Jonathan Herman has been brought in to do an overhaul of the DreamWorks sci-fi film.  Reported plot elements of the anime adaptation center on Johansoon's lead special-ops cyborg who leads the covert Section 9 taskforce against a criminal terrorist cell lead by The Laughing Man.  Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is currently attached to direct.  The film is currently scheduled for release on March 31, 2017.

William Wheeler (Ray Donovan) and Jamie Moss (Street Kings) wrote previous drafts of Ghost in the Shell.

@BlackStar25 true true but Ghost In the Shell is a long running Manga and series that's distinguished by its Japanese culture and characters. The city of Tokyo, is like a character. All You Need Is Kill was a popular Manga but the Japanese aspects weren't significant. Also, it wasn't as beloved and well known as GITS. The alien and the time travel aspects were the strong points. While Ghost in the shells' technology and cyberpunk centered premise is the core of the show, the Far East ideology is just as strong. Asian actors and culture deserve a time to shine in their own creation. DreamWorks could be using this film to help provide opportunities for Asian-American actors in a market with few opportunities for them to shine. Patterns of Asian erasure are waaaaay too prevalent. By casting a white American actress, this film is whitewashing a character who is clearly meant to be Asian in a story that takes place in Japan and is populated by Japanese characters. This not only disrespects the original source but perpetuates Hollywood's racist habit of ignoring people of color in order to promote white movie stars.

You don't have to be Asian to portray an Asian, this is progress folks. LOL.

If Scarlett Johansson wasn't a part of the film I'd be more excited. It's not because she's white but because her acting is about as flat and wooden as Gusto's wife.

People have an issue with Scarlet....

You do realize this film is directed but the guy who directed Snow White and the Huntsman who boned Kristen Stewart while they were filming and is being produced by AVI. [frick]ING. ARAD.

This movie was doomed to fail before Scarlet joined. In fact Scarlet's the best thing going for this film.

@ComicsBornAndBred @Nomis

Just because it is done by an japanse company does not mean that and adaption of it needs to be a japanese cast. It all depends on the timeperiod, place it take's place in and so forth.

Naruto adaption - Japanse cast needed
All you need is kill (Which is Edge of Tomorrow is based on) - More neutral.
Fullmetal Alchemeist Brotherhood - Should have a european cast if ever made
Attack on Titans - A mixture since it is sett in a european setting with diffrent kinds of people.

I dislike Anime and Manga. I will watch this simply for the fact that Scarlett Johansson is an incredible actress and a great action star.

The only two Anime or Manga or whatever the hell they are that I care about are Dragonball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh. And they don't need live action.

The Anime was great, They should hire Ridley Scott or Spielberg to direct this one.

@MexicanSuperman

Yes i know that. But if you want to do an adaptation of Naruto, and so it can work in terms of live action, do to the suroundings there is, it should be better of with a Jap only cast. One of the biggest complains about 47 Ronin (that asian movie with Keanu Reaves) of just Keanu Reeves being in the movie since it was placed in acient China.

In some causes, yes you are right (All you need is kill). But there are some exceptions that is in need of an specific cast (Naruto for example).

It all depends on the enviroment, timeperiod country and so forth.

Something all those films have in common...

Avi Arad produced them all.

@MercwithMouth

Avi left Marvel Studios in 06. Doubt he had that much input on TIH and Iron Man.

Avi let Raimi pretty much do what he wanted in SM1 and SM2. In SM3 he forced Raimi to use Venom.

Blade 1 was average and Blade 2 was good because of del Toro and Mike Mignola.

X-Men films? Pass.

Avi is [frick]ing cancer to everything he gets a say in. He's nothing but a toy guy who somehow got to be in the movie biz.
