J.J. Abrams Comments On STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Winning Oscars

Technical categories aside, big budget blockbusters rarely receive Oscar nominations let alone win awards. However, J.J. Abrams thinks there are a number of people from The Force Awakens who should be nominated. Do you think the film has a chance in a non-technical category?

While at the Winter TCA tour to promote the new Hulu adaptation of Stephen King's 11.22.63, director J.J. Abrams continued to field questions about Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  Namely, Abrams was asked whether he think the film should receive consideration at the Oscars.  "There are certain people that I know deserve it definitely and it would be wonderful if they got it. I feel like the gift of working on that film is such that I don’t need any further validation than the movie being out there and people liking the movie. There are people that I will be disappointed if they don’t get nominated because I think that the work they did was really exemplary."'

When pressed to name who those individuals are that he thinks deserve nominations, Abrams declined to go into detail.  Abrams could be referring to members of The Force Awakens cast (Daisey Ridley, John Boyega) or members of the crew, like the cinematographer (Daniel Mindel) or the editors (Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon).  "If I mention eight people, the ninth person would be like, ‘Thanks.’ But honestly, it feels obvious to me who deserves that kind of recognition. They might not even care. This may be something that they’re like, ‘Oh please.’ I feel like I saw how hard some of these artists worked and I feel they are deserving, but they probably don’t."

Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards will be announced on January 14th at 5:30AM PST.

Most likely wins are Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Production Design and Visual Effects.

He's clearly NOT talking about the lead actors/actresses lol. Obviously he is talking about the technical cast such as visuals, sound, production etc.

If there were any at all that were even nominated in the acting category, I would say maybe MAYBE Adam Driver for Supporting Actor. But no way he would win. Just a particularly strong performance in my mind that at least deserves a little recognition.

I wonder if there will ever be a movie where critics, fans, fanboys, haters, and trolls can all agree in saying " yeah, that was a good movie? Probably not :/

How about a Razzy for "Most Retarded Moment":

When Finn and Co. watch planets in a different galaxy blow up in real time in a bright afternoon sky.

Dummy.

@PietroMaximoff,

Further, Heath Ledger won a Best Supporting Oscar for his role as the Joker.
What the f.uck did Adam Driver do that approaches what Ledger did?

@Battabing all planets in star wars are in the same galaxy... Plus those were neighbouring planets too.

@Batmaniac,

Okay, but my point is they shouldn't have been able to see that happen.

Some of you have made it your personal mission to bash this movie at every turn. It's kinda pathetic, actually.

Nice reading comprehension.
I said he could MAYBE MAYBE be NOMINATED and that NO WAY HE WOULD WIN.
And not all performances have to be Heath Ledger's Joker to win an award.

I love how there's an argument going on about wheather or not they could've seen those planets explode, when in a universe as fantastical as Star Wars that shouldn't be the thing to cause so much disturbance.

Visual effect maybe but still would be unfair considering GOTG didn't get nothing neither any blockbuster since they said the money those movies make should be enough as a reward. They should keep it that way even if it's not fair for those movies but would be even more breaking this rule for Star Wars 7.

@TheBad
If it was a popularity contest, Avatar would have beat The Hurt Locker in terms of Best Picture. And Argo was very good.

Yeah, in the technical aspect liked sound and effect, Star Wars the Force Awakens is a no brainer.

But with movies like Spotlight, Jobs, Revenant, Hateful8, Carol, Bridge of Spies, Concusion, The Big Short and Turbo, Star Wars TFA has no chance at all getting best actor/actress supporting actor/actress or best picture for that matter.

Driver and Ford delivered a powerful performance on that bridge scene.

I don't really care for the Oscars tho. I knew it was a farce when they gave The Artist Best Picture over The Avengers.

Fantastic movie, but full of terrible Oscar-unworthy hammy acting...
... and that's part of its charm and what makes it feel like a throwback serial.
But I can't see it winning any statues for performances.
Battabing
Battabing - 1/10/2016, 9:36 AM
Stop excusing bullshit because "it's a fantasy".

It is nothing but STUPID in this day and age to depict people watching planets explode in real time from a different solar system, especially in a universe that's made it clear that travelers have to warp across vast distances in space.

Jar Jar Abrams not only mocked 5th grade science, but he broke basic Star Wars rules.

Seriously speaking, how fast is the speed of light? [frick]ing fast, that's how. So how long would it really take to see a system explode? Any scientists out there?

Daisey Ridley and John Boyega put out strong performances, but everybody knows they shouldnt even be nominate. The Force Awakens shouldnt be nominate for Best Picture too.
But it would be a huge shame to the Oscar if the movie doesnt get nominate for either best sound editing and mixing, best production design, best film editing and best visual effects. Especially best sound editing, best production design and best film editing, they should win it.

@battabing

A little bit of googling has told me that the Starkiller is a fictional Hyperspace weapon, that ripped through the fictional Star Wars Galaxy, destroying the fictional Hosnian system, and causing a fictional tear in time space, allowing the fictional image to travel at faster-than-light speed, and seen by the fictional characters on the fictional planet of Takodana.

So it's a fictional event in a work of fiction about a fictional galaxy that operates on fictional premises of physics. Such as the force.

Anyone who questions this is lifeless and stupid and probably a lifelong Virgin. Factually, not fiction.

^ The source for that study is Alan dean fosters novelisation of the film and the guesswork of some physics hacks online, but mostly just not important.

Oscars for the major categories (acting, writing, picture) are kind of a long shot (okay, a medium shot), but, having lived through the dark times of TPM and AOTC, I'm just glad we can say "STAR WARS" and "Oscar nomination" in the same sentence again and not laugh.
