Life After Robert Donwey Jr. Hangs Up His Repulsors. Kevin Feige Says A New Actor Will Continue On Similar To James Bond

Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) isn't getting any younger and one day he'll have to stop being Iron Man. Will Marvel reboot or continue on? Kevin Feige has the answer.

Badass Digest talked to Feige at CinemaCon about something I've been thinking about for quite some time. Robert Downey Jr. (47) is not going to play Iron Man forever. The question is, how much longer? With the MCU set up for all intents and purposes as a cinematic comic book universe, the stories will just continue on unless there's a New 52 wholesale reboot. Unlike their comic book counterparts, the actors that suit up in superhero movies age [some very badly]. And while most of the Marvel heroes are young, RDJ is no spring chicken and will likely be the first actor [RDJ or Samuel L. Jackson] who will say goodbye to his franchise. Here's what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said when he was presented with this very scenario.

FEIGE: "I think Bond is a good example. Let’s put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn’t, and I’m still here making these movies, we don’t take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it."

RDJ can next be seen in The Avengers, opening May 4th in the United States.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio in August 2011 and New York City in September 2011. The film was converted to 3D in post-production.

The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States in 2D and 3D.

Running Time: 2 hrs 22 minutes
Release Date: May 4 2012 (USA)
MPAA Rating: PG 13 for for intense sequences of action and violence, some disturbing images, and language
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, Stellan Skarsgård, Mark Ruffalo, Amanda Righetti, Scarlett Johansson and Lou Ferrigno The Incredible Hulk (voice) .
Directed by: Joss Whedon

I hope RDJ continues for a while, but when he's done, "James Bonding it" is probably the best way to go.

Sounds like a good idea. I hope RDJ gets to play Iron Man for at least two Avengers sequels (and maybe an Iron Man 4), but going the James Bond route could work.

They should "James Bond it" with Batman as well. That way we don't need 8 origins and we can continue on. Glad that they're doing this with Iron Man. It's smart, and we all love RDJ anyway, so here's to him as Tony for a long while!

The only reason to do a reboot is if the fist incarnation was unsatisfaying or botched (IM was NOT) or if the current technology allows you to do things that you couldn't with the original. I doubt special effects are going to get so much better as to warrant a reboot (as is the case with Superman). James Bond it all the way.

If only RDJ was 10 years younger. Same with Sam Jackson. It sucks all the great actors are getting old!!! Soon they'll be gone :(

No reboot please! We have this crazy marvel cinematic universe being built and by only changing the actors we could maybe someday have movies on actual crossover events like civil war or even World War hulk. NO TO REBOOT. Just keep it going, im tired of watching origin stories.

FoiledCranium - 4/27/2012, 11:34 AM
I completely agree with knossis. If it's a universe that stays true to itself, and keeps continuity, you'd have to have another actor take over.

He's in damn good shape for a 47 year old. Plus with all the advancements in CGI and what not de-aging him shouldn't be that hard.

But if/when it comes down to it.. yes Bonding it is the way to go IMO.

it'll be a sad day when he hangs up his repulsors,no need to reboot just continue the stories.

i hope one day we see like a kang storyline where iron man turns up at the avengers & he opens the front of his helmet revealing old man tony from the future with a warning about kang.

robert downey jr could do that when he starts getting to old for the role.

You'd think the people at Marvel were smart or something. Oh, wait... that's right... they know exactly what they're doing and are doing it well. Forgot about that.
Starlight

He doesn't need to perform a lot of action scenes and he's "hidden" behind a mask and armor, I think he can still go a looooooooong way making Iron Man movies (regarding the "Age" issue.

Colin Farrell could be a perfect candidate for a 007's approach ^^

A reboot is inevitable I don't care what anybody say the current Bond movies with Daniel Craig are reboots they even start before he gets his 007 status so its a good bet Iron man will get rebooted I hope its not for another decade cause RDJ owns the role

Figure RDJ is IM for anothe 6-8 years...there's no telling what actor may come up in the business that we haven't met yet that could fill his shoes.
