Marvel AR is powered by Aurasma, a San Francisco-based company that's been making augmented reality apps for several years. David Stone, director of client services at Aurasma, says readers can expect about eight AR "experiences" per comic.

What immediately comes to mind for me is that this is an application that could be used rather effectively for presenting continuity plots to new readers. Meaning that you no longer would have to jump on at the start of a series arc, to get a quick synopsis of the back issue content and history of the character and series, all you'd need to do is hold your tablet or smart phone up and maybe EIC Alonso pops up and fills you in on all the things you need to know. At the very least, this is a rather intriguing development from the House of Ideas and with the latest report that the next iPad could sell 1 million copies on the first day of it's release alone, this could very well be the start of something big for the industry.

Here's the official press release.

AUSTIN, Texas, March 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, at the SXSW Interactive Festival, Marvel Entertainment unveiled Marvel AR, the first major augmented reality app from a comic book company. As part of the recently announced Marvel ReEvolution, which brings the world of print and digital media together for a comics experience like never before, the Marvel AR app powered by Aurasma will be released on April 2 for iOS 3GS, 4, 4S and high-powered Android devices. Fans can first discover the power of this new app in Avengers VS X-Men #1, arriving in comic stores on April 4 and kicking off the comic book event of the year in which the world's most popular Super Heroes go to war!

By opening this app and scanning select Marvel products featuring the Marvel AR logo, you'll unlock exclusive content starring the world's most popular Super Heroes -- including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk and many others! Go behind the scenes of your favorite comics, see new footage, hear from creators, get caught up on past events and more!

"It's time to join the Marvel ReEvolution, as we bring the worlds of print and digital media together for an unprecedented fan experience," said Peter Phillips, senior vice president and general manager, Marvel Digital Media Group. "Avengers VS X-Men is the biggest story we've ever told and teaming with Aurasma allows us to bring our fans a deeper experience when they purchase select Marvel comics and other Marvel products. Just wait until you see what we've planned!"

Marvel partnered with Aurasma, the world's leading augmented reality platform, to create a mobile experience designed to empower fans to discover a new world of content that brings their favorite Super Heroes to life through tablets and mobile devices. Aurasma's cutting-edge image recognition technology enables the Marvel AR app to recognize images in new Marvel comic books, promotional posters and other merchandise, seamlessly augmenting the images with interactive virtual content such as videos, animations and more.

"Marvel is no stranger to digital media and is once again making history, this time by using Aurasma's transformative technology to bridge the physical world with the virtual," said, David Stone, Aurasma's director of client services. "What better way to excite and engage fans than to give them the power to interact with all of their favorite characters in a new way?"

Aurasma's free platform unlocks a whole new dimension for partners to creatively enhance the real world. In this case, comic books will reach new depths by unleashing coveted and fan-pleasing content like director and editor commentary and other special features, only accessible through the Marvel AR app.

The Marvel AR companion app, powered by Aurasma, will be available for free in April at the Apple App Store and Android Market.

That's cool , but what if you just buy the comic digitally. Will the digital comic not have all the extra stuff?

#1- This host's a douche.

#2- Really dumb idea.

Just gimmie my damn comic and let me get lost for 10-15 minutes.
This 'back-and-forth' stuff TOTALLY takes you out of the story psychologically!

...never for me...sorry Marvel.

Don't like it don't use it, not like you're losing anything from the print. Just gaining a little extra if you want it.

Why the hell would I want to look at my comic through the camera on my handheld device?

Look, I understand that comics need to keep all of those stores afloat for a while yet, but seriously Marvel, if you want me to actually buy comics again, just let me download the damn things on release day at a reasonable price for a *non-printed, paper-free, warehousing-free, shipping-free* product (You know... all of those costs you've blamed for the skyrocketing price of your comics over the years.) There's your digital revolution.

Hell, offer me the digital version a month later, if that's what you have to do to keep from torpedoing all of those brick and mortar stores... but stop being so damn random in your digital offerings. Make everything you release available on a regular schedule of some sort, and at a price that doesn't make me think I'm being gouged to support someone else's paper preference.

I'm tired of artificial restraints on digital comics in order to keep printed ones competitive. I don't need DVD extras... I just want to be able to read a comic at a decent price without traveling 30 miles to find a damn comic store still in existence.

What a dipstick! The guy in the video says to 'Hold the device over the comic while reading it'! Dork! Read the comic first, then go back and scan it for additional media! Doooooooooosh!
marantaz
marantaz - 3/12/2012, 1:39 PM
monkeyballs, if anything, I think it's Marvel's way of introducing the comicbook fan who's uncomfortable with the digital age of comics to the format. For those that would prefer to buy a comicbook rather than download one, they will be eased into the digital world by getting familiar with this app ... ... maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

I don't really understand what they're doing. Oh, and if having 2 super hero teams fight each other is Marvel's biggest event ever, then there's not much more for me to say... Nuff said!

It's actually quite astonishing how many people post without reading or watching the article.

For the lazy, I will summarize.

This is a way of putting 'DVD extras' into comic books. Which means AFTER you are done reading and enjoying the print copy of the book, you can go back and see some extras.

@mothman

To say all marketing is the same is like saying all media is the same.

Movies, music, animation, pictures... it's all entertainment right?

@Gusto That would be Belladonna, if I'm not mistaken...and her award is WELL deserved...

..umm...I mean, that's what my sick, depraved heathen 'friends' tell me...:P

..as for this app, I'm with a few OG's on this thread...It's nice that Marvel is on top of the digital comics revolution, but nothing will ever beat the feeling of holding an actual comic book in my hand...

But considering I know the name of the dirtiest girl in porn, I guess that makes me a liar, doesn't it? lol
Giraffehead
Giraffehead - 3/12/2012, 4:08 PM
@PeterDarker121

This app would be in ADDITION to 'holding an actual comic book' in your hands.

I am really losing faith in all posters on this site.
