Is Josh Trank Really Going To Direct The FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot?

Rumors on Trank's involvement with Fantastic Four were finally confirmed this month and Fox seems to be gearing up for production. But what's the real likelihood of the young, 28 yr old director rebooting Marvel's First Family?

If it’s one thing Hollywood loves, its squeezing everything they can out of fresh new faces. Just think about at all the once-promising young actors and starlets or once hot directors that now couldn’t land a Lifetime movie. Unsurprisingly, Hollywood now has its eyes set on young directing sensation, Josh Trank. After releasing his hit sci-fi flick Chronicle to the tune of $123M at the box-office on a budget of a mere $15M, studios are literally falling over themselves to offer Trank all the comic book projects he can handle. In a span of of roughly 5 months after the February 3rd release date of Chronicle, Trank saw his name attached to the following projects:

- Venom (first reported March 6th) Sony -rumored
- The Red Star (confirmed March 20th) Warner Bros.
- Chronicle Sequel (first reported March 23) 20th Century Fox -rumored
- Shadow of the Colossus (confirmed May 23) Sony
- Fantastic Four (confirmed July 11) 20th Century Fox

It should be noted that script writer Max Landis has been frank in his assessment of Trank’s sudden popularity and concedes that Trank may not return to helm a Chronicle sequel but nothing's confirmed yet. One of the more concrete projects on that list is The Red Star which already has a tentative release date set for 2014. When Deadline announced that Trank had finally accepted directing duties on Fantastic Four, the thing that caught my eye was the statement that the Fantastic Four reboot was going to be fast tracked for production right after X-Men:First Class giving the film a production start date of approximately mid-late 2013. Perhaps this is a sign of some anxiety on Fox’s part. The property might be close, relatively speaking, to reverting back to Marvel Studios like Fox’s other Marvel property, Daredevil. The last Fantastic Four film came in 2007 and the last ‘Daredevil-esque’ film, Elektra, was released in 2005. If Daredevil doesn’t enter production by this Fall, film rights revert back to Marvel. A reasonable assumption would be that Fox brokered a similar deal for Fantastic Four, creating a similar 7-yr allowance between films and giving Fox until 2014 to get a Fantastic Four film into production. Hence, the sudden surge in Fantastic Four news.

An interesting thought to be sure but what I think is worth noting here is that Trank signed on to helm The Red Star for Warner Brothers first and that’s a project which already had someone working on the script. Originally, this was to be Trank’s next project before the Deadline report noted that Fox “expects Fantastic Four to be the next film Trank directs.” Why exactly they expect that was never made clear and while I’m not privy to what’s in Trank’s deal with Warner Bros., I would think a premiere studio like Warner would have enclosures that ensure that Trank adheres to a specific timeline for film production, and with a tentative release date set for 2014, that timeline would make it very hard to shoot a Fantastic Four film for a rival studio. The Red Star would need to have virtually a perfect production, no reshoots, no lengthy casting searches, or any of the other typical delays that normally occur in film production. To date, I’ve seen no reports that say that Red Star has been pushed or scrapped so things simply just don’t add up here.

And let’s not forget that two years ago, Fantastic Four was supposedly ramping up production with active negotiations taking place between several actors and directors. Its still very possible that Trank could direct but until there’s more solid news on this project, I for one, remain skeptical.

I really hope F4 gets delayed off the wazoo so the rights can come back to Marvel.

I hope people are just getting sick of reboots and it falls off the face of the earth and the rights go back to Marvel .

Like I've said, after FOX saw the success with Marvel's The Avengers, you can bet they're going to fast track this. I HOPE they make FF good, but I wish Marvel Studios would handle this :). Oh well...

What Marvel87 said was spot on. A lot of studios (especially studios that still own the movie rights to Marvel IP) are gonna fast track the development of superhero movies now because of the success of The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man. Let's just hope they do it right.

Let me start by saying I hate Fox and what they've done to the Marvel brand over the years. But, in all fairness if they are going to give up the rights to daredevil and FF they probably should receive a buyout from Marvel., as long as it's fair.

Josh Trank sure is a busy man. He could definitely take care of all his "assignments", but I would say: quality would be sacrificed. Fantastic Four probably is his next project. I would hope that he stays artistically dedicated to that project. Otherwise... revert!

I hope what you're saying about Daredevil is correct. I think this film and the FF would be in better hands at Marvel Studios.

Either we get a 2014 FF or we get a Marvel FF - win/win!

Marvel should just step up and offer to buy them back now before they get a project off the ground and get a lot of investment in it. Then we have to wait 7 more years for FF to come around. That alone is worth several million dollars, and since the Avengers money dump truck is still dropping off loads its a good time

We all know Fox is going to remake another shit movie(i personally hate everything they have done) just to turn a buck on the backs of the good SH films like TDKR and Avengers(especially avengers)

F Trank and F FOX. Only way we win is if this reverts to Marvel. I'm still waiting for the awful news that Daredevil starts production right before the rights go back to its rightful home.

They should come to an agreement between Marvel and the other two because it would be faster than waiting for the rights to revert. I'd like to see RDJ's Tony Stark interacting with the FF and Spidey.

If josh trank directs FF I wouldn't mind it being with fox, fox proved they could make a good movie with X:FC so I would like to see FF. daredevil I really don't care about but It, but I don't think he fits marvels formula. Daredevil is a darker character, violent like Nolan's batman so I think he would get better treatment at fox.

Chronicle was a really good movie as far as doing a lot of clever things, and having some great shots.

On the other hand it wasn't fun to watch, it went through some long boring periods. I think he's a very talented director, but hopes he irons out some important pacing issues.

I want FF back at Marvel, if they can't have that movie I really REALLY hope FF would flop in fox's hands so that way they send FF back at home.

I don't care much about how good XM:FC was; I rather see FF & The Avengers fighting together soon !

Anyone who is a true fan of the FF4 should know that the property needs to revert back to Marvel and become part of its cinematic universe. Only then will we see a true cosmic comic book movie.

And no, Chronicle was not a good movie.

The saying that there is sucker born every minute applies to the people who continue to throw away money at the mediocre POV shit that came out after Blair Witch like Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, and Chronicle.

I'm not sure why all the love for X-men: First Class. I thought it was hokey, horrible. The latest in the line of supidly horrible X=Men movies.
I'm a huge fan of the X-Men name, at least before all the comic splits and the over saturization of it...but I can't wait until someone treats the source material correctly and actually does the characters the way they were written and portrayed.
XM: FC wasn't a step forward, it was a shuffle forward. Only slightly better than the crap that came before it. And what really kills me is that all these movies are wasting talent like Jackman, Capt. Piccard, the scottish kid, Fassenbender, Sir Ian, James Marsden. Hell, the guy that played Angel is a better actor than most in those franchies (i mean have you seen him in other movies?? he's phenomenal).
But alas, its idiot fanboys who pay for ANYTHING with an X-Men name on it that wash out the quality of what studios put forth.
Give X-Men the Dark Knight treatment...holy [frick]stick, can you true believers and real thinkers IMAGINE how utterly kick ass that would be?
End of motherfrackin' line.

agreed Ramon. Chronicle was boring, uninspired, predictable. Not a good flick.
Doesn't bother me, I never got into FF; I don't care if this hack director gets his hands on it

Fantastic Four vs the Ultimate Frightful Four.

What if the new Fantastic Four cast fights a zombified version of the old cast? In the Ultimate Frightful Four story arc, Ultimate Richards opens a portal to the Zombified Marvel universe allowing azombified version of Richard, Sur, Johnny & Ben to enter. The nostaliga alone of watching the old cast fight the new cast would be worth it alone.

idk why people keep saying XMen: First Class was a great movie. it was a piece of shit of a film. they once again destroyed the continuity just to turn a buck. marvel needs to buy their properties back. this is getting ridiculous.

Y'know...Marvel actually had a LOT more to do with DD, FF, etc than people seem to think. Basically Avi Arad would meet with a director and say : "This is the script, this is who we have lined up to star, this is the release date- do you want to direct?"

Marvel Studios need to buy the rights to Fantastic Four. Coz they actually know what the fans want. And also that way we can have Dr. Doom as an Avengers baddie.
