Steven Spielberg Praises SKYFALL, Wanted To Direct James Bond

Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg talks about being turned down for James Bond and what he thinks of Sam Mendes' Skyfall. Would you like to see the director of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jaws direct a James Bond film?

We can put James Bond next to Star Wars on the list of film franchises that Spielberg wanted to direct but was unable to work out the details. While promoting Lincoln, the director was asked about the latest James Bond outing currently dominating the domestic and international box office.

"I went to Cubby Broccoli and I asked if I could do [a James Bond film] and he said, 'No'. "I've never asked again. Instead, I made the Indiana Jones series." And what does he think of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig? "I've seen it once and I'll see it a second time."

Pretty hefty praise, all things considered. Do you think Spielberg's directorial style would mesh well with the intrigue and misdirection of James Bond? It all worked out though I suppose, if Broccoli had said yes, we might not have any Indiana Jones films.

Id be down with that. Although I suspect they'd prefer a big British or European director.

Well the Bond producers disagree with you. Nolan would probably get the gig before Spielberg.

So if he said yes to Spielberg, he would have made the first Timothy dalton bond movie?? Can't think of the name of that one

Spielberg need to direct STAR WARS:

Star Wars

In Claire's defence, and I openly hate Nolanites, Nolan made BATMAN into Bond, so imagine what he could do if he actually was using Bond instead of BATMAN. Now, while Nolan is a great director, he needs to stay away from Hack writers like Goyer; Goyer contaminates everything he touches in a bad way.

Of course he'd have to line up behind Nolan because these scumbag brits don't want any American to play Bond or direct it.

The only American director was the one behing Never Say Never because that film was produced outside the normal continuity and producers of the Bond film.

[frick] BOND

And as a matter of fact only one director outside of the brit commonwealth has ever directed a Bond film. Talk about a bunch of open minded cock sucking wankers

I like stories like these, obviously most 007 film's are successful, Spiels coulda probably made a great 007, but I want him to do one now, not in the 80's.

Ummm......how would Nolan [frick] it up if Skyfall was heavily inspired by his directorial style and movie TDK?

I think Goyer is a great writer

Steven Spielberg is a great film director. I think he would have done a great job directing a Bond film.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sam Mendes getting another crack at at least another film. But if I had to choose a big-name director to direct the next James Bond, it'd be Chris Nolan.

a Nolan Bond would be VERY interesting

and if he reuses his actors again, that means we might see Bale as a Bond villain. That would be GREAT!

@Preston

Whoa, whoa, hold up... Goyer a "HACK writer"? He wrote the entirety of Batman Begins, which many call the closest adaptation to the comics (at least in that trilogy). He's also wrote Man Of Steel, and judging by the Jor-El's and Pa Kent's dialogue in the teaser trailer, I'd say: he did a great job. Warner Brothers likes him enough to get him involved with Godzilla. And lastly: he wrote Blade. Besides Trinity (which he directed) people have good things to say about the trilogy. David Goyer may be a HACK director, but I wouldn't call him a "HACK writer".

Christopher Nolan and Syncopy wouldn't leave Warner Brothers, would they? He'd do a good job with 007 but I'm not waiting on it. Keep Sam Mendes around, Skyfall sets the franchise on a better footing than Casino Royale... makes me want to watch all of the 007 films I missed (I caught most of the references).

Nolan and Spielberg would both do a fine job. Stop hating Nolan because you didnt particularly love TDKR, if youve seen his other films you know hes a masterful storyteller so quit bitcing.
And Spielberg has proven himself to be one of the most important filmakers of any era so I say both would be good options.

@SuspenseSmith You are absolutely right! For some reason the fans have turned on Nolan like he made the worst film ever, but he didnt! They were just dissapointed that it wasnt "perfect" but thats such a waste of time. Nolan is still a great director/writer as a whole.
And Spielberg still has it!

@ 95: Goyer's enjoyed more success in recent years, but we should note that while he had creative input on the storylines, he was not in fact the major screenwriter for either TDK or TDKR. We should also note that apart from the batman movies and Dark City, he has never been associated with a film that got a fresh rating from rottentomatoes. His other notable contributions to popular culture include the second Ghost Rider film, Blade Trinity, and Jumper.

Finally, shouldn't everyone be aware by now that most of the complaints raised about Nolan's batman films have nothing to do with the direction or acting, but instead with plot holes, clumsy exposition, and narrative tone (in a word, writing)?

So...yeah. I really hope Man of Steel is good too. Hard to tell on the basis of a couple clips, but I hope so...I am a little concerned, though, that Snyder may have to succeed in spite of Goyer...

People here don't even hate Nolan for anything he did

They hate him for the sheer fact of making CBM movies not like marvels. Sad

Alphaman06 is a pansy. Direct anything close to what Nolan has achieved and then have something to say.

Just mention the name Nolan here and it becomes a war. People here are sad and pathetic.

Spielberg has made some of the greatest films ever, not just for box office figures, but for film culture. However, having sat through Indie 4 I wouldn't let him direct the next Muppet movie. He needs to get back to the muse that inspired him and leave CGI at the door. I know he will return to top form again. No director has a 100% batting average.
