CREED Director Ryan Coogler On Whether BLACK PANTHER's Director Should Be Black

Warner Bros. has a woman directing Wonder Woman. Likewise, Marvel is reportedly targeting a female director for Captain Marvel. Continuing along those lines,it looks like Marvel is targeting an African-American to direct Black Panther. But should they?

At first glance, it certainly appears that Marvel is targeting a black director to helm their Black Panther movie.  First, the offer went out to Ava DuVernay, then F. Gary Gray and Ryan Coogler entered the mix.  All of these directors are African-American which would indicate that Marvel considers race an important component of their search for a director.  But what do the actual director think about the question of whether the Black Panther movie needs to have a black director.  Falcon actor Anthony Mackie has already gone on record, stating that he doesn't believe the film needs a black director.  "I don’t think it’s important at all.  As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!  The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man — or woman — win."

Weighing in on this question is director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) who is currently out promoting Creed, starring Michael B. Jordan.  Said Coogler on whether it's important to have a black director, "Yeah, I think it’s important. Perspective is so important in art. It’s an important thing. That’s not to say that you can’t work outside yourself. When I was coming up, I made movies about things that were close to me; I made movies about things that weren’t close to me. But I definitely think that it helps when you are close to a subject. Like, I was an athlete for most of my life before I was a filmmaker. And that helped to inform me when writing this script, when directing. Having had those types of experiences helped me inform this process.  A lot of times with great movies, you find some part of the filmmaker’s life informing what they were doing. You look at Marty’s [Scorsese] great movies. It’s like, man, you look at Mean Streets, that was his life. That was what he was dealing with. That was what he was coming up with.  If someone said, “What’s Marty Scorsese’s greatest movies,” they’re going to generally be about the Italian American experience. People are going to throw out Goodfellas, they gonna throw out Mean Streets because it was something that was close to him. That’s not say that Departed isn’t a great movie. But the proximity…you could feel the director’s proximity to a movie like Goodfellas a little better because he grew up in that neighborhood. He grew up in Little Italy. That was his world.  So I think that there is a potential for a greater truth when a filmmaker comes from a particular culture that they’re dealing with. That’s not to say that a filmmaker can’t work outside his or her cultural space. But I do believe that the opportunity for the film to have more nuance will come when you looking at filmmakers that bring a little bit of that from their personal experience."

It's interesting that both McKie and Coogler cite perspective and the ability to relate to the story as important attributes for a director on a particular film.  However, Coogler says race on certain films can help a director if they're intimately familiar with the themes and tone of what the film is trying to convey.  McKie is implying that the ability to relate to a story has nothing to do with race or gender - you either relate to the story or you don't.  While both sides of the argument have their defenders and detractors, it's probably safe to say that at the end of the day, everyone just wants a good Black Panther movie.

I want Coogler to direct the Cyborg movie. He's my top choice, especially with his background in sports, and how he handles family dynamics on screen, he would be a perfect fit

But, it sounds like he'll be busy with other projects

I do see both sides of the coin. On one hand, as long as the director can effectively tell the story, It shouldnt matter what race they are. And on the other hand, its easier for a director to direct a movie that he can relate to and has substantial experiences with pertaining to the characters and subject matter.

"they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!"

Wow. I'm glad I dismissed the advanced screening pass for Creed. That's [frick]ing insulting.

@NeoBaggins

Anthony Mackie said that. I'm never seeing the sequel to Pain & Gain.

@neobaggins

Anthony mackie said that though, what does creed have to do with it.

anyway, I agree with what Coogler said tbh.
It's not a requirement, but it definitely helps and could possibly make a better movie

Getting an AFRICAN director to direct the AFRICAN character would be nice

But just randomly seeking out any black director as if all black people go back to Africa every sunday is so tone deaf by Feige and his cronies

I agree 100% with Coogler. I always read people saying "It doesnt matter who directs something or who acts in something or who does anything" but it's so funny how that only comes up when someone is suggesting a non-white person can do something. Why that never comes up in support of deviating from the white male default is pretty obvious.

You don't NEED an African director, but why not have one?

Saw Creed 2 days ago, such a great movie, it's very emotional and resemble a lot to the first Rocky, the acting is top notch and I would not be surprised if Sly gets a nomination as best supporting actor.

@WakandasSoul

That's not what they said and you know it. Stop trying to start a fight where there isn't one. People can have a different opinion than your's. ie. That anyone should be able to direct the movie, not just people with a certain skin color.

I just don't understand what people have against the idea of "merit". Why can't the director with the best vision get the job? Nobody was campaigning against Joe Johnston to not direct the first Cap movie because he wasn't from Brooklyn. How does being black help you identify or do a better job with a character who lives on a different continent and in a completely fictitious culture and society? That would be like saying "only an alien can direct a guardians of the galaxy movie!" You can't identify with who these characters are, because you can't be from Wakanda. Marvel saying "Only an African American can direct Black Panther." is literally racism and it's also illegal as we have federal laws against not hiring individuals because of their skin color or the way they look. Mackie gets it, what's so difficult about not being racist about a movie's hiring process?

Nothing new here...They do the same thing with female characters too. (WW and Captain Marvel most likely) I'd bet they'll do the same with Cyborg too possibly.

I understand his point, but at the end of the day, the one who will make the best movie is the best director possible with a GREAT script.

It doesnt matter if the director is black, mixed or white, if he doesnt have real talent, experience, AND the script isnt solid enough, the movie wont be great

I wish Ava DuVernay would have just did it and been dome with it.

Eh, whatever. Back to JJ. I have three episodes left. Might have to watch them all over again. I just been staring at her ass the whole time.

I'm gonna go with Mackie on this one. I think they should get the best director, regardless of race or gender.

When Steven Spielberg directed "The Color Purple", he created a cinematic classic. It would have been a shame if someone had said, "Sorry Steven, but you can't direct this cause your not black."

As far as the Scorsese reference, his neighbor hood was real, hence the perspective. Wakanda is fictional. So unless there is someone who actually grew up in a secret isolationist African nation with advanced weaponry, I don't know if it's really the same thing, lol.

JuST DO IT!

Coogler would fit PERFECT with BP. Perspective us important when directing a film that's themes may involve race, creed (no pun intended) and culture. Coogler def understands that. He's someone who's not only knowledgeable about african American culture, but African as well. He's often spoke on the importance of recognizing the origins of black folks. I like that. He handles the exploration and plight of a culture so well.

He's obviously drawn to work that's centered in black culture. Black Panther is just that. An African director would be great, butyou can't igor Coogler's talent. Don't pass on someone as good as him.

I've watched interviews of this guy and he's the REALEST. He's just a genuine dude.

It's funny watching people get so angry over the idea of a black person directing Black Panther.

"Just get the best person for the job!" they say.

Well, here's a thought. What if the best person for the job is a black director?
