Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is a four-issue comic book limited series written and drawn by Frank Miller, originally published by DC Comics under the title Batman: The Dark Knight in 1986. When the issues were released in a collected edition later that year, the story title for the first issue was applied to the series as a whole. The Dark Knight Returns tells the story of a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne who comes out of retirement to fight crime, only to face opposition from the Gotham City police force and the United States government.

A sequel (made again by Miller), The Dark Knight Strikes Again, was published in 2001.

The upcoming Christopher Nolan film The Dark Knight Rises has been confirmed to take up the action eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, and involves a retired Batman coming back to take up the mask once more.

Never been a fan of The Dark Knight Returns, or Frank Miller really, but I'll see if the animated feature is better. I like their animated stuff.

@GraphicCity- No new footage was shown. RIM confirmed that they showed the second trailer, and cos the Russian's had never seen footage of the movie before they thought it was new.

Batman animation? Terrible? I doubt it. DC animation is always great, Under the Red Hood is my favorite so far.

The image of Batman stamping the hell out of Superman in the article was once voted the top 100 most memorable image in comics!

..Still is, in my opinion!

@GUNSMITH: An adaptation of The Killing Joke would rock. One of my favorite Batman stories, plus Mark Hamill said he'd come back to voice Joker if such a film was made.

Frank Miller is phenomenal, I'm thrilled to see that his works are finally being adapted into films. I'd love to see the DC animated films take on more stories from Jeph Loeb as well. They've been doing a terrific job w/ these animated films, I'm sure the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns will only raise the bar. Bruce Timm is tackling what Hollywood won't!

Killing Joke FTW.
People really dislike Frank Miller these days, huh? I must say, he lost me at Wall Street/Holy Terror. But some people haven't even read DKR?! Dudes! Seriously! Go and read it now. What the Hell happened to the comic book community? I suppose Watchmen doesn'y look so appealing, either, right?

DukeAcureds - 3/17/2012, 11:42 AM
I despair.
All the same this movie will blow not only The Avengers, but The Dark Knight Rises out of the water. Especially if they've got Montgomery on directing duties. Wonder Woman and Year One were awesome!

so the dark knight returns....is this going to be a follow up to batman year one??...if so im sure joker will be in this one since they showed his card at the end of year one just like in batman begins.
its obviously not goin to follow the comic book EXACTLY but has and steal some ideas...for this new movie coming out
but i cant wait..i hope the guy who did the voice for bruce in batman year one returns to do his job!

Ok they say it looks cool but more importantly how goods Superman vs the Elite?

The Dark Knight Returns is a good book but more the first half than the second I hate the way Frank Miller turned Superman into a government stooge.

LOL @ all the Liberal Pussies hating on Miller. And @ everyone else don't bother bringing up works of Miller's that might appeal to them because once you say something anti-Lib like Miller did you are forever evil and on their shit list. Libs are truly the close minded ones.

The Dark Knight Returns would be so freaking cool as an animated movie. I can't wait for this.

I don't understand why there are people hating on this book when it is one of the best Batman stories ever.
