Jon Hamm, "I've Been Offered My Share Of Superhero Movies"

Jon Hamm (Mad Men) reveals that he's been approached for a number of comic book movies however none of the roles discussed have made him relinquish his misgivings about the genre.

Just yesterday, we heard from Emily Blunt about why she declined the roles of Black Widow and Peggy Carter and we'll now hear a tale along the same lines from actor Jon Hamm. While speaking to IFC about his new film “Friends With Kids,” the actor discussed his apparently, numerous brushes with the comic book movie genre and why his career has not ventured into "costumes and spandex."

“I’ve been offered my share of superhero movies, but I think I’ve aged out of that,” he said.

However, Hamm quickly went into PR mode and clarified that he's been in "talks" for such roles and that he's had numerous chances to play costumed heroes yet it just wasn't a right fit.

“My name has come up in a lot of superhero discussions,” Hamm said. “It’s a tough thing, you know? It’s a tough game to get into. I have mad, crazy respect for the people that can pull it off because it’s something that can be done poorly so easily. But, you know, it’s a big commitment and it’s probably something that, unless it’s the right thing, it’s probably not so much my jam.”

When asked about his movie role selection process, Hamm stated that it's not an exact science and he just picks based on what interests him rather than who's attached or whether it's a specific genre.

“The only way I kind of choose material is is the material interesting to me and are the people involved with it people that inspire me in some way. And I think that in every case, with every project I’ve taken on, the answer to one or both of those questions has been yes,” he explained. “I will continue to do that, and that’s kind of just the way I pick stuff to do. I’ve been fortunate enough to never be like, ‘Well, I’ve got to do this one because I’ve got to pay the rent.’ And hopefully that will never be a deciding factor.”

As many of you CBMers know, Hamm's name has come up in relation to the roles of Superman in Zack Snyder's reboot and it was rumored that he was one of the MANY actors Marvel looked at for Captain America before selecting Chris Evans. And if you look at fancasts here, you'll see that Hamm is a popular choice to play Batman following Warner Bros. reboot after The Dark Knight Rises. Regardless, it appears that Hamm isn't totally ruling out comic book movies, only that it would have to be an incredibly exceptional role. Certainly, he has to star in one, you can't have this as the stand alone superhero character on your resume!

Hamm would be a good choice for a cbm like batman or ironman or maybe captain america but remember he is 40 years old and they need a younger actor for a franchise cause if a studio want to do 2-3 movies we are talking about an 8 to 10 tear period.....

As much as I love CBMs, I'm happy he hasn't done one yet. There are at least 3 more seasons of Mad Men left and I value each one of them more.

If only he was taller would have been perfect for Batman coming to the end of his crime fighting days - Dark Knight Returns

I have Jon Hamm as Commissioner Gordon in the next batman trilogy. I think he'd make a good Felix Leiter too

Dark Knight Returns sucked big time. It was a chore in itself reading it. But back to the topic in hand, this guy has intelligence, I like the way he picks his work, or rather lets it pick him instead of, as he put it, taking any job just to pay the rent.

I could see Hamm playing a Kingdom Come version of Supes. I also think he could possibly take over for Bale as an older Wayne after TDKR.

I think he's right and he's aged out of most Superhero roles (as the hero) but he could play an older version of Supes but I think he's more fitted to Lex Luther. Actually I think he'd be the perfect Lex.

His age can't be used as an excuse because Samuel L Jackson is 63 years old and doesn't even look 50.

@JatevinM Yeah, but Sam's perfromances consist of him standing or sitting around talking.

As an older Superman i.e. Kingdom Come, Superman Beyond etc I think he'd have been great but I don't think he was ever considered for Man of Steel as its a film about a Superman's origins.

Also I do think he could be a pretty good Batman or even as supervillain Lex Luthor.

Superior...and maybe he even gets an Oscar nomination for the role if done right.

Can't see him for any role...I mean, yes, he can be a great Nick Fury, but Samuel L. Jackson has filled the shoes. He can be Batman in the reboot, but I don't think I really want to see another Batman series after Nolan's in a short while, and if they do in the future, he'll be too old indeed; especially if they want to expand the DC Universe as one; the difference between him and Henry Cavill alone is already way too far. Kingdom Come Superman, yes, but something like that can only happen in our minds, I guess.

Hey, I can understand and respect his opinion. Truth is no actor or actress should take apart their not completely invested in. Let's face it, not all actors are made for all parts. The only way he would be disrespecting the CBM community is if he took apart, and mailed it in.

Personally, I would love to see Emily Blunt in a Superhero costume, but if she's not up to it, so be it. I still think she's hot!

I'd love to see him as Punisher or Lex Luthor. He'd be a decent Superman and Batman, but he isn't my first choice for either role.

I would much rather see an older, capable actor like Hamm to play roles than a marquee that says "Seth Rogan is Green Hornet" or "Jonah Hill is The Punisher".

They better not do anymore Batman movies after Bale. All these reboots are getting out of hand.
