Well, this one appears to have slipped under everyone's radar but the writing is on the wall, I suspect. Ever since Disney bought Marvel, fans were extremely nervous that the House of Mouse would take an aggressive overhaul approach to the going-ons at the House of Ideas. That notion has simmered down after a lot of time has passed and with only minimal interruptions to Marvel's daily business. However, earlier today, Robert Chapek, President of Distribution for The Walt Disney Studios, was promoted to President of Disney Consumer Products, and will be reporting to Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger.

He replaces Andy Mooney, who resigned as Chairman of the division earlier this week.

Who cares, right? Well, buried in this news was the fact that Chapek will have an all new role as "overseer of a new company-wide division that will consolidate retail and licensing across Disney's lines of business including Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, Marvel, Media Networks, Interactive Media and Consumer Products.

Well, to state it plainly, Kevin Feige, Joe Quesada, Tom Breevort, etc. will be directly reporting to this guy. This is a sharp contrast to how business was conducted before as it was reported that Marvel was relatively free to do as they pleased, minus the occasional Disney marketing push (looking at you Tron/Marvel covers).

Time will tell whether, Mr. Chapek will continue to let Marvel have a loose leash but it doesn't appear to be that way, with a special group being created that basically will be looking to achieve a tighter grip on all of their Disney,Pixar, Marvel properties.

Likewise, it is possible that direct involvement from Disney may strengthen Marvel rather than hamper it's efforts. It's anyone's guess right now.

Maybe we'll get that Jack Sparrow / Tony Stark buddy-cop flick everyone's been clamoring for. Wait....that's only me?

Less than two years ago, Mr. Chapek was put in charge of a new combination of Disney's theatrical and home-video distribution groups. Now, theatrical distribution will again be split off and headed by Disney Studios President Alan Bergman, the company said. Mr. Chapek is 52 years old.

Under Mr. Chapek, Disney Consumer Products will be responsible for selling DVDs from the company's namesake movie studio, as well as Pixar Animation, Marvel Studios and the company's ABC television studio.

Packaged console videogames from the company's interactive media group will also now be sold by the consumer products group. Disney Interactive Media Group will continue to develop and produce its own titles, and to market its online games.

Is it me, or does a Kingdom Hearts boss battle against Loki in Asgard sound really awesome haha. But in all seriousness, I don't expect things to change very much.

Film production is a completely separate division from Consumer Products. Consumer Products handles retail merchandise, not movies.

Besides, why should anyone be concerned about Marvel characters appearing with other Disney-owned characters? How often has there been a Muppets - Desperate Housewives mash-up? I could imagine there one day being a Marvel ride next door to the Pirates ride at a Disney theme park, but that's about it.

The one thing corporate america never learned / doesn't understand:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Which is not a "reactive" approach, it's a "proactive" approach. there are people already in place doing the proactive parlay, why compound a non-issue?
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 9/9/2011, 1:03 PM
Seriously, looking up info on this myself there doesn't seem to be any influence on publishing or filmmaking at all, so the opening like about Quesada and Feige is nonsense.

From the Wall Street Journal:

"Walt Disney Co. said it will combine sales of DVDs with toys, apparel and videogames into one group, naming movie-distribution president Robert Chapek the new president of its consumer-products division.

By combining the sales forces responsible for DVDs and ancillary merchandise, Disney hopes to increase its clout with the big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. that dominate both categories."

Corporate structures are huge and labyrinthine. Titles and flowcharts often have very little to say about who gets to make what kind of decisions.

This basically means the man is in charage of licensing the characters rights to differn't groups to make t-shirts, toys, posters, video games etc.. etc... that's why it went under the radar. Don't get me wrong I'm nervous about this too I mean what if he licenses the wrong company and my Hulk underoos are made out of an itchy material. Oh no!
TheQuestion
TheQuestion - 9/9/2011, 1:04 PM
I think you're reaching a little, Mark. He's overseeing the retail and licensing, and that has more to do with merchandise than films and comics. Kevin Fiege and Quesada will not have to report to him unless it regards toys, games, and other retail merchandise.

That's a good idea. Maybe we'd have a Kingdom Hearts game in way of Ultimate Alliance. I'd be up for that.

I'm relatively new to this site. Can anyone submit articles here? I've been seeing a number of articles that look like they were authored by people who seem to know little about the film business -- or about how the grown-up world really works in general.

I'm not saying this to be mean to any one -- I'm just wondering if kids write some of these articles.

This is for marketing purposes only. Even though Marvel still controls the majority of comics purchased, their sales are dwindling just like DC's sales (which for those of you who don't know, is the reason DC launched the new 52). Disney at the marketing helm for Marvel can only be concidered a good thing. They are the marketing kings and may just be able to keep Marvel not only afloat but prospering.

Maybe I wasn't clear but in addition to his consumer role, he's heading up a group that focuses on licensing. That's more than just pj's and t-shirts. But who knows, maybe this will be a good thing.

This is kinda off topic, but is anyone curious what's going to happen to the marvel section of UNiversal's Island of Adventure Amusement Park? Because I'm sure Disney would like to make some sort of Marvel themeed section in their parks, but since there already is one in universal... I don't know, not that big of a deal, but I went there this summer and that amde me think about it.

I have NO problem with a cop-buddy reboot of Howard the Duck featuring a psychotic, cynical Howard riffin' off his bitch-ass partner Mickey. Or how about instead of Turner and Hocch, Marvel busts out with (Frank) Castle and Pluto? ..T'Challa is...The Panther King...101 Lockjaws...

Do you seriously believe this is a threat? Their goal it to MAKE MONEY.

So, if Marvel movies are making money following the current "style" I really doubt it very much that Disney will interfere with that.

He'll probably just discuss the money the studios is making and create budget and business strategies (like merchandising).

Of course some marvel haters are cheering to the opposite, but I think that's really not likely to be harmful in any form. Actually if you think on how solid Disney is (and Marvel is becoming in a general media), we're probably only be more and more spoiled with different Marvel products.

And if they're good or not will only depend on the sales because, again, the objective here is to make money.

AOL Time Warner owns DC and they're doing great. They did some minor DC/Looney Tunes crossovers but that's it. Sp why does everyone fear for Marvel? Are they aware that Pixar is stronger with Disney than they were without it? How about ABC? Ya know, I wouldn't mind a little interference from Disney. Heck: I wouldn't mind seeing a little cartoon where a Marvel character shows up with a Disney character.....kinda like GL in "Duck Dodgers".

I feel that this takes away the great relationship that Disney has with other companys. It used to basicly be Pixar makes the movie Disney distributes it,and now thats gone.
