the film, then it becomes a different thing and it’s more difficult to create something new without offending some people."

Suicide Squad
arrives in US theaters on August 05, 2016.

Unless you're Marvel Studios. Everything Marvel Studios does is perfect and look just like the comics. No one dare say otherwise or may God have mercy on their souls.

"Regarding who could end up portraying the supervillain, Joe Manganiello is supposedly the top contender with Jason Clark also under consideration. Apparently Wilson will be a 'hired assassin that is competing with the Suicide Squad,' as opposed to a bodyguard or a member of the titular supervillain team."

haha, I'd just copy&pasted this interview on the other Kinnaman post.

Here's the rest of comments:
You mention being aware of what the fans want, how does that play into what you want to do with Rick Flag in Suicide Squad? He’s not a super known character, so maybe you don’t have to worry about that as much and you can really own it.

Yeah, for sure. And you want the backstory of the character, but I think this is also a universe that David Ayer is going to create – there’s a lot more. Also, when you’re doing the first movie in a comic book, you always have the leeway of you’re going to move it from a comic book to a film and put it in real life – you’re always going to make a lot of changes and create a new universe. So you’re kind of setting a precedent. When you’re remaking a movie that’s already been made and a character that was made for the film, then it becomes a different thing and it’s more difficult to create something new without offending some people.

Were you familiar with the character of Rick Flag before this came up?

No.

I know hardcore comic book fans who don’t know him that well.

I reached out to my guys, like Daniel Espinosa, who did Child 44 and Safe House and Easy Money. He’s a comic book authority; he’s read every Marvel comic since 1982. When he’s with Marvel people, he’s like, “No, that character had his golden age between 1984 and 1986 when so and so wrote that arc.” And even he wasn’t completely sure.

Maybe because he was too busy reading Marvel instead of DC.

Yeah, he’s more a Marvel guy, but he knows the DC stuff, too.

If nothing else, at least you didn’t have to get your hair cut on social media in front of the world.

[Laughs] Exactly.

I think he's solid actor so am definitely happy on this casting, but he didn't really remake the wheel with his RoboCop, so I admit to being a little hesitant in that sense... Anyway, anyone else think Kinnaman comes off as really high whenever he's interviewed?

also since Gyllenhaal is out of Suicide Squad, grab him by his hand DC and put him in a Batman movie. As a villain or friend. Doesn't mather.

Also ... Marvel. Get your shit together and let him play older Peter Parker.

Can Joe Manganiello be Shazaam instead??

Partly, because he'd size up well next to the Rock, but mostly because I want Gerard Butler or Denzel to be Deathstroke. hahaha

Jake couldn't do it because they will film in April and in March he'll be doing a ton of performances for a play on Broadway.

But if there is one person Jake should be, it's Hal Jordan.

@HeavensWarrior - "Tom hardy turned down the role because rick flag will indeed die in the movie, plus DC can always cast tom for another DC role, maybe another villin"

That's a rumor.

Hardy backed out because of scheduling conflicts. The same reason Gyllenhaal couldn't accept the role. I think it will work out for the best because both Hardy and Gyllenhaal are better suited for leading roles or characters that would get solo films. Even if Rick Flag doesn't die in Suicide Squad, he'd never get a solo movie, ya know?

because he's the one of very few actors working today that can totally disappear in a role and become the total version of a character his playing. Imagine if he would play Batman villain.
