Empire recently conducted a Live Chat with Director Nicolas Winding Refn and his fans to discuss Drive. Somehow I was able to sneak in some questions about Wonder Woman. Here's what Refn had to say:
Are the rumors about you making Wonder Woman true?
Nicolas Winding Refn says: I would LOVE to make Wonder Woman, I think I would be perfect to make Wonder Woman.
What would your vision of Wonder Woman be like? Kitchy and fun or dark and serious?
Nicolas Winding Refn says: Everything that Christina Hendricks represents
How similar would your Wonder Woman film be to Valhalla Rising?
Nicolas Winding Refn says: There's a lot of resemblance.
How do you feel about comic book movies in general?
Nicolas Winding Refn says:If they're great, I love them. I very much enjoyed Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, and I also enjoyed the first Iron Man. Captain America also seemed really interesting.
With Tom hardy being everywhere at the moment...and being a big bad guy in one of the biggest films of all time next year...How did you find working with him on Bronson?
Nicolas Winding Refn says: I loved it, it was a wonderful experience. We just bumped into each other a few months ago at Comic-Con and reminded each other that we must work together again soon.
Are you on Twitter?
Nicolas Winding Refn says: I don't know how to twit. I don't even have a facebook profile, but I guess I
have to learn.
Seems like this guy would be perfect for the job. He'd bring that gritty, bloody, mythological aspect to the film that Wonder Woman needs. Hopefully, this guy is on Warner Bros. radar. In a past interview with
Movie Line Refn describes what his take on the movie would be:
"Wonder Woman, I really want to make. That, I’m hoping, will be my $200 million extravaganza — if I even get close to it. That’s why I say, “Well, let me go make Drive [a thriller shooting soon with Ryan Gosling]. Let me start the ball rolling within the system.”
No, it’s not the only way, but I think that would be a starting point for looking at it. You need a great, extravagant, marketable action film — and everything that comes with it. But I think that when Christopher Nolan did the Batman movies, I think he very cleverly went back to the source material and took themes that had maybe not been exercised. And he was able to make very good and successful films with them. So I think the audience is very much out there. It’s just how you do it. And I think that some of the films that have worked over the years have worked for different reasons than people sometimes think they do.
"And where Wonder Woman on one hand is a great female character who can be included in many great fight scenes, she doesn’t have great villains against her. OK, so you create some. She doesn’t have a Joker or those classic Batman kinds of guys. But she does have her whole world that she comes from, which is fascinating. The whole idea of a woman who is basically more powerful than any man — and who will always be that, and comes from a society of women who are more powerful than men — is an interesting theme that I think can be very contemporary."
The full transcript should be up on
Empire soon. Refn had a ton more to say about Drive, Bronson, and his other past films. Be sure to check it out when it comes online.
