The monster that is Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead just keeps getting bigger and bigger as issue #100 was just announced as the best selling single comic book issue of the century. In only 1 day, over 375,000 units were sold, making it the most since 1997's The Darkness #11. The initial order of 383,612 was completely sold out, a feat which harkens back to the glory days of the comic book industry.

“The Walking Dead continues to greatly exceed all my expectations in all forms,” said Robert Kirkman. “I am especially excited for what this means for comics as an industry, that this is an independent comic hitting that number.” Kirkman continued, “The future of comics couldn’t be brighter as more and more readers are embracing new ideas in a big way.”

This comic was frikken awesome! The only problem with The Walking Dead is having to wait for the next issue to come out!!

Kirkman continues to throw all kinds of challenges at the survivors and it's always a pleasure to read. Unlike Marvel and DC, anyone can die at any moment. And if they come back, you have to kill em again!!

really? Even though comics has and is an evolving genre of entertainment, you can't label it this since its from a modern perspective. I think many of the sales were because of the 10 thousand variant covers fans "HAD" to buy. Give me the real numbers.

Can we get a graph of what the other selling books were for the century? I mean i would like to see what it beat out.

Lmao! Could this article possibly unite DC and Marvel fansboys and inspire them to collectively attack the evil that is Image?

@stuckInPanels . . Its only the past 12 years. This century. Golden Age is last century. Also inflation wouldn't matter since this is in units sold, not dollars.

I read issue 100. WHY?! WHY DID YOU DO THAT, KIRKMAN?!
MJPETTY7
MJPETTY7 - 7/15/2012, 8:22 PM
I've read all 100 issues, and I'm done to be honest. As much as I enjoyed it, it hurt to much to read, even more so than ANYthing the Governor did. Anyway, I'm done with The Walking Dead comic, love the show and will watch Season 3, but as for the comic, I'm taking it off my monthly pull list, not cause it wasn't good, it was GREAT, but it hurt to much. Damn you Robert Kirkman, damn you.

@MJPETTY7 I know how you feel dude. So many awesome characters are gone already. I'd mention some but Marvel72 is only up to issue #25. RIP

@Captain and MJP.....I been hearing that from some friends, I read the spoiler so I know what happened. The biggest irony would be if this is where it drops in sales, doubtful since its super popular. To me its overrated, the zombie genre has been beaten to death, nothing new has been done, the Walking Dead takes the idea of showing humanity at it lowest and the horrors of just basically trying to survive has been done, Romero beat Kirkman to the punch with Night, Dawn, and Day of the Dead, the others excluded. I find Kirkman to be a bit overrated too, he is becoming a too big for his britches. The higher you climb the further you fall.

@DTor91 And half of those are in my basement. LOL!

Seriously though, I think I own more than 50 copies of that comic, including all the variants. Man, the 90's were so damn good!

Haha right? That comic is so common. Awesome covers though. The Magneto one especially. I have a love and hate relationship with the 90's lol. I miss them though. I am a product of the 90's after all.

[frick]ing Negan makes The Governor look like Barney! First he kills off you know who, then he threatens to rip Blank's eye out and feed it to Blank, Damn! Oh yeah, and people thought TWD was becoming dull...
MJPETTY7
MJPETTY7 - 7/15/2012, 9:20 PM
@musashi @StuckInPanels I know what you mean. Not only have so many great characters passed, but there's not much more survival stuff we really need to go over lol But seriously, #100 was my last TWD issue. Nothing against Kirkman, but he killed to many of my favorite characters in the worst ways. Can't stand around waiting for Rick or Andrea or Carl to die too.

So century meaning 2000's?

I understood from the beginning, but some here don't seem to get that point of the story.

Agree with MJPETTY7, that one stung a bit. Not gonna quit reading though. Probly one of the best scenes I ever read at the end.

It's also probably gonna hit the record for largest percentage drop between months this century, not because of the story, just the fickleness of customers.
"What? You mean I'm supposed to buy the next issue too?"

Dude, X-Men came out last century. See, when the year turned to 2000, a new century began. I know, its a tricky concept to understand.

It hurt alot to read. And the one that died was the main moral compass left for Rick, and seemingly, his only good friend left. I also thought, along with Michone, that with Rick, they three with always be around... so it shocked me. And the way of the death and how it was prolonged... was torture horror.. almost like Saw movies. Not quite my enjoyment factor.

Argh. Won't stop reading. but. shocked and hurt. I know it's because of the length of it all. 100 issues.. You get used to a character being around.

argh
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/16/2012, 7:41 AM
The issue was great, but gratuitous. Shocking is one thing, but this almost seemed to be reveling in the discomfort it was going to bring to readers, and that's something else. I get that it's a horror comic first and foremost, I just think it took one or two panels (anyone who has read it will know what I mean) too far. TBH, I actually felt physically ill.
CrowPirate1
CrowPirate1 - 7/16/2012, 8:06 AM

@RorMachine I agree. I guess it was setting up a great payback/revenge thing later on from Rick and the group. but, just the sheer agony not just from the person's death, but the person's last attempts at words.. and to who the words was to.. and the amount of pain and love those attempts were meaning..

It would have meant even more if the person that had died volunteered. Nobility and sacrifice would have stood, and the death mean something at least. But Kirkman didn't even give the readers that.

I still love the series, but.. it hurt to see and read this issue.

@ROR

I agree, but Kirkman clearly painted a picture of Negan's moral depravity (opposed to that of the Governor's who showed some semblance, albeit twisted).

O my gosh I'm right there with you @Ror, and @Crow.. When I read that it was shocking. I got sick to my stomach, Robert Kirkman is a genius. Definitely not to big for his britches ^^ That issue had me upset for three days lol not mad at Kirkman.. Just the outcome. Anyways I love the walking Dead, can't wait for more! and is it just me or does Kirkman seem like he has a Zach Galifianakis persona going on haha

I'm too old to be a comic book fan, I think--but Avengers just reinvigorated my love of Marvel.

What Kirkman does, that Marvel doesn't, is consistency. He has laid out a logic and set up rules to his world, and he follows through.

The characters and stories are terrific. I have read all of the graphic novels and imo the show is better and has the potential to be far better than the comic books.

I'm not saying that the comic is bad, I just happen to think the show is better. This is why the comic did well, the tremendous fanbase of the show went out and bought the comic.
