George Miller Declined Warner Bros. Offer To Direct AKIRA Movie

It seems one apocalyptic future is enough for Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller. He will not be directing Akira for Warner Bros. "There was talk of it, but I've got so many things on my dance card, I don't have the time to do everything." But did Akira influence Fury Road?

Speaking to Yahoo, director George Miller confirmed that Warner Bros. did gauge the Mad Max: Fury Road helmer's interest in Akira but he' simply too busy.  "There was talk of it, but I've got so many things on my dance card, I don't have the time to do everything. "  But was Miller's disinterest in Akira partly due to the fact that Fury Road was inspired by it?  More than one anime fan has pointed out the similarities between the two films.  "I don't know where that came from. I'm a huge fan of anime and the precision of that and to some degree Manga, even though I don't read Japanese, but just the aesthetic of it. So Akira might have been one of the many movies but it certainly wasn't one that directly influenced Mad Max."

After numerous starts and stops, the live-action Akira film is back on at WB with Marco Ramirez (Daredevil, Sons of Anarchy) writing the script.  There's currently no cast or director attached to the project.

Good. Focus on making great Mad Max films like Fury Road.

Magnas have been and always will be turned into shitty movies.

Lose George Miller and possibly gain Christopher Nolan? I'm happy they're trying to get some serious talent to make this film.

I think it's possible this is the untitled Nolan project. That'd be pretty neat. Even though his last two films were just "good" with bits of brilliance I am still excited to see what he does next.

Not too interested in an Americaized AKIRA.
If I were a billionaire producer, I'd seal a partnership between WB and a Japanese studio, to bring this story to cinemas as faithfully as possible. Also, you need to involve Otomo, obviously.

Good! We don't need anyone trying to adapt Akira. It will fail no matter what. Nolan better stay away from this too.

Speaking of manga adaptations, Cameron needs to stop [frick]ing around with Avatar sequels and start making Battle Angel.

If this movie ever gets made I hope the whole thing is filmed in Japan and they use Japanese actors. For some reason I think Joseph Kosinski could do a good job on this movie. But I personally want to see Carl Erik Rinsch get the job.
