DC Entertainment Boss Committed To Keeping Films And TV Separate

DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson says the films and TV shows spinning out at Warner Bros., The CW and CBS will remain separate properties. Would you ever want Arrow, The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow to reference Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?

If you were hoping that Grant Gustin's season-finale venture into the multiverse opened the door for the DC's film slate to mix with its television shows, think again.  Speaking to Variety, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson confirmed that the films and TV shows will remain separate entities.  “We’re so talent driven.  [The focus on a single universe of characters with connected storylines] could end up handcuffing our creators into trying to work with the same storyline or force them to hold back characters or introduce certain characters. Ultimately it hinders the ability for someone like (showrunner) Bruno Heller to come in and create ‘Gotham.’ "

Nelson noted that the shared universe strategy has worked "beautifully" for Marvel but it doesn't make sense for WB with all of the irons it has in the fire.

Do you agree? Gotham is obviously a hard show to connect to the others but Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl could all become connected to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and the rest of the other films coming down the pipeline.  The easy method, would be to use the multiverse, which was introduced on The Flash.  Then again, the tone, material and costumes on the TV shows are of another quality than what WB is poised to unleash this March with Dawn of Justice.

Good because DC T.V is shit.

If they aren't going to be connected, then please remove the restrictions on the shows when it comes to using certain characters. We should be able to have Green Lantern on Arrow or Flash if the show-runners wanted to.

Way it looks the plans for the movies seem to be handcuffing certain TV creators quite a bit all the same...

@DarthBastard Lol! Tell us what you really think.

I used to think it should all be connected, but now not so much, but it would be cool to see BvS glimpses when the Flash runs through timestreams like in the finale.

they should be two universes is ok with me. now the problem is when they start create too many dc tv universes without them being connected. for example, gotham, supergirl, teen titans, cw universe.

Gotham was good for the first few episodes, but it just doesn't feel like I'm watching something with Batman roots anymore. They just add in those elements as an afterthought.

Good. Let the movies and shows do their own thing

The last thing we need is people complaining about why Superman didn't show up every time a city is under attack.

The DCTV shows weren't created with a bigger DCEU in mind, so this makes perfect sense. Besides, tonally they're totally different.

With a different, Suicide Squad and Waller, of course they can't be in the same universe.

And Arrow beat Ra's ghul, of course they won't connect to the movies even if it was a multiverse.

Not really surprising since they are doing the same in the comics:

so seperate universes for tv shows and movies is limiting?

kind of like Arrow no longer being able to use Suicide Squad?
or Supergirl not being able to show Superman's face?
Or that Flash will end up being castrated and cancelled before the movie drops?

He says it's limiting, but what he means is they just can't pull off a vast interconnected universe spanning broadcast, streaming, theatrical and home release.

What makes me even more engaged in Marvel Tv shows is the fact they are connected and you can see the effects of of everything ripple across the shows and movies.

I never thought the whole connected things would be such an influence in why I watch Marvel tv shows, but it is.

DC is leaving money on the table by not doing this.

Diane Nelson is an idiot. The ONLY thing holding back the potential and creative force of DC comics is Warner Bros themselves, their narrow view and their over-reliance on Batman

For better or worse, i prefer the Marvel way with TV shows and movies sharing the same universe. It limits possibiliies but also expand stories.

That said, no system is superior to the other.

What i don't get though is why would DC in its multiverse system limit its options by restraining some characters from appeaing in one format (usually TV) and preserve them exclusively for the other (big screen) ?

This limitation doesn't make sense to me when you have a multiverse.

I really like Gustin's Flash. I don't know who this twerp they've hired to be the movie Flash is, but he's got big boots to fill.

That's fine just so long as you aren't pulling away from the shows just because the movies are doing it. Example, just because Harley Quinn will appear in SS doesn't mean she can't be on Arrow. Its very counter intuitive. You separate the movies and TV precisely so you don't have to do that.

Good. Maybe if 95% of the television shows about DC comic books characters weren't such garbage, I'd actually care.
LEVITIKUZ

I'm fine with this because Arrow is shit and I don't want that connected to the DCCU.

Only DC I would want in the DCCU is the Flash but still no other show.

I'd love to see some of the tv characters on the big screen, but I see their point about unnecessarily having to blend storylines and such. Mainly it would be great to see what some of the tv characters would look like with a true budget. That being said, as one other poster mentioned, let the tv shows have carte blanche abilities with ALL the characters then since there is no intermingling of the two universes.

Why are we still discussing this? Anyone with half a brain knew CW's crappy production was not getting anywhere near the DCEU.
