POLL: Who Should Direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

POLL: Who Should Direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

Immediately after news dropped about Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm and confirmation of a new Star Wars sequel set to drop in 2015, twitter positively exploded with reactions. But with a sequel just over two years away, who should direct?

Feature Opinion

Something seems a bit fishy about the announcement of a 2015 film release for a Star Wars sequel. Traditionally, (at least with the prequels) the Star Wars films required a lengthy amount of time in post production to nail down all the special effects. And with Disney and LucasFilm able to keep even an inkling of this mega-deal from slipping out, it almost makes you wonder if they're still keeping a few things underwraps. Like maybe, there's already a script/director/actor(s) attached to the project. And with such a historic movie franchise, its hard to believe that Disney will turn to any unproven talent as they look to re-spark one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. For now though, we're free to speculate. Below, I've listed a few options for the director's chair:

-Christopher Nolan: A long shot surely, but he's a fan of the franchise.
-Guillermo del Toro: I'm sure he'd love to design the creatures in the Star Wars universe.
-Edgar Wright: He'll likely be busy with Ant-Man but he's one director that could capture the humor from the original films.
-JJ Abrams: Abrams is a huge Star Wars fan but he's locked into the Star Trek films.
-Rian Johnson: A confessed fan of Cowboy Beebop, you definitely see a bit of that sci-fi aesthetic in Looper.
-Brad Bird: He's in the inner circle at Disney and proved himself with Ghost Protocol.
-Ridley Scott: Say what you will about Prometheus, no one does sci-fi like Scott.
-Kevin Smith: A darkhorse option surely but he would definitely bring fresh vision to a franchise that's become a bit stale.
-Peter Jackson - Another Warner Bros. collaborator, he's proven himself with one storied franchise already.
-Josh Trank: The new kid on the block, he may need to prove himself a bit more before being handed the keys to something like Star Wars.
-John Favreau: He launched the Marvel Universe with Iron Man, can he do something similar for Star Wars?
-Drew Goddard - With Joss Whedon busy guiding the Marvel Cinematic Universe and directing The Avengers 2 which will also be released in 2015, Goddard would be the next logical choice if you're looking to take a Whedonesque approach.
-Duncan Jones: As someone just pointed out to me on twitter, I criminally forgot to add Jones to the mix. Moon and Source Code are two very excellent sci-fi films. Most CBMers wanted Jones for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guillermo del Toro would definitely be an interesting choice and I think is the best option visually. Rian Johnson is also a good choice and would be another one that would be best fit. If I had to chose, it would be one of them.

peter jackson would be my choice but he may be to busy with the hobbit to worry about star wars.

guilermo del toro would be another great choice from the visual side of things.

whatabout ruppert wyatt of rise of the planet of the apes fame.

did rian johnson do looper, that could be an intresting choice.

whomever takes it on will probably be shitting their pants that it doesn't turn out like the prequels.

Tough one. I rarely thought of a director for a new Star Wars movie, because it's just hard for me to see these familiar names helming it, and...well, by then, a new Star Wars movie was not likely to happen. But again, I don't see these familiar names taking the project, although my vote goes for Rian Johnson.

Oh yeah, Duncan Jones should be my other top pick.

Seriously, I visited a couple of websites and most people who heard about this news wants Joss Whedon to direct the next movie.

Anybody but nolan (!!!); really don't need him mundanising STAR WARS, making Wookies into a race of people with hirsituism, etc.

How is Joss going to have Avengers 2 and Star Wars coming out in 2015? Neither project has started yet, it's impossible.

My vote goes to either Duncan Jones or Rian Johnson. Both are brilliant directors.

BTW, Rian Johnson would make a good director for a live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop.

Can't believe there are people who voted for NOLAN. Nolan is too realistic, you people who voted Nolan want star wars grounded on reality? For f*ck sake.
Abrams and Favreau are the best choices. Oh and keep ridley scott far away from any old franchise, look what he did with the franchise he started.

Nolan? HAIIILL nahh. Just not for this job at all.

I would actually like to see whedon but he is busy with Avengers. So I would like to see peter jackson.

We need someone who isn't afraid to embrace the universe and is willing to take risk so that they do something new with it.

People are saying Joss for Avengers 2, but realistically given the chance, I have a hard time seeing him turning down star wars.

Though I doubt a "big name" director is needed to direct star wars, just look at Irvin Kershner. Can anyone name a film he's directed other than Empire.

How stupid do you have to be to believe that Nolan will make this realistic or bad? I mean, Jesus, you'd have to quite the absolute moron.

My picks are Nolan and Bird.

Nolan, Bird and del Toro would all make quality films but I doubt they'd be willing to take on such a legacy.

Whedon would be fab, it's a shame he'll be obviously unavailable.

This poll is as unoriginal as the movie choices in Hollywood.

Try someone new that is up and coming? I don't want everyones director of the week.

Bring some originality back to Star Wars. The safe choice in film is never the correct choice.

You guys want Nolan to direct everything, don't you?
