Mark Millar Discusses How He Would've Rebooted DC Comics

Scottish comic book writer, Mark Millar (Kick Ass, Nemesis, Superior) reveals how DC's new 52 would've gone if he were calling the shots.

Speaking on his Millar World Forum, Mark Millar states how he would reboot the DC Universe:

Congrats to Johnny DC for getting good numbers and plenty of returns on their investment on the DC reboot. But how would yours have been different? I'm taking today off to arse around, but before I go I'm curious: Who would you have nabbed for the books?

I love playing this game. My friends and I were chatting about it just this morning. DC would need to pony up serious cash (as Marvel's biggest creators [are] generally paid WAY more), but imagine you've got access to the WB vault and you can literally buy anyone. Even Image guys who were making a million an issue in the 90s. You've got access to EVERYBODY. How would your DC 52 differ? Mine, for starters, would be about 25-30 books :)

But go for it. I'd love Leinil Yu on Batman, McNiven drawing Justice League, Kirschl drawing Teen Titans, Brendan McCarthy on The Flash. Kev O'Neill (does the best aliens) on Green Lantern (with Pat Mills on scripts) and Frank Miller doing anything he wants.

I'd like to continue the conversation here at CBM. If you were in charge of DC's reboot, what would your vision be?

The 2011 reboot of the DC Universe is a publishing event following the conclusion of the current "Flashpoint" crossover storyline. It will entail changes to both the publishing format and fictional universe. Publishing changes include same day release of physical comics with digital platforms, all DC Universe titles being cancelled or restarted at a new issue 1, the former Wildstorm imprint being rolled into the greater DC Universe, and a number of new titles being released to round the number of ongoing series being published on a monthly basis up to 52. It will be also accompanied by a number of in universe changes designed to make characters more modern and accessible, though the scope of the changes will vary from character to character.

One thing that wouldn't be different is that Millar would still have made Superman an communist.

@siddhant1138 - Brubaker Batman? THAT I would read.

@MrEko I know, right? I was mesmerized by his insight into DC's universe and history. Just. WOW. Think I'll read it again so I can really understand MM's amazing ideas...

(someone has probably said this before) I would not let Frank Miller do what he wants... that Holy terror biz is just insane.

I have a Leinil Yu sketch of Batman..he would knock that book out of the park, without question. Jon Cassaday and Warren Ellis doing Superman would not suck,either....

I would actually reboot it. Start over from scratch on every single character. Change a lot more than was changed so as to avoid comparisons with what came before. No crossovers for a year.

Frank Miller sucks as of late. Holy Terror is horrible and racist. Miller, as said above, does have a huge ego. I wasn't on board with the New 52, and there are some stuff about it that bug me, but I am pretty happy regarding what's happening with the DC Universe! DC is doing stuff right...but that's just my opinion.

He'd probably show Batman's parents being sawn in half by a chainsaw and show every single person on Krypton being incinerated in its explosion. Plus Batman would probably kill people and everyone would be unlikable assholes =P

I like some of Millar's work, but when he's given free-reign he goes way over the edge. He's better on a leash, like his Marvel stuff (as in non-creator owned Marvel stuff)

LMAO, DC would be bankrupt if Mark Millar had his way

the guy is out of touch with everything outside of his inking studio

"Frank Miller doing anything he wants".... yeah have you read anything by Miller after the 80s? There's a reason why nobody gives Frank Miller anything he wants

I would do what Alan Moore would do; Write a huge catastrophic event that changes the attitudes of people from then on. Superman not being married to Lois Lane is a lot more powerful when there's a story behind it, not just motivation to sell books. Superman would be a lot more interesting if his lack of human empathy didn't stem from his parents retconned death, but if humanity somehow turned against the Kents and Supes turns his back on humanity.

but nope, we got a lame company wide retcon because dc never knows how to stay relevant outside of film.

I would have actually rebooted everything. Batman would go back to the beginning with him working alone. Damian would never exist because the idea of Batman having a biological son just screws the character in my opinion. The Justic League would come much later, giving all of the characters the time needed to actually be associated with one another. Pretty much, retell all of the origins in a new fashion. Batman's origin wouldn't need to be retold, but maybe do a different take on Superman or Wonder Woman.

He is only listing the artists he'd like to see draw each title. When he say's "Frank Miller doing whatever he wants" he is obviously still considering him as an artist not a writer......and yeah, Miller is a good artist and should be displaying those talents once again........just on Daredevil instead of some lame reboot BS.

@thanos83 are you serious? how in the hell did "squeamish fanboys" whine it away? do you know how well that freaking book sold?! regardless who was whining the reason it went away is because millar is incredibly unbeleivably late with his scripts (id probably put some of the blame on jim lee too),the funny thing is, no ones confirmed that the books even gone, its just "on-hold", this guy makes Kevin Smith look like Speedy Gonzales!

I absolutely hate this man. I love how he thinks his opinions are relevant, because they are so hilariously NOT relevant.

But I can't hear him over the "CHA-CHING!" and oustanding praise of the DC's new 52.

Millar would have turned the whole universe into a bunch of deviants and perverts, such as Batman and Alfred molesting Robin and Nightwing working with them running a prostitution ring providing boys for pedophiles out of the Batcave. Luthor and the Joker would look like Boy Scouts in comparison.

The more interesting question here is how would I have revamped the DC universe. If it was up to me, I might have tweaked the costumes- lost the trunks on the outside and all. My biggest change would be going back to sound fundamental storytelling. There would be no crossovers, no events, no gimmicky 'deaths'. Sound stories with an all-ages approach confined to one title, with the best writers and artists that I can get, and I would drop some of the fancy coloring and paper and lower the cost of the books, targeting $2.00 as my selling price. I would also reduce the number of titles for major characters.

This would be followed by unveiling a new line of ten books featuring DC's biggest stars and teams, also priced at $2.00, that would be what the Ultimate universe was supposed to be: an all-ages book that tweaks the characters slightly, and sheds decades of continuity to get back to the essence of what made the characters great in the first place, and allow younger and newer readers to enjoy the characters without all the baggage of continuity. This way, all readers are happy- those who like darker and more adult stories and those who prefer an old-school all ages approach. Anyone with me here?

comicb00kguy - 10/5/2011, 1:21 PM
Oops. Damn edit button. Forget the all-ages thing in the second paragraph. Just good, fundamental storytelling would be my aim.
