COMICS: Marvel's SECRET WARS Expands To Nine Issues

Marvel's Secret Wars, a company-wide crossover event, is expanding to 9 issues! Are you excited that Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic are expanding their stay in Battleworld? Does an extra issue delay the start of the All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe?

Marvel's Secret Wars was originally slated for an eight issue run the crossover event is expanding to nine issues.  Touching on the additional issue, Axel Alonso stated, "Apparently, Secret Wars is even bigger than we thought it was.   To help Jonathan and Esad conclude this epic event as big and bombastically as it started, we are adding an extra issue.  That means one more month of the suspense, action and game-changing storytelling that fans and retailers have been clamoring for since the final incursion started."

But will the extra issue, delay the launch of All-New, All-Different Marvel?  Marvel SVP of Sales & Marketing David Gabriel stated, "This extra issue will not affect any of the new launches as part of All-New, All-Different Marvel.  But there might be a surprise or two left over from Battleworld you weren’t expecting. In fact, like the original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, some of those puzzle pieces will hit the Marvel Universe before the event concludes. But if you want to see how they all fit together, you don’t want to miss these last few issues."

Secret Wars #9 will be written by Jonathan Hickan, with art from Esad Ribic and a cover from Alex Ross.  Going by the cover, Mister Fantastic is taking off the lab coat and will be looking to put a cosmic-level beatdown on Doctor Doom.

This is dragging out way too far, and it's not entertaining. I might pick up some satellite issues that look fun, but I'm not sure I can read any more of this main title.

I stopped buying the comics after Avengers Vs Xmen and Thor Vs Galactus.
Haven't seen any that tickle my fancy yet.

I bought AvX and thought it started strong, then it just plummeted to mediocre..... Then I decided to buy Secret Wars and so far its garbage. But now they've expanded it??

Ugh Marvel what is happening to you?? House of Ideas has run out of ideas and even ruin what they have already done.
How are you beating DC in sales of books?

Cool, I like this event, not all the titles but quite a few.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how Thor sales have been since they gender-swapped him. I was kind of hoping sales would plummet so they'd get the message that pandering PC "diversity" doesn't work. Look to DC to see how it's done.

Might as well expand it by another issue since this event is critically acclaimed.

This series comes across as moderately disjointed. Some of the ideas are nifty [Future Imperfect], but for the most part the satellite issues come across as just a big "What If...?" story. Feels like a vanity project.

Dear Marvel. You've got decades of story-lines and character development already in play. Are you seriously telling us that you're out of good ideas for that incredible WEALTH of material you've got?

This Secret Wars has nothing on the original.

C- at best.

So basically anything these companies do to recognize different ethnicities, genders, and sexualities is immediate pandering? So when is diversity not pandering then? And if it's about how they're promoting their DCYOU well crud they have to advertise their mini-relaunch SOMEHOW. I'm tired of this "pandering" nonsense when it's really just publishers recognizing OTHER HUMAN BEINGS EXIST. Christ Almighty.

I've hated everything Avengers since Hickman took over. His plots make only the barest sense. Remender too. I'm no fan of this new crop of writers. I haven't read a good Avengers book since 2013.

@TheBreadHood

When it' not pandering? When they make a new character to fill some imagined quota system. Kinda like when they CREATED Black Panther when they wanted the first black hero. When Marvel wanted a horse faced alien Thor, they created a new character; Beta Ray Bill. Instead of making a Thor-like female character, with her own identity, hammer and NAME, they instead changed everything about the character, and called it "progress".

When they wanted a gay character, they gave it to Northstar. He hadn't had enough of an establishment for it to fundamentally change the character; it just added to it. That is NOT pandering.

@dio THE beyonder, from the original series, no. Instead, it has been revealed that that beyonder was a baby from a race of Beyonders, who created the multiverse itself

@dio

The Beyonder's race led up to it, but so far not apart of the actual event that I've seen.

What a load of CRAP-
Secret Wars was crap when it was started in the 90s and it's ten times worse now.
How can a company so absolutely rich in characters and history constantly and repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot?? It is a total amazement to me!!
Marvel's movie division is so totally good at what they do the comic division must be a total embarrassment to them.
Marvel died in the early nineties. All I see now is a rotting, festering corpse. That must be it. That is the only explanation.

I find it interesting how people would sit here and talk about Marvel. Just say you don’t care for the Secret Wars and leave at that. Personally as person who has been reading comics for over 40 years now. You can still make mine Marvel. I’m not going to jump on a band wagon about how bad DC is, but DC doesn’t know what they want to do. They just reset their universe less than 5 years ago and are now in the process of resetting again. Let’s shake up the status quo. Bring in some new blood and direction to universe and still keep all our history intact… personally I like it.

I'm really enjoying this event... but Weirdworld is the best thing that's come out of this so far. [frick]ing epic. Hopefully it continues on in a new series.

So... a top tier comics sells about 20K print units if lucky? Or am I reading this wrong? I guess I wasn't the only one who left the industry in the last few years. That sucks.

I wouldn't mind if they expanded this thing to 13 issues. I am digging this.
But, yeah, the main series is quite expository and it feels like it's just getting started al the time, even though it's halfway through already. I was actually just thinking they should extend this a bit, after reading the last issue.
There's so much world-building and it's really, really good world-building, but not much actual plot structure. The two major deaths we got recently were quite impactful. Despite 99.999% of characters already being killed off in the very first issue.

I guess now it's like the Star Wars Saga.

Can't believe some people are down on this.
History is happening, people. Wake up. This is not the time to have your mind set to automatic hater. Turn off the hate-control, already. Switch back to manual.
Pick up Weirdworld.
Pick up Thors.
Get X-Men '92 on Comixology.
There is so much fun to be had, right now.
This is THE greatest comics event ever.
This actually lives up to the legendary status of the original.
There's a fvckload of awesome in the "Satellites". Some are a bit shit, but even they are worth reading.

Marvel are doing nothing wrong. They are celebrating the full richness of their characters and history and wealth of storylines.

This is Apex stuff.

But most of all, it is fun.
rabid
rabid - 8/27/2015, 4:33 AM
There's nothing wrong with Marvel celebrating the richness of their characters. There is something wrong with employing writers who can't properly construct a story. Sure, books like Weirdworld and Old Man Logan look great. But the stories themselves are an incoherent mess. It's nearly impossible to understand what happened over the last two years of FF, X-Men, and Avengers. It's like listening to a rambling stutterer trying to tell a story that you know would otherwise be interesting if anyone else were telling it.

@LEOSTRATOR:

Yeesh. Although in fairness, the MCU has quite a bit to do with pushing titles, I bet.

@DukeAcureds:

It's a good event, as I've said multiple times. But, let's not get carried away. It's not the greatest event ever to happen in the history of ever. It's just good... and there's nothing close to a consensus on that, even.
Tevii
Tevii - 8/27/2015, 8:25 AM
TheBreadHood - its not pandering when they create new and original characters of varying ethnicities. It IS pandering (and racist) when all they do is replace existing white characters.
Its a sad trend that future generations will look back on as racist crap. Women and all ethnicities deserve their own new characters. Not hand-me-downs.
This current "answer" should insult everyone. It shows that white males are nothing but expendable and it shows that other ethnicities don't deserve their own characters that they can claim as theirs from day one.
Mile Morales Spiderman will NEVER be Spiderman. He will ALWAYS be Miles Morales Spiderman... SO WHY NOT give him an original name and an original identity so EVERYONE is happy. WHY does it have to be one way or the other.
They choose to answer the problem of lack of diversity with MORE racism. its pathetic

@Tevii

the only thing wrong with your response, is that it was more eloquent than mine.

Perfectly stated.
