THE HOBBIT Was Very Close To Needing A New Gandalf

Sir Ian Mckellen reveals that he very nearly declined to return as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit. Read on to find out what changed his mind.

In our recent trend of actors unabashedly dissing their own films (Paul Bettany & Hugo Weaving) - movies that fans love, we now have a similar yet happier story concerning The Lord of the Rings franchise and Gandalf himself, Sir Ian McKellen.

“It was a little like going back to something that wasn’t necessarily going to be particularly challenging. Gandalf is still inside me, as it were, so the business of getting to know a new character -- I was sort of going to be robbed of that," said McKellen. Combine those sentiments with a lengthy shooting schedule far from his home of England and it's pretty reasonable I think, for the 73-year old actor to have had reservations. However, it was when one of his friends asked him 'What would he say to all the fans when they find out he's not returning' that prompted McKellen to change his mind at the last minute. Another boon for McKellen is the fact that he doesn't have to play the serious Gandalf the White but instead returns to the more affable Gandalf the Grey. “Peter Jackson and I much prefer Gandalf the Grey, who was a man who did manage to enjoy himself," said McKellen. So in a world of 'Bettanys' and 'Weavings' remember that there are a few McKellen's out there doing it for the fans.

How DARE this old git even CONSIDER not returning. And to actually voice an opinion about it when asked? He should just keep his damn moth shut and keep making movies..and when asked a question, he better damn well give an answer that I'M happy with as a fan!!

A great actor, nonetheless. Played Gandalf in all three LotR films wonderfully, so I am glad he decided to return as the wizard in The Hobbit. :)

@TheOneAboveAll - I, too, can't think of any other actor that could replace Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf. This role was meant ONLY for him, and him alone.

Anyway, all joking aside, yeas McKellen is a legend. I would have had serious reservations about even seeing The Hobbit if they had of recast.

MJ, couldn't care less..just interesting that so many of you seem to think actors shouldn't have opinions on anything, especially when you disagree with it. Nothing they said even came across douchey or bitter in any way either. Actually quite baffling.

I thought Weaving only had a problem with films that lacked substance and were poorly made popcorn spectacles, such as the Transformers films and Captain America - The First Avenger. I didn't realise he disliked LOTR as well.

"I [signed a multi-picture deal] for Captain America. I think the tendency, with those films, would be to probably not bring a villain back. They might for The Avengers, but I didn’t think I’d be in Captain America 2 or 3. I don’t think Red Skull will be there. And it’s not something I would want to do again. I’m glad I did it. I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to. I think I’ve done my dash with that sort of film. It was good to do it and try it out, but to be honest, it’s not the sort of film I seek out and really am excited by. As an actor, to do all sorts of different films is great. It stretches you in different ways. But, I increasingly like to go back to what I used to always do, which is to get involved with projects that I really have a personal affiliation with."

How in any way, shape, or form is he dissing the movie with what he said there?

McKellan was the perfect Gandalf; I thought he was a bit old to be Magneto, but he had the character down, so no problems there either. I would not have been bothered if the role of Gandalf had to be recast for the Hobbit though. He's much older now, and it may show in a movie that is supposed to have taken place many years prior to TLOTR. But clearly he doesn't have an agent with a PR department dedicated to offering excuses, reasons, and general BS for it's clients. "What will you say to the fans...?" doesn't cross many (ANY?) actors minds these days.
