COMICS: Does DC Comics' New 52 Include A Reboot Of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN?

In the latest issue of Justice League Dark, there's a panel that retcons a bit of Sandman history. Is this a signal that Morpheus is joining his Vertigo compatriots in the mainstream DC universe?

For those of you that have read Neil Gaiman's Sandman, you know very well what that item above is and what its place in the original Sandman volume. At one point, the item belonged to Dream of the Endless but it was subsequently lost and fell into the hands of B-list villain, Doctor Destiny. Without delving too deep into Gaimans brilliant run, the above reference in Justice League Dark thoroughly interrupts the continuity of the original series. Part of Gaiman's contract with DC was that the series would end once he was finished thus the above image is a bit of a headscratcher. Could more Sandman stories be on the way?

I thought everything involving The Sandman had to have Gaiman's blessing after they screwed up Death in a Captain Atom issue from ages ago? Anyway this is certainly an interesting development. For me anything that includes Morpheus has my attention.

neil gaimen's sandman should stay in the vertigo comics line,i don't think it would work.

@SuperBat77 Hate to break it to you but John Constantine is canon in both the DC and Vertigo.

Well...the 'dreamstone' was a retcon of Destiny's materioptikon to begin with.

I've been viewing the entire relaunch as a pile of weak Elseworlds stories anyway...

So despite the reboot, the Endless and their stories are still the same

though if Sandman were to show up, I don't think it would be Morpheus but rather a different interpretation of Dream...

Whatever... they've ruined almost everything else. Why not bastardize Neil Gaiman's work?

If they do a different interpretation of Sandman that is not the "Dream" we knew before... maybe...

I'm so disappointed in DC right now, they can only impress me at this point.

This could be explained with the idea from "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" because everyone would have been cause to dream of this new universe which would cause it's creation. However I'd rather them leave Sandman's stories alone but, I am interested in the possibility in him returning or at least some of the endless popping up a bit more. I think the last one to pop up was Death in Action Comics #894 in 2010

Those saying that Sandman would not work outside of Vertigo DO realize it started out in the mainstream DC universe, right? With appearances from DC characters and had direct ties to DC mainstream continuity? Sometimes, I think people bitch just to see their words on the screen and don;t have any idea what they are actually talking about...

Okay, look, The New 52 comprises Earths 0, 13 and 50 AKA pre-flashpoint New Earth, Vertigo and Wildstorm. This is a new continuity.
The fact that Vertigo comics such as Hellblazer are still going is slightly puzzling, but I guess they also take place in The New 52. Pandora did say that these universes used to be the same (as Comedian666@ pointed out) and then diverged at some point and she puts them back together.
Besides (SPOILER) Morpheus was reborn, in the Dreaming. There's no reason that the Dreaming continuity can not be the same despite the Earth that it interacts with having been changed.
As for doing more Sandman, even though Gaiman doesn't want them to... They're doing Before Watchmen. After Sandman is nothing in comparison. But srtill pretty bad.

The dreamstone appeared also in a JSA comic pre-reboot, I don't think people made such a fuss back then.

The real issue is if and when DC's going to release the remaining Sandman Mystery Theatre trade paperbacks.

its like one person says "no" and then the sheep of the board just follow along.
i've read the old sandman series. the art is total shit, shit drawings, its too dark in parts, the people look like they will jump out of there skin at any time.

i for one , would love to see a revamp of sandman. add that shit to my subs.

I agree with pockyhockey42 -- it's probably going to be a new character w/the name Sandman. Or a new interpretation of Dream.
