COMICS: Stephanie Brown Joins Batman In SMALLVILLE But Not As Robin

COMICS: Stephanie Brown Joins Batman In SMALLVILLE But Not As Robin

And if you think she's Spoiler or Batgirl, you're also mistaken. She's.....Nightwing? Find out more about Smallville Season 11's Batman and Nightwing after the jump.

Don't shoot the messenger....

While I'm sure fans of Stephanie Brown are thrilled to see her return to the world of comic books (even if it's not in the main DC universe) I'm sure they would prefer it in one of her traditional incarnations. Prior to the DCnU, Brown started out as Spoiler before becoming Robin and then eventually Batgirl. Well in the Smallville Universe, Stephanie Brown is none of those, she's Nightwing. That does means she was probably Robin at some point in her costumed career unless Smallville is totally reinventing the wheel and there's no way they'd do that, right....? Writer Bryan Q. Miller, who 'coincidentally' wrote a 2009 Batgirl series starring Brown has the following to share on this development---

"Bruce can be somewhat of an angry man. Stephanie's personality is so can-do and unsinkable and bright, so it's very much on purpose on Bruce's part that he has a good cop going out on patrol with him every night." (Miller says it will eventually be addressed as to why Stephanie is Nightwing in this comic and not Batgirl.)

Batman and 'Nightwing' will make their debut in Smallville Season 11 in the fourt part arc titled "Detective" this August, and then in print in September. Snarkiness aside, good writing can make any new interpretation of a comic book character seem "brilliant" and "cutting-edge" so I'll probably pick up the title and check it out. But god help DC and this title if it's simply more of the derivative drivel that the television churned out in it's later seasons.

And here's a small color version of that cover.

LOL, thats awesome. I'm glad to see they are doing something different with the character. That's what Smallville is all about.

I also love seeing people get mad about something in Smallville. Makes the universe that much better.

LOVE SMALLVILLE

I dont expect Smallville the comic to be around very long.
I think creators are kind of using it just to test what all they can do to test fan reaction. If it works, they may try something similar in DCU. If it doesnt work, no one cares since its just the Smallville comic.
Its a guinea pig and it doesnt really attract the real Smallville fans anyway

CBM is the only site on the internet that's actually criticizing this... Do you guys not realize that Bryan Q. Miller wrote the Stephanie Brown Batgirl comic? This would have been where that comic went any way, but it was canned cause of the New 52.

Also, this comic is constantly doing well, and a lot better than BOTH Superman and Action... SO SUCK IT HATERS!!!!

@SeaborneLegend It's not bad, it's a pretty average comic and it does take a while for things to get going story-wise, I wouldn't exactly recommend it but there are worse things to spend 99 cents on
MJPETTY7
MJPETTY7 - 6/14/2012, 2:43 PM
@SeaborneLegend It's written like an actual episode of the show, so it takes a while to get to the action, but the characters are more solid than the New 52's.

@darkmetal You have some good points. Tbh, the Season 11 comic is more entertaining than Season 8 as a whole (with some exceptions) for me.

@MJPETTY7 - Im curious why you said this "Also, this comic is constantly doing well, and a lot better than BOTH Superman and Action... SO SUCK IT HATERS!!!!"

Inst Smallville just on issue 3 now? Where do you get your "constantly" numbers from?

Was there a PREVIOUS Smallville you are referring to?
MJPETTY7
MJPETTY7 - 6/14/2012, 3:29 PM
@Tevii No, talking this current Smallville series. Also, check the DC Comics App every week when there's a new Smallville, it's higher than Action and Superman pretty much week after week. If that's not proof enough, it's at least higher than Superman as that comic has changed writers 3 times and it's only on issue 9.

@MJPETTY7 - ok so you mean digital downloads. I was just curious. ill have to look into overall numbers.

Morrison is a crappy, overrated writer and Superman is definitely trying to find its place. Perez is a helluva a talent, but his dialogue might as well have been for novels, too wordy.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think that's cool that Stephanie Brown is being brought into the Smallville universe.

I don't like that she has taken up the title of Nightwing though. The design on the upper part of her costume is purple(Spoiler reference), instead of blue.

What about Dick Grayson? Where is he in the Smallville universe? I hope they explain this well. I do like the coloring of Batman's suit. It looks pretty cool.

"Also, this comic is constantly doing well, and a lot better than BOTH Superman and Action... SO SUCK IT HATERS!!!!"

Silly boy. Yes, Smallville has been DC's top-selling DIGITAL comic - all 2 issues - but digital sales are only a teeny fraction of each book's total sales. In physical sales (and obviously total sales) Superman and Action both outsell Smallville by miles. Long, LONG miles. So, you know...sucky-sucky

@Tevii I agree about Morrison. After his Batman run I was done, now he's ruining Superman too.

@JonnyKrypton Yeah, except Superman's changed writers so many times because it's not selling well and DC LOVES Morrison no matter which hero he butchers, so what's your point?... Smallville continues to sell well in BOTH digital and print. Nuff said.
